I made a bootable USB drive using Universal USB Installer on Windows 7. When I try to boot from it, my computer never detects it, however it did detect the USB DVD drive. How can I check if the USB drive is actually bootable?

I am using both K3b and Basero to try and burn a DVD Iso. Both programs show that I need to insert blank media in the drive, however the disk utility shows that I have an unformatted disk in the DVD-RAM drive. Using Ubuntu 10.10 with wine installed. I mention wine because I remember messing with it a while back to get a multi disk install to work and needing to mess around with mounting the disks in odd configurations however cant remember exactly what I did. (It was a late night)

Normally in my music collection, I have some songs that are the same song, just in a different album. When transferring files onto my MP3 player, if it detects the same name for the song, even though they are on different albums, it says that I have to either replace the file, retry, or cancel.

I just bought a new desktop. I want to set it up as a dual boot windows/ubuntu. I installed my copy of XP on it with no problems. When I ran the Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 installer, the drive partitioner keeps coming up blank. There is no drive map, and all of the controls are faded out. I tried it with just windows on the hard drive first. Then I used GParted to reduce the size of the windows partition and make the rest into an ext4 file system. Same result. I had no problems with this on my Vista/Ubuntu laptop. If anyone has any idea what I'm doing wrong

I put a blank CD (Verbatim CD-R) into my external CD drive using 10.04 LTS. Dmesg shows:
[ 255.950512] sr 3:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[ 255.950527] sr 3:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
[ 255.950542] sr 3:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Logical block address out of range
[ 255.950558] sr 3:0:0:0: [sr0] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00
[ 255.950589] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
When I go to /media there are no directories that could be the CD-ROM. I therefore cannot 'see' the CD (which is blank btw). I then went into XP. Windows Explorer could see the blank CD. I then wrote to it. I then went back into Ubuntu. Now when I put the CD into the external drive Dmesg shows:
[97.594505] ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3
[97.674629] ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A
When I go to /media I see the name of the CD. Why will XP and Ubuntu see the CD with information on it but only XP can see the blank CD?

My new PC fails boot when having my IDE DVD drive connected. If the drive is removed the OS boots up without any issue. Once the PC is powered ON, the grub menu shows up, but when Ubuntu 10.10 is selected I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor on the top left corner and I have only option to force shutdown the CPU.ON selecting windows 7 i'm able to boot successfully and use the DVD drive without any problems.

I downloaded the OS I wished to use, loaded it onto a clean 4.0GB drive, everything went as planned. But then I rebooted, and it never booted the file off of the USB. So, I changed the boot options, and tried it again. Now, every time I boot with the drive in, it goes normally and then opens a blank page with only one line of text detailing the date of copyright, something about Linux, etc... And a blinking cursor. Is this normal and I just have to wait for it to load, or is something not being processed? Any information you guys need I can obtain, I'm not new to computers but I am new to changing OS's.

After the mass amount of updates that appeared for Debian, my DVD drive seems to detect a burned DVD I have as blank now. And when i put in the disc, there's two copies of the DVD drive on Computer, both of which are labeled CD/DVD Drive: Blank DVD-ROM Disc. I have gone in to disc manager and found that it is possible to mount the volume on the disc, and on the second icon it will appear and work. However, this is annoying having two icons.
Now, when I don't have a disc in there, it only shows one drive. My PC may have messed up during the updates, because I just let it update in the background while my sister was using it to show my mom's friends pictures and she randomly closed out of one of the windows without asking me anything (ffff), so that may have messed something up. Does anyone know how I would go about fixing this?

this is my first time doing a custom partition, I tried to do it with only the assistance of reading as I go, but I don't believe I found enough information last night. What I am trying to do, is put openSUSE on 200gb out of 500gb space on my external hard drive, as well as on 50gb space out of 110gb on my internal hard drive. The remaining 60gb space on my internal drive is going to be for microsoft windows. The remaining 300gb space on my external drive will be storage space. It seems like what I want to do is achievable
What I want is to have my main openSUSE on the external drive (primary partition I think?), with the GRUB loader so that when the external drive is not plugged in, my little brother can use windows on my internal hard drive. I tried this last night, and when installation had finished, I rebooted my computer and the screen was just blank black with the flashing white line as if waiting for me to type, although it would not allow me to type when I tried. It would be great if someone could tell me the order in which to partition, including the terms primary partition, extended partition, and logical partition, as needed.. I don't want to permanently muck up this machine.

I post here wanting to know if it's Possible to run wvdial as soon as linux detects USB modem.I have already installed and done the setting for using wvdial. I can successfully use wvdial command to setup internet connection. But I have only 1 USB modem. When my wife wants to use it for her PC, she disconnects it from my linux machine. What I want to do now is... 1 that when I attatch the USB back to my linux, I'd want it to do "wvdial &" automatically.2 that when linux is rebooted, "wvdial &" done automatically as soon as it detects USB modem.

