Basically system monitor and the "top" command show 2 cpu cores when I only have 1 (a 3 Ghz P4 on my work computer).
I'm not sure if the two are related but I frequently get 100% CPU usage when running a few programs together (Kile, Firefox, Chrome and okular for example) at which point even the movement of the mouse cursor slows down.
JIt was easy to check in Windows, but I just wanted to know if there's a way to check if Ubuntu is utilizing both cores of my processor (Pentium Core 2 Duo).

I have just bought new PC (Intel mother board "Intel DP43TF ATX" and Processor "Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550"). and I have installed centos 5.3 32 bit.
NOTE: All cores are enabled in BIOS.
When I issue below command, it shows only one core (not 4 cores): what could be reason!

I recently switched my desktop from Fedora to CentOS. On Fedora it auto detects my refresh rate at 85 Hz. On CentOS by default it only allowed 60 Hz. I looked at the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and the display settings were:

I am running 64bit 10.10. For the last fortnight system has become very sluggish responding to input. Programs greyout and become completely unresponsive for long periods of time and cpu usage on one or both cores ramps up. As I type it is c.80% on both. System Monitor shows usage on the cores mirroring one another. top in terminal shows Xorg at 99%. I have attached a screenshot. I have rolled back and/or reloaded the Nvidia graphics drivers to no effect.

So i started my system and choose to boot linux, but it said display drivers not detected, linux running in low graphic mode, and it said 1. run windows in low graphic mode for now...2. reset to previous graphic mode- i chose this and it restarted, since then the ubuntu loading page appears and then my monitor goes blank although my processor is running.....why is this happening?.....i have a ati 5770 graphic card through which it should display.

So Opensuse cannot lower the speed of the CPU-cores. I tried updating the BIOS without luck. powernow-K8 under Opensuse version 11.1 (dual-boot) works perfect.
GNOME system monitor is constantly freezing and not responding when i click on first tab 'System' Do somebody knows some workarounds for this issue? It's the same on freshly installed system and also on updated GNOME 2.28 from stable repository.Sometimes on second or third atempt it is working, but i cannot accept such an level of unstability and bugs, discovered on daily basis of testing openSUSE 11.2. There are much more very basic issues in this release which are normal for beta stage, but not for almost 3 moths old system...

Everything went smooth and nice, and I did not made any changes to my system, when I saw that GNOME System Monitor freezes when clicking on the "System" tab.
Im running 11.2-64 with the stock KDE (3.5) included with the distro. Recently I messed about attempting an update of Amarok and phonon to get the graphic EQ back for music playback. The "messing about" was not with the one click install offered on the KDE website for 4.4.2.....and interestingly the messing about was the day before they "released" 4.4.2-- with the result that I ended up. trashing" the system and having to reload (didnt loose /home tho another reason why I love SUSe....)anyway I ve been looking around and have seen problems mentioned on the KDE forum with multi monitors in their 4.x desktop environment....it is tempting to "just push the button" on the 4.4.2 install and see what happens but Im not sure I want to spend another few hours here repairing things where I have my workspace back.
This machine is used in my home office, a core quad with 2 GB of RAM, Intel motherboard and a pair of NVidia GT 8500 PCIe cards running 3 monitors..... am curious if anyone is using 4.4.2 in a multi monitor environment, how the upgrade went and any problems with X server with the new environment?
I have a system with 1 GB RAM. I'm running KDE 4. I created a tab to look that the Physical Memory in the System Monitor program, which I assume appears to look at the same stats that "top" looks at. In that Physical Memory tab I have 3 tables: Used Memory, Free Memory, and Application Memory.The Used Memory table shows that the system is using .94 of .98 GiBytes. The Free Memory table shows that the system has .5 GiBytes of RAM free.
However the Application Memory shows that only 339 M-Bytes of RAM is being used.Note that "top" shows the same info.So where is the other .6 GiBytes of RAM that the Used Memory table shows as being used?If I look at the process table which is supposed to encompass all of the processes running, including the ones for the OS, then it appears to add up to the 339 M-Bytes being used in the Application Memory table. Is the rest of the memory being held in reserve by the OS to be used as needed? If so, then why when another application is opened the Free Memory goes down instead of staying constant?I also noticed this memory "black hole" when I was running 11.0 on a system with 4 GB of RAM. The OS appeared to "take up" a large chunk of memory that was NOT being used by any applications and making it "disappear" - meaning that the applications were using about 1.3 GiBytes of RAM and Free Memory was showing only .7 GiBytes instead of the over 2 GB of RAM that should be free.
I just installed 11.3 in one of my computers and I've noticed the resolution was sometimes changing after a reboot. First it was switching from 1280x1025 to 1024x768 with the default deivers, then I thought installing Nvidia propietary drivers would solve the problem, but now is switching between 1280x1024 and 640x480. After several attemps to fix it I found out that the system uses the correct resolution if it starts with the monitor switched on, but falls back to 640x480 if it's off when the system boots, which is almost always since I usually control this pc trough vnc.
I Tryed to specify the available resolutions in xorg.conf, and adding the preferred mode option, but it didn't help. I tryed also to use xrand in .profile to force 1280 resolution, but it doesn't work either (when the system is started with monitor off, xrand only shows 640x480 and 320x240 as available resolutions, and so does the system preferences panel).

