i specifically told ubuntu to install alongside my operation system (windows) and instead it installed over windows and deleted all the other partitions... i had 200gb of data that i completely lost is there anyway to recover this data?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have accidentally ended up in deleting my root directory while I blindly fired command while watching movie.
I fired following command
#rm -rf ~/<SPACE>*.out
instead of this command
#rm -rf ~/*.out
Things already done:
1) Created /root directory relogged to get some of basic settings of gnome and Desktop.
2) Things went well now when I login my desktop ,gnome environment and other things looks to be working well only prompt on my terminal has changed. I can fix it any ways.
Things I want to ask:
1) I haven't studied much about contents of /root directory to best of my knowledge is it like other user's home directory with some basic configuration files for mostly required applications. SO my question is have I lost any thing important system file or something?
2) If I have lost any important configuration or system data how can I recover it without reinstalling whole system? (My opinion about this is, It is quite possible but to do so, as far as I know capabilities of linux. But I still want comments from experts before I try any things on it because I don't want to backup my whole HDD and reinstall the whole stuff again for me and also my sister's stuff in MS.)
I inadvertently started creating a boot disk over an entire 300GB external hard drive. Needless to say, I had all sorts of data saved on there. I stopped it early on in the process by turning off the drive, but I now I don't know how to salvage what's left.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just downloaded, burned, and tried the ISO image. only to find out it's not a bootable, live CD, but rather a Windows program, ie. it requires booting into Windows and running it from the CD, which is not a good idea since the first thing to do in this case is to quit the OS to prevent it from using those newly available sectors to write new data. can a Linux-based live CD try and recover files recently deleted in an NTFS partition?

It looks like they have deleted the partition with SuSE with the Grub Loader.
I cannot load up SuSE or Windows 7!

I have tried using the Windows 7 install disc to repair - but it does not recognise that Windows is installed and wants to do a clean install only.

the problem is i deleted some hidden folders(in ubuntu which are not hidden, such as recyclebin and file information table folders) in ntfs partitions, now i need to reinstall the windows 7 back, i have a doubt that even windows will ever recognize those partitions again?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a full Ubuntu 9.10x64 install on an external hard drive and I was recently asked by a friend who has a laptop running 32 bit vista if I might be able to help him in recovering anything from pictures to Quick Books files. He believes the hard drive is corrupted. His laptop is an HP with less than 2 gigs of ram, and he is not sure about the motherboard/chipset. It may or may not support x64. He went out and bought an iMac the other day so he wouldn't need to deal with not having a working computer.
Now I have 2 questions. The first being, I am wondering if my x64 install will still be able to run if I tried booting to it from his computer in the event that the chipset that does not support 64 bit architecture, or do I need to revert to a 32 bit install? My instinct/what I perceive to be the obvious answer, is that yes, my x64 install should/will be able to boot via the bios. My second question is: how do I go about loading Ubuntu once the external is plugged into the iMac?
I bought a new dell studio 1555 from best buy about a year and a half ago. Got the warranty because I have 4 kids and something is bound to be dropped, spilled or smashed at some point. True to my visions, something did get dropped smashed and spilled, and pennies got stuck in the dvd slot. So I took it in when the screen stopped coming on because of a loose connection in the hinge and they did apparently fix that problem, but also were benevolent enough to wipe out my entire hard drive, operating sytem and all, totally free of charge. I guess they figured since I like accidents so much, I would just LOVE having 18 months of data and programs disappear into thin air. I know all about how I should have backed it up, and I am not whining too much over this. I will roll with the punches. But there are just a FEW things on that hard drive I will really miss. Like a few crucial spreadsheets that I was not able to save to my external drive before the screen went south. Now that windows 7, I am not planning on missing at all. In fact I am loving running my new Ubuntu 11.04 from my usb and knowing that those idiots will not be able to screw this one up next time. But I would really like to be able to recover those files if I can. Is there any way to get those back? And I also cannot figure out how to find device manager. Do I have to install to hard drive to use that? I know these are all probably total newbie questions. But hey, i got here as soon as I could. Everybody has got to start somewhere.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI bought an IcyBox NAS a little while back, and it recently died on me. I have physical access to the disks inside (1.5TB RAID 1 array), and the box was running a version of Linux. I now have the difficulty of retrieving the data from the disks. As best I can tell, the NAS uses software RAID. All I have available are 2 Windows machines, one of which has sufficient free space to hold the data from the NAS. I've booted one of the Windows machines into Linux using a Ubuntu CD, and Ubuntu can see the array drive(s), but cannot mount them.
What would be the quickest and easiest way to retrieve the data from the disks? What data can I collect from Ubuntu (10.10) that will help me pin down why it can't mount the array volume?
I cannot boot into by Ubuntu 9.1 machine.... Trying either GUI or rescue mode gives me the following error messages (which i copied by hand since they were in cli)

I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. View 9 Replies View RelatedI had a working Ubuntu 9.10 with Windows 7 installed, and i was writing an image of IPCOP [URL] to the USB drive incorrectly, i did mkfs on my primary partation i.e. /dev/sda1 now i am trapped in situation, i was trying to write and usb-hdd image of ipcop on USB Drive, while doing so, i have given following commands
1. mkfs.vfat /dev/sda1
2. e2label usb-pen
3. zcat filename > /dev/sda1
* now the stupid thing i have done, is given /sda1( My HDD ) instead of /sdb1 (USB Drive), it has successfully loaded IPCOP bootable on my primary drive, and my laptop is not working now.

I decided to install Linux Mint.Sadly, in all my noobishness, I forgot about the 4 primary partition limit (oops!) and as I have /, /home, swap, and /boot partitions (all primary) already installed, I have run into a bit of a problem.I resized my /home partition (almost 500GB) to about 225, and was then told I have over 200GB unusable space. Is it possible for me to change at least 1 of my primary partitions to logical partitions AND keep all the data intact (AND edit the arch configuration so that it'll still work) so I can install a second linux? I sincerely doubt it
