After a reboot earlier today, my Ubuntu 10.10 box (which I set up earlier today) has started rebooting to tty1. But I can't type a username - nothing appears, although the system does respond to control-alt-delete, and reboots. I don't see anything obviously wrong in the setup when I boot using the live CD and mount my disk.
View 1 RepliesI installed karmic on a dell vostro 1000 - all went well until I installed updates and restarted. Ubuntu booted to tty1 instead of tty7. I'm not entirely sure what changed, but I could do one of 2 things. at the login prompt on tty1 I could wait about 2+ minutes and it would boot to tty7 w/o my network card (but keeping the wireless) or I could ctrl+alt+f7 and get to the normal tty7 with everything working.After a bit of looking around, i found a few solutions, but the problems were not exactly like mine.- I could reinstall gdm (I did this and it had no effect)- I could install minigetty and do something else (not to sure what they wanted here)- I could remove usplashIt turned out that removing usplash did the trick...I dont get the cool little white logo over a black screen

Keyboard works fine at power on. I can edit BIOS options. I put in the CD or DVD, it starts fine. Keyboard works for selecting boot options. Once the installation begins however, no more keyboard...

I bought an imac G3 yesterday and it has xubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake installed on it. When i turn it on, after it POSTs, a little xubuntu logo appears it it begins to load 'essential drivers' and mount the file system, etc. After it is done doing that, it simply prompts me into a CLI that on the top says "Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS ubuntu tty1". It asks for my username and password, and then it just keeps me in this tty1 terminal. I did some research online and supposedly by pressing alt+F7 you can exit the tty terminals and go back into GUI mode. Well pressing alt+F7 does nothing, and pressing alt+F1 through 6 just sends me into the different tty terminals.
I am very new to Linux so if someone could give me an idiot proof explanation on either how to fix it or whether im screwed and just need to reinstall xubuntu on here.
I recently tried to upgrade my Dell Latitude C610 from 10.10 to 11.04, but it got kernel panic right in the middle. Now it at least boots, but the mouse doesn't work--only the keyboard does. How do I fix this enough to use the mouse, or how do I operate Gnome with a keyboard?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Debian Testing (with Xfce) along side Win7 on my Dell XPS M1530 and now neither my keyboard nor my USB-mouse work at the login screen. Both worked perfectly during the installation and Grub as well recognizes my keyboard. The Numlock-LED can be switched on and off during the boot, but fails to work at the login screen.

Did a desktop setup and afterwards installed Eclipse, and I was happy: A new system for coding on-the-go! Now, after upgrading to Lucid with do-release-upgrade -d, I can no longer enter my password on X login. The keyboard just doesn't work for some reason. When I enable the onscreen keyboard, and click my password, I can login. The strange thing is that my keyboard works like a charm after I've logged into my X session?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.
Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.
I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).
I downloaded the Fedora 11 KDE livecd, installed it, and after the reboot when I get to that "firstboot" screen, I can't move the mouse, the keyboard doesn't work, I have to hold down the power button to turn off the computer.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu with the netboot. I only installed the packages I needed. Concerning X, I installed xdm as login manager and fluxbox as window manager. All is working fine except that whatever I type under X (under xdm or, after logging in, under fluxbox) appears in tty1! The keyboard inputs appear under X and under tty1 (so usually after "login:", or hidden after "password:").
Let me provide you with more details. Starting from xdm, I cannot access to the other ttys. "ctrl+alt+F[1-6]" do not work. Actually, this is not entirely true: after I type "ctrl+alt+F2", all my keyboard inputs under X will be appear in tty2 (and not anymore in tty1). I can see that from /var/log/auth.log which has a lot of lines like this:

These errors are due to the fact that tty1 receives a wrong login (something I typed under X, before pressing RET). BTW: If I connect to xdm using my password (instead of my passphrase, thanks to pam_ssh), then I login into tty1 at the same time.
I checked that X is running under tty7. "ck-list-sessions" returns:

Under X, if I type "ctrl+alt+F7" and "RET", then X crashes and it is launched again. After this, all is working fine: the tty[1-6] can be accessed and the keyboard inputs do not go anymore to them when I am under X.
I face the same problem on two different computers (a desktop computer and a laptop). Notice that I face the problem even with pam_ssh not installed (I mentioned pam_ssh earlier).
I have quite a bit of skill in Windows, but I like Ubuntu. Only problem is, it doesn't boot up now! It boots into tty1 or something like that.I used Plymouth Manager available from [URL], and must have messed something up.
View 1 Replies View Relatedlike any other Linux newb, I came to Ubuntu because my Windows crashed one time too many. And I chose Ubuntu because "it just works". But these past few days that hasn't been true. I'm posting this from a netbook with Ubuntu, and am having no problems whatsoever, but normally I use an Acer Aspire 5920G laptop. I'll include the specs as written on the sticker:
* Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5250 (1.5GHz etc)
* Up to 1024 MB Nvidia Geforce 8600M GS Turbocache
* 2 GB DDR2
Let me know if you need more details, and I'll add them later. Now, what happened was I clicked "hibernate" while leaving Firefox open. (I've done this hundreds of times, no problem) And when I went to turn it back on the next day there were weird graphical glitches in the loading screen, and it booted to the "tty1" prompt screen. I did a lot of googling and found quite a few posts about it, but the solutions either didn't work, or I didn't understand them. After trying several different suggestions from this forum and others, I managed to delete the graphics drivers. That enabled me to boot in low graphics mode, and naturally, I tried a whole bunch of things to make it work properly again. That only made it worse. Now it went straight from the loading screen to just blanking out and turning the display off. So, I tried new things. Over and over. The weird thing is even when I disconnected my harddrive and ran from a Live USB, the problem persisted. Could there be an issue with the graphics card itself? Anyway, after reconnecting the harddrive I tried to boot again. And it suddenly worked. Even HDMI to my bigger screen worked.

