General :: Grub2 Detects Mac OSX On Sdb But Doesn't Install It To Grub.cfg

Feb 13, 2010

Working on a quad boot system. Two Karmic installs (I find I tend to hork one every once in a while by playing too much, so having a backup around is nice), windows 7, and Snow Leopard. I got everything up and running, except I had Leopard installed instead of snow leopard. At that time, I had the following:

sda1->win 7
sda2->leopard
sda5->karmic 1
sda6->karmic 2
(others for swap / extended / etc)

Grub2 detected everything just fine, made a real nice grub.cfg file and away I went.Now, I've made a change. Snow Leopard required GUID partitions and I had my stuff all set up as MBR and was /not/ about to reformat and start over. So I added a second drive, sdb.

Now, I can boot to that drive independently. Fine.I can boot to sda just fine and go to either Ubuntu install or windows just fine. Great. Grub2 finds Mac OSX on /dev/sdb2. Awesome (sdb1 is a fat32 bootloader for hackintosh reasons). It not only doesn't update grub.cfg, it leaves the old /dev/sda2 listing for my old Leopard install ... whose partition I deleted. It isn't visible anymore.

Code:

> sudo update-grub
Generating grub.cfg ...
Found Debian background: radar.png

[code]....

But nothing after Ubuntu 9.10 on /dev/sda6 shows up in grub.cfg? I'm at a loss. Any ideas how to get it to populate? I'd rather not hack grub.cfg and have to rebuild it by hand every once in a while especially as grub was fine with finding it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From GRUB To GRUB2 - Vista Doesn't Appear In Menu?

Apr 30, 2010

I tend to update stuff slower than most - I'm still using Hardy and I probably won't upgrade to Lucid until June-ish. I wanted to test drive GRUB2 so I upgraded following instructions here:When I chainloaded GRUB2, I got a menu that only contained Ubuntu; my Windows Vista bootloader entry had disappeared. I couldn't find a sample "40_custom" entry to modify when I tried to create an entry for Vista myself. Had no problem booting into Ubuntu and I could still boot Vista from the old menu. Spent about 20 minutes on it, then I gave up and reinstalled legacy GRUB.

Ubuntu :: Grub Rescue Only Detects HD0 (fsck, E2fsck, TestDisk)?

Oct 15, 2010

I (through TeamViewer) helped my mother (who is in Spain) updating her laptop to 10.10. I was of course doing this while doing other things at work, and managed to replace the Grub installation. Now the machine won't boot.
It stops in Grub Rescue.After having a look at the Grub Rescue Mode Megathread I made her type the command

Code:

ls

with the result that it only detects HD0

The previously mentioned thread then says:

Quote:

If all you get is (hd0) you most likely have a partition table or disk error. Seek assistance elsewhere! (fsck, e2fsck, TestDisk, etc.) It used to be (at least) two partitions on the disk, one with Win 7 and one with Ubuntu 10.04. I need to tell her (over the phone) to type in order to make the computer boot again? The laptop is, by the way connected to the Internet. Normally I am so careful when doing stuff like this, but today, I messed it up. And of course it had to be my 2500km's away mothers machine...

Ubuntu :: Grub2 Doesn't List Fedora, Even Though Upgrade-grub "finds" It?

Jan 21, 2010

In general I love Ubuntu Karmic, and think it's the most polished Gnome distro out there, but since installing it on my laptop alongside Fedora I haven't been able to boot into the latter.

I know that I could fix it by adding an entry into the 40_custom file, but wonder if there's a simpler fix.

The command
Quote:

sudo update-grub

actually finds and lists the Fedora Constantine kernel, but it still doesn't appear in the bootloader menu. Before I delve around and break something, does this mean that there's a line commented out in one of the config files?

I'm not going to slag off Grub 2 because I can see that it has clear benefits, especially for power users, and I don't mind change if it brings clear benefits. So long, /boot/grub/menu.lst.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Doesn't Detect WindowsXp After Karmic Install

Feb 15, 2010

I installed Ubuntu9.10 on a USB hard drive attached to my laptop. Laptop has pre-installed XP in the in-built hard-drive. Point to be noted is that my hard-drive is protected via encryption software called Pointsec.

The installation of Ubuntu on the USB hard drive went through fine and I'm able to boot Ubuntu from it.

