I tried to install ubuntu 10.10 Lynx through livecd , but the partitions in my 160gb western digital hard disk is shown as unallocated free space . Through the linux terminal when I fire the command sudo fdisk -l it does not display anything. In my current HD I have installed windows XP successfully.

I am running an Atheros AR928x Wireless network card (windows reports it as a AR5b93). Also as a side note, whenever i turn on my computer, my wireless is disabled. I know that wireless interfaces are listed in /proc/net/dev, but I don't know how to identify a cellular NIC.Is there any virtual file in /proc that shows the cellular NICs in the system? When I boot the live cd (Puppy), I go to configure the internet connection, and shows the module for the card has automatically loaded, and I just set it to DHCP and that is all. After installing the os, however, I go to configure the connection, and it tells me that no module has been loaded, so I should manually choose from the list. When I do, it tells me that it failed to load. I have also tried allowing it to probe by loading every possible driver, to no avail. I have reinstalled the os twice, and it does not recognize the adapter, but when I boot live, it works fine. Any reason why it would do this?

Two Karmic installs (I find I tend to hork one every once in a while by playing too much, so having a backup around is nice), windows 7, and Snow Leopard. I got everything up and running, except I had Leopard installed instead of snow leopard. At that time, I had the following:
sda1->win 7
sda2->leopard
sda5->karmic 1
sda6->karmic 2
(others for swap / extended / etc)
Grub2 detected everything just fine, made a real nice grub.cfg file and away I went.Now, I've made a change. Snow Leopard required GUID partitions and I had my stuff all set up as MBR and was /not/ about to reformat and start over. So I added a second drive, sdb.
Now, I can boot to that drive independently. Fine.I can boot to sda just fine and go to either Ubuntu install or windows just fine. Great. Grub2 finds Mac OSX on /dev/sdb2. Awesome (sdb1 is a fat32 bootloader for hackintosh reasons). It not only doesn't update grub.cfg, it leaves the old /dev/sda2 listing for my old Leopard install ... whose partition I deleted. It isn't visible anymore.

But nothing after Ubuntu 9.10 on /dev/sda6 shows up in grub.cfg? I'm at a loss. Any ideas how to get it to populate? I'd rather not hack grub.cfg and have to rebuild it by hand every once in a while especially as grub was fine with finding it.
Sadly, I google'd the heck out of this and even the vmware community has no answers. So, I decided to turn to the experts and see if you can provide a better solution than [URL]. The system sees both CPU's and all of the cores (cat /proc/cpuinfo). I have tried with HT and without HT (I never run HT anymore; seems to hurt performance in my workloads). I've tried the recent and newest kernels for CentOS 5.4 and still have no luck. There seems to be lots of people having this issue, but no real solutions.

After updating them both, I enabled the RPMFusion repos and installed the akmod-ed wireless driver on each (following these instructions: [URL] Wireless works perfectly on one laptop, but doesn't seem to be working on the other. The wl module is activated (shows up in lsmod) and the wireless card is enabled (wlan0 shows up in ifconfig), but Network Manager isn't showing any available networks. For the record, wireless works on both laptops with Ubuntu 9.10 I am going to try cloning the entire drive on the working laptop and sticking it on the dud one.

FC14 appears to falsely detect some hardware as a Thermal diode and causes random shut down due to thermal over temperature condition. I am in the process of building a new MythTV back end and choose the EliteGroup motherboard A790GXM-AD3. I did a fresh FC14 install usewd the update depositary during the install. On the first boot the system shut down before I could get the password entered. Eventually I noticed the following in the /var/log/dmesg file. May 6 09:20:52 pvr1 kernel: [ 71.081080] Critical temperature reached (127 C), shutting down. I installed the lm_sensors RPM and I see the following:

I did log a call with the ECS mother board support to get their view on this issue. But based on the BIOS PC Health display temp3 should not exist. So perhaps the kernel is detecting some other hardware as a thermal diode? Random shut downs due to ghost hardware is not good. The kernel version is 2.6.35.12-90.fc14.x86_64
I tried to boot a FC15 beta live CD but it shut down due to the over temp condition before it completed booting. A google search of the error message got two hits one in FC12 and the other in Ubunuto linux both with ECS motherboards.
Basically system monitor and the "top" command show 2 cpu cores when I only have 1 (a 3 Ghz P4 on my work computer).
I'm not sure if the two are related but I frequently get 100% CPU usage when running a few programs together (Kile, Firefox, Chrome and okular for example) at which point even the movement of the mouse cursor slows down.

I do not have any shares setup on my home network so this has never been a big deal to me. My mother finally took enough interest in my operating system to allow me to dual boot 3 of her computers. Everything was up and running like a charm and then she asked "What about connecting to the file server?"
I click on "network" under nautilus and start clicking around - no where in here is the file server that every Windows system on the network can see (5 or so other systems with xp/vista/7 on them - so I know the share works). A small bit of time and some command life foo later I had hunted down and manually mounted the share and added and fstab entry for the drive so my mother would never have to go through that on her own.
That being said - did I do things the hardway here? Can someone please tell me there is an easy method that successfully detects and connects to samba shares without having to resort to CLI? Personally I do not mind doing this, but it is an issue when I am installing Linux for a beginner.

ok so the router works in windows and i know the config details of it.i can see other wifi access points in the area but not my one. i have tried joining it as a "hidden network" to no avail.is there any reason why fedora would not detect my own wifi when it detects substantially weaker signals instead??

I'm trying to install Kubuntu 9.10 on my machine (I had the same problem with Kubuntu 9.04). The machine is:
- Core 2 Quad 6600
- Nvidia 7600 GS
- Two disk seagate 500 in mirroring raid software
When I try to install Kubuntu, after disk partition, my system dosn't see the CD. He tell me to insert disk into drive but I doesn't touch it. I resolved this mounting an external hard disk into /cdrom. After this, the installation continues until the step "select and install software".