The problem i have is that after sucessfully installing Ubuntu 10.04 (64bits) when i start my PC and i get to grub2 and select Ubuntu it will get stuck at a blank screen with only an "_" flickering on the top of the screen. At first i thought "Hey, maybe it just takes a while to boot" but after letting it sit there for about 20 minutes and nothing happening i decided to restart my PC. And then the same thing happened like 5 times. BUT on the 6th try it booted sucessfully! And everything was working perfectly but as soon as i restarted my PC i would encounter the same problem.
Details I should probably mention that i had the exact same problen on the install process. I tried with a CD i had burned the image on and it would show me install options (Try and install, install, etc.) But when i selected either one of those i would get the "_" flickering and nothing ever happening. Then i tried it with a DVD thinking that the CD was the issue. Same thing. After that i tried with a USB drive and i would get the same exact problem, but on the retry on the USB drive the planets aligned in such a way that i actually got the Virtual Ubuntu loaded from my USB drive.
So it installed sucessfully and when i restarted it i got to GRUB and selected Linux and the "_" would start showing and nothing ever happens. On the <random number> of restarts it actually launched and it picked up my audio, video cards, other NTFS drives, etc. But when i restarted i would get the problem again. I even went trough the whole install process AGAIN (getting it to read from the USB flash drive, starting on Ubuntu) and still no consistent results. Though on the second install it didn't pick up my audio hardware nor my other NTFS drives until the second restart where i was able to use Ubuntu normally. I even upgraded what it told me to upgrade. (now i have two "different" versions of ubuntu on grub, each with it's own safe mode only different by a .24 and a .25 on their names) and right after upgrading and restarting it booted immediately. But after that i'm getting the same issue over and over again.

Windows crapped out on me (not surprisingly) and I am using Ubuntu to transfer all of my files to an external hard drive. However, when the computer loads the Ubuntu disk I get to a language selection menu, but my keyboard doesn't work. It won't let me make any sort of selection, and the 30 second timer eventually times out and my system just restarts and the process starts all over again.
I've tried plugging my keyboard in to all of the different USB ports on my computer, but still nothing. The strange thing is that the keyboard works just fine when I changed the BIOS settings to boot from the cd-rom... it just doesn't work when Ubuntu is ready to run..
I created a bunch of keyboard shortcuts via "System > Preferences Keyboard Shortcuts," and they all work flawlessly except one: Nautilus. I just set it to run the command "nautilus" and it doesn't do anything. My GNOME panel launcher runs the same command just fine.

When I start ubuntu I can't use my mouse and keyboard. It works in a second when the log in screen appears but then it freeze. It works in bios, grub and safe mode. I use mx518 and ace kl 400.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter I finished upgrading Xubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04, I discovered that my keyboard stopped working in X Server. The upgrade process was running smoothly until the last moment, when it produced some error, which I, unfortunately, did not write down. Anyway, the upgrade has completed; uname shows kernel version 2.6.32-31. Now the keyboard works fine if I select a recovery mode at startup, but if I type 'start gdm' from the shell or select the default option in GRUB while booting, the keyboard becomes unavailable right from the login screen. I can log on using the virtual keyboard, but that's all I can do; the keyboard is still dead.
View 5 Replies View Relatedgot myself a new pc, windows 7 installed.. i just got done installing ubuntu10.10. it said to finnish, i had to reboot.. ok, no problem.. i reboot, loading says uuid is not valid.. but, it loads 7 fine.. they are on the same drive, but different partitions. i only got a wireless usb keyboard and when it goes to the shell, it doesnt seen to recognize it.

When i booted in safe mode from grub i can log in but only if i enter my root password. And then do /etc/init.d/gdm start.
If i tray to continue straight to gdm in safe mode my keyboard is not working so i can`t log in.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter booting up my pc, sometimes it loads, and then my mouse freezes and i am unable to do anything at all. keyboard doesnt work either. Causing me to do a restart. when starting my pc, i get the ubuntu splash screen and then it jumps to a black screen with: "desktop login" after i out in my log in it asks for the password, i put that in and get "Weclome to Ubuntu etc" (forgot all the words, but its some statement welcoming me to ubuntu. The i get "tim@tim-desktop: $" but this is all on a black screen. Only way to get past this is to reboot my pc. and then it loads properly.
