Ubuntu :: New Install, Keyboard Doesn't Work
Mar 17, 2010Windows crapped out on me (not surprisingly) and I am using Ubuntu to transfer all of my files to an external hard drive. However, when the computer loads the Ubuntu disk I get to a language selection menu, but my keyboard doesn't work. It won't let me make any sort of selection, and the 30 second timer eventually times out and my system just restarts and the process starts all over again.
I've tried plugging my keyboard in to all of the different USB ports on my computer, but still nothing. The strange thing is that the keyboard works just fine when I changed the BIOS settings to boot from the cd-rom... it just doesn't work when Ubuntu is ready to run..

Keyboard works fine at power on. I can edit BIOS options. I put in the CD or DVD, it starts fine. Keyboard works for selecting boot options. Once the installation begins however, no more keyboard...
This is true across every version and distribution of Linux I have come across- I have dozens of liveCDs -EXCEPT Linux Mint 8.
Laptop = Acer 5517
Running Linux Mint 8 & Windows 7
I have no USB Legacy Emulation BIOS option

Mar 16, 2011After a reboot earlier today, my Ubuntu 10.10 box (which I set up earlier today) has started rebooting to tty1. But I can't type a username - nothing appears, although the system does respond to control-alt-delete, and reboots. I don't see anything obviously wrong in the setup when I boot using the live CD and mount my disk.

Jul 5, 2011I just installed Debian Testing (with Xfce) along side Win7 on my Dell XPS M1530 and now neither my keyboard nor my USB-mouse work at the login screen. Both worked perfectly during the installation and Grub as well recognizes my keyboard. The Numlock-LED can be switched on and off during the boot, but fails to work at the login screen.

Did a desktop setup and afterwards installed Eclipse, and I was happy: A new system for coding on-the-go! Now, after upgrading to Lucid with do-release-upgrade -d, I can no longer enter my password on X login. The keyboard just doesn't work for some reason. When I enable the onscreen keyboard, and click my password, I can login. The strange thing is that my keyboard works like a charm after I've logged into my X session?

Jul 18, 2010I'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.
Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.
I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).

Jan 28, 2010The title says it all. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my PS3, but the keyboard isn't typing. I can't complete the install, because I can't type anything. I've followed all the steps properly, everything goes smoothly, the mouse works just fine, and the capslock and numlock lights light up on the keyboard, and toggle when I press the corresponding buttons. The keyboard even works at the kboot prompt. After I choose the partition to use, I have to enter my information to continue. Without being able to type, I can't progress. The keyboard obviously works, since I can type just fine at the kboot prompt.This one's got me scratching my head. I'm going to try a 9.04 cd tomorrow, see if that works, but I was really hoping to get 9.10 on there.

May 29, 2011After I finished upgrading Xubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04, I discovered that my keyboard stopped working in X Server. The upgrade process was running smoothly until the last moment, when it produced some error, which I, unfortunately, did not write down. Anyway, the upgrade has completed; uname shows kernel version 2.6.32-31. Now the keyboard works fine if I select a recovery mode at startup, but if I type 'start gdm' from the shell or select the default option in GRUB while booting, the keyboard becomes unavailable right from the login screen. I can log on using the virtual keyboard, but that's all I can do; the keyboard is still dead.

When i booted in safe mode from grub i can log in but only if i enter my root password. And then do /etc/init.d/gdm start.
If i tray to continue straight to gdm in safe mode my keyboard is not working so i can`t log in.

Causing me to do a restart. when starting my pc, i get the ubuntu splash screen and then it jumps to a black screen with: "desktop login" after i out in my log in it asks for the password, i put that in and get "Weclome to Ubuntu etc" (forgot all the words, but its some statement welcoming me to ubuntu. The i get "tim@tim-desktop: $" but this is all on a black screen. Only way to get past this is to reboot my pc. and then it loads properly.

Jun 19, 2015I'm running Debian 8.1 KDE on a 2007 dv6 laptop. Model number is worn off. lol but the specs:
Intel i3 first gen m 330
4GB RAM
Intel (ironlake) graphics
First off, closing the lid to my laptop doesn't trigger suspend, or anything no matter what I set it to in power options.
I can suspend using "systemctl" or suspend from the "Leave" menu, but upon turning my computer back on, my touchpad and keyboard don't work.
Sometimes, my touchpad will start working after about 15 seconds, but the keyboard doesn't come back. I have to hard reset.
I have a feeling it's something to do with systemd, but I'm not super proficient in linux. Just an end user who is friendly with a terminal.

Apr 8, 2010Got myself in a bit of a squeeze here. I was messing around with the Xorg install on my Fedora 12 system. I ended up reinstalling it. Now my mouse and keyboard work fine in single user mode / terminal. But if I try and boot to X they dont work at the login screen. HAL and udev are booting. Ive done a udevadm monitor test in single user mode and its seeing the devices connect and disconnect. Ive also tried both USB and PS2 devices. Same issue. Ive tried playing with xorg.conf and generating it with Xorg -configure :1 I dont know to use to fix it. After banging my head against the wall for 20+ hours I decided it was time to ask for help. m just Lynxing around the web at the moment =X