I am facing problem with the fresh installation of Fedora 11. (I have moved from Fedora 9). When I try to view videos on ..... or use the Cheese Webcam Booth, I get blurred lines on the screen and I am unable to see any video or pic.
Also I noticed that the when i go to System > Preferences>Display, it shows me UNKOWN MONIOR.
However, if I got to System>Administration>Display and enter the su password, it shows me correct monitor and the graphics driver.
I am not sure if my original is related to the Unknown Monitor.
I also tried to install Nvidia driver but it crashed the xserver and I had remove the driver.
My Monitor is LG 700E and Graphics card is from intel. as I am not able watch any video.
i have installed ubuntu in my laptop.since i have AMD processor fedora doesnt support AMD processor..the recent version fedora 12 supprots AMD processor.i am doing my final project in ns2 hence it should support tht too!!! Which is the best choice to override ubuntu grub fedora 12 or redhat linux.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter installing the 32 bit desktop version 10.04 on vmware 6 and then rebooting ( a number of times) I get the message "the guest operating system has disabled the processor". This doesnt seem to happen when I install the 64bit version though. I have 9.1 running in 32bit versions in vmware and several other operating systems.I am not sure if any of those things would cause this issue but I have read in posts about people having issues with RAID and speed stepping. Hopefully that info can help spmepne point me in the right direction. Thank you.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe computer went into low graphics mode all by itself and then later threw a error that said incompatible processor system halted!the computer was getting really slow and made alot of noise.later the computer did something stranger..it restarted but normally when my computer normally restarts it bypasses the password page setup in bios of the computer. This time I still had to enter a password before it could reboot.Another thing...when it the ethernet cable was connected to the computer (internet connection was on) it was slow when it was unplugged it was not.I have read that unless you're running a server or something it is highly unlikeley you'll be hacked.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'll often run iceweasel for watching videos via flash (hulu, ....., et cetera) while working, in fedora I never noticed any performance problems, watching the video while using chrome for browsing, gedit for editing, et cetera, everything was responsive. Though, now on debian running iceweasel for the same purpose hogs memory and processor time, which slows down the responsiveness of the system as a whole, making it difficult to use other programs.I'm curious how I should go about troubleshooting this issue, and what diagnostics might help me find the solution.

View 2 Replies View RelatedopenSUSE 11.3 64-bit fully updated, running the latest K3B, 2.0.1. from the Packman repos with the codecs installed. Sometimes it starts up and runs fine, others the splash and then nothing. And again other times it will start and never show up until I reboot and then there it is. When I go to system monitor it will show under CPU% "disk sleep" if that helps. FWIW I have similar issues with Nero 4. I've added myself to the cd rom group and all of that.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is a triple-monitor setup with two video cards, where the mouse pointer gets "stuck" if it tries to cross from one video card to the next one. It worked correctly in openSUSE 11.2 and doesn't work in openSUSE 11.3 with the same xorg.conf. This is a 64-bit openSUSE 11.3 with xorg 7.5-11.3 (the openSUSE prepackaged version). I've already tried NVidia drivers 256.53-16.1 (the openSUSE NVidia repository version) and 260.19.12 (the latest off of the NVidia website).
This is the same xorg.conf that I used successfully in openSUSE 11.2. I tried a new automatically generated xorg.conf using nvidia-settings and it had the same problem. This forum won't let me upload the relevant files, but here: [URL] is a tar-ball with my xorg.conf, Xorg.*.log, /var/log/messages, and the NVidia debugging output.
just setup suse 11.3 , put on the Nvidia 19.29-22.1 drivers via yast , no kms is set in inetd , nomodeset on grub boot line etc... Even tried installing the driver " the hard way " dual monitors come up, setup xinerama to "Extend" my desktop , and the main monitor ( right side ) is good, visually the left monitor (2ndary) is good.. but whenever I move my mouse over to the left screen the mouse pointer dissapears, flickers along the right hand border of that screen... and if i move the cursor back to the original screen i have to really fight to get it back to the main screen....Copy of my xorg.conf , still very basic...

My config:
/dev/sda1 = 80 GB SSD drive, / partition.
/dev/sdb1 = 50 GB FAT32 partition of an external 500 GB USB hard disk.
/dev/sdb2 = remainder of the 500 GB USB hard disk encrypted using luks.
Screenshot: The /dev/sda1 figures don't really add up well, but they're close at least (how you get "50% Used" from any of those figures I don't know!).
However, for /dev/sdb2, they're miles off:
"Free" = 146.2 GiB
"Total" = 409.7 GiB
"Available" = 125.4 GiB
"Used" = 263.5 GiB

I have just installed Os 11.3, it is my first time to try Linux. Install went fine have Dual Boot Win7 and openSuse 11.3 KDE I have a 26" TFT TV as Monitor 1 DVI and Dell 16" as Monitor 2 VGA all working fine . Autoconfig started and TV display vanished, install finished and went into display settings to check problem and for some reason it is saying both displays are on my 16" Dell. I will Add Screen Shot to show problem. wanted to switch to Linux for years but never had the guts, i was hoping to learn Linux with this distro and when have a grip on it drop windows and use Linux as Primary.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAm investigating processor affinity theory and practice, am somewhat surprised at the paucity of information on something that has been a part of many Windows Enterprise type applications for more than a decade and although I haven't investigated would assume is supported by big iron UNIX.What it is Processor Affinity is the *NIX terminology for "soft" assigning a process and its threads to a specific processor core. On multi-tasking machines and particularly those which run heavy loads it can be useful to "advise" the Scheduler to isolate/assign heavy loads to a core separate from other processes. I also have a specific situation where I would like to run more than one instance of a specific app, but cannot when sharing the same processing environment.
What I've found so far By default, any and all processes are assigned an affinity that permits running on any and all available processors.The taskset utility can be used to modify the affinity for any process, which means that once an application/service/process has been launched, only then can the affinity be modified.It seems that the RH platform may also have a utility called tuna which might provide some tuning capabilities in addition to setting affinity but does not seem to be in the SuSE repositories and I cannot find source.Is there a reference or utility that can launch an application with a specified processor affinity?