I (through TeamViewer) helped my mother (who is in Spain) updating her laptop to 10.10. I was of course doing this while doing other things at work, and managed to replace the Grub installation. Now the machine won't boot.
It stops in Grub Rescue. After having a look at the Grub Rescue Mode Megathread I made her type the command
Code:
ls
with the result that it only detects HD0
The previously mentioned thread then says:
Quote:
If all you get is (hd0) you most likely have a partition table or disk error. Seek assistance elsewhere! (fsck, e2fsck, TestDisk, etc.) It used to be (at least) two partitions on the disk, one with Win 7 and one with Ubuntu 10.04. I need to tell her (over the phone) to type in order to make the computer boot again? The laptop is, by the way connected to the Internet. Normally I am so careful when doing stuff like this, but today, I messed it up. And of course it had to be my 2500km's away mothers machine...

I just got rid of my Dell P990 CRT and replaced it with a Samsung B2330H LCD. I got the resolution changed to 1920x1080 at 60hz through System/Preferences/Monitors and the new display looks great! There is one problem, though: the computer boots into a resolution that is not supported by the new monitor. As a result, the login screen is blank. The monitor puts a little floating message on the screen that says, "Optimum Resolution is 1920x1080..." When I start up, I hear the "bongo sound" and I hit ENTER, then enter my password, then ENTER again, and the computer desktop appears in 1920x1080 and all is well. But how do I get the login screen to appear in 1920x1080?
This is Ubuntu 10.4, using the Intel onboard card. Here's the output of lspci:
Code:
I have installed the Startup Manager, but it does not allow 1920x1080 to be selected. I have also tried using Startup Manager to select other resolutions, but the login screen is still blank.
Isn't there some trick to force the login screen to appear in a specific resolution using xrandr? What file does this command go into? Maybe my old configuration files from my Dell monitor are interfering?

I've been having this problem for some time now, but none of the fixes for other flash problems have worked (re-installing Flash, installing Flash-aid, disabling compiz, upgrading Firefox, etc), and I can't seem to find a similar thread.
My issue is this, if I go to a site in Firefox that uses flash like ....., megavideo, grooveshark, or slacker.com and begin to load a video, song, or station, I can't open any other windows or switch to another desktop without the app freezing and going blank; sometimes it just shows white space as if nothing were ever posted, other times it shows a grey box where the app was, but no longer works. If I right click in these spaces, nothing happens as when I right click on, say, a megavideo video and get a drop-down list. The only thing that solves the problem is refreshing the page.
I never had this problem with older versions of ubuntu like jaunty, and it's rather annoying since I can't do anything else while a video is loading or music is playing.

I am using a laptop with a realtek8139 integrated adapter. When I boot the live cd (Puppy), I go to configure the internet connection, and shows the module for the card has automatically loaded, and I just set it to DHCP and that is all. After installing the os, however, I go to configure the connection, and it tells me that no module has been loaded, so I should manually choose from the list. When I do, it tells me that it failed to load. I have also tried allowing it to probe by loading every possible driver, to no avail. I have reinstalled the os twice, and it does not recognize the adapter, but when I boot live, it works fine. Any reason why it would do this?

I am trying to install Slackware64-current into a virtual image. The hardware is 64bit and the host system is Slackware-13.1 (32-bit).
Code:
The installation DVD iso starts to boot and then says
Quote:
This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU
It says this no matter what variable I use for -cpu
Any ideas how I can modify the command to allow Slackware64-current to install in a 32-bit kvm-qemu image running on 64-bit hardware.

I have a Sager NP5797 running Lucid (32-bit) with a BisonCam NB Pro (V4L2) webcam on /dev/video0 In Flash (like [URL]), everything works great. My video appears to both myself and others, and I see incoming video. (I am using the 10.1 RC libflashplugin.so, downloaded from Adobe's site) But in applications like Cheese, Skype, etc., I get a big blank white box where video should be: Cheese (as well as every other app I try) sees the camera on /dev/video0:
In Skype, the person I am calling sees my video perfectly fine. So my camera is "working" and sending video. But I cannot see my video, nor can I see their incoming video. It's all a big white box just like the one in Cheese in the shot above. Taking the other person out of the equation, when I go to use the "test" in Skype, it's just a blank white box too. The video will not draw for me.
Again, I do see video in Flash-based web apps that use the webcam. And other people are seeing my video. But webcam video (both mine and the incoming stream) won't "draw" for me. What makes V4L video not draw? I am using the binary NVIDIA driver for the GTX 280M chip in the laptop, and I am using Compiz. Though I tried turning Compiz off and Cheese still just showed the white box.

Flash (via Firefox) was working until a day or so ago, but now the content that is supposed to be viewable with Flash simply sits there and does nothing or comes up as a blank screen. I've tried several web pages, all with the same problem. Every indication, including the Adobe test page, shows that Flash is installed, although the Firefox page for "Manage Content Plugins" lists "Gnash SWF Player"as the application for x-shockwave-flash. If I try to install Flash again, I'm told that it's already installed. I can disable it in Firefox but I don't see how to remove it altogether so that I can reinstall it. How can I get my Flash content working again?