But now the problem is, GRUB2 fails to detect the Windows XP installation.

Can someone tell me how I can force GRUB2 to boot Windows XP from hd0,0?

The GRUB1 way of configuring /etc/grub/menu.lst does NOT seem to work with GRUB2.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Dual Boot Grub2 Doesn't Install

Apr 26, 2010

I've just installed the 64 bit edition of 9.10 on my workstation. My raid drivers worked without any custom installation, which is very impressive! I am however having a problem installing grub2. I boot to the live CD, run the install process, resize and partition my free space as an ext4 primary partition with mount point /. Everything installs except grub, so I'm always booting in to windows.This seems to be a bit off as I've never had this occur with dual booting before.

CentOS 5 :: Grub Doesn't Automatically Boot OS After Install, Hangs At Grub Prompt?

Mar 21, 2011

I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.

When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img

General :: Chainloading With Grub And Grub2?

Dec 20, 2010

I multi-boot Windows XP and 5 Linux distros on a single hard drive. Some of the distros come and go but I keep at least two that are my daily use distros. My boot loader is grub1 located on a ext3 formatted distro. I have installed a distro that requests the partition be formatted ext4, which I did. I have been trying to edit my grub1 menu.lst so that I can chainload the ext4 distro get errors or it goes to the command line with the last word being Grub. My question is, can grub1 ext3 chainload a grub2 ext4 distro?

Here is a sample of my menu.lst
Code:
title MEPIS at sda7, newest kernel
root (hd0,6)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda7 nomce quiet splash vga=789
initrd /boot/initrd.img
boot

[Code]...

Mepis is the location of my menu.lst and is ext3 on sda7 and aptosid is the ext4 distro that I am trying to boot on sda9 and it uses grub2.

i have grub1 working and chaonloading truecrypt loader if i choose "win7" in grub1 menu I want to install a new kubuntu (no upgrade) I have read that that there are problems with grub2 and truecrypt actually a bug that grub2 dont chainloads truecrypt boot loader many ppl seem to have problems with grub2 then i read somewhere that ubuntu install is not asking for grub2 to be installed and just installing it. is this right?

i think at least for the alternative install cd its wrong. i installed it on another pc and it asked me! it works for win7 and Ubuntu and i guess its grub2 but there is no truecrypt installed anyway, i wanted to ask is the live cd installer asks me for grub2 and what is the best and easiest way to stay with my grub and just change the menu.lst to the new kernel (i guess there will be one)

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Doesn't See Windows 7 - Doesn't Appear In Boot Menu

i wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

Networking :: NIC Detects When Booting Live But Not After Install?

Jan 19, 2009

I am using a laptop with a realtek8139 integrated adapter. After installing the os, however, I go to configure the connection, and it tells me that no module has been loaded, so I should manually choose from the list. When I do, it tells me that it failed to load. I have also tried allowing it to probe by loading every possible driver, to no avail. I have reinstalled the os twice, and it does not recognize the adapter, but when I boot live, it works fine. Any reason why it would do this?

General :: Grub2 Setup On Ubuntu 10.04 Install

Jun 24, 2010

I have been asked to install Ubuntu 10.04 onto a friends machine but appear to be having some very basic problems. I think it may be related to the Grub 2. I do not consider myself a newbie but I am very inexperienced with Grub 2. I know a lot of the tricks of Grub Legacy, but this is driving me daft. It should be simple; a new hard drive, 500GB SATA, has been put into the computer, there are no other hard disks installed and the drive went in as empty.

Ubuntu booted fine into live CD mode without any issues, all of the hardware appeared to be working properly. I then installed it onto the machine, taking up the entire disk as per my friends request. When the installation finished everything seemed as normal, but upon startup I am greeted with a grub rescue prompt. Upon a bit of internet research I discovered that it may be simply that the 500GB is simply too big and that a seperate partition should be made for /boot.

This was done however now I do not even get to the grub rescue prompt after checking the DVD drive for bootable media the computer simply sits at a blinking cursor. I have made sure that grub 2 was installed and setup to look for the /boot partition but these all check out and I am still stuck with the same problem. I am considering simply installing 8.04 LTS and then updating and that should solve my issue of Grub 2, but I know that is avoiding the problem and I will need to learn about Grub 2 at some point.
