5 Hardware :: Want To Set Up Motion On CentOS - It Wont Accept My Webcam / Fix It?

I want to set up Motion on my CentOS 5.5-server because I thought it would be awesome to have.
But my machine wont accept my webcam for some reason. I tried it on Ubuntu server in VMware and it worked flawlessly (but I dont like Ubuntu).

Could it be the driver? I downloaded some package called kmod-v4l-somthing from EL-Repo without success.

The webcam is a Creative Live! Cam Socialize HD (should work with kernel 2.6 or higher)
Kernel-version: 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 (newest)

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Sony Motion Eye Webcam - Firmware Loading

Jul 9, 2010

Well, after searching several forums and trial and error, I finally got my builtin webcam to work. Its r5u870 05ca:1836. The only problem I now have is that after a hard boot (system was powered down), I then have to do a soft boot for this to work properly. It seems to me that the problem is the firmware loading. Obviously, doing a shutdown -r means that the firmware remains in the webcam device and then everything seems OK.

After a soft boot:
linus:~/bin # lsmod|grep -e sony -e uvc -e r5u
r5u870 26436 0
usbcam 47808 1 r5u870

Video driver: x11
A window manager is available
video /dev/video0
/dev/video0 does not support read i/o .....

After a hard boot, luvcview will not display anything after the line beginning with

How to make this all work without the soft reboot?

Software :: Cheese / Webcam Recording Success Stories?

Feb 12, 2010

Not sure if this is right place or not but i'm looking for some success stories of Cheese and external webcams or built in netbook cameras. Would love to see some actual examples.

Here is the type of behavior I seem to always* get:[URL].. *I have tried 3 different computers, dell 8100 (1.5 ghz p4, 256 ram), ibm thinkcentre (1.4ghz p4, 512 ram), ibm thinkpad t42 (1.7ghz p3, 1gb ram) and several different webcams (2 old logitech cameras, ps3eye, ms lifecam show) running either fedora or ubuntu.

see also this post for some other movies of a system i had similar problems with:[URL].. here is a list of cams that work with skype but i find skype and cheese to be different as it's the RECORD feature that seems to cause the problems. displaying the feed is never too bad, but recording seems to break the feed. [URL].. So i'm looking to know if anybody out there has had success with cheese or another webcam RECORDING program on linux. i'm working on several videobooth [URL]... and would love to permanently ditch my mac for linux but having trouble finding acceptable performance in this area.

Software :: Recording Video / Pics From Webcam Or Streaming

Jun 7, 2011

I have a USB webcam connected to a server (dmesg output below). It is currently running Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS server edition. So it has no X, and I don't want to install any. What I am looking for is a command line program to capture video from this webcam and store it. Also, something that can capture just pictures would be nice (but once I have a video file, I know how to get individual pictures from that). A nice plus would be setting this up as a video stream for other computers to stream the video from (to do what they can do with a stream, like view it in real time, capture individual pictures, save it). If setting up a stream makes the capture part easier, I could go for that. This camera works in the cheese GUI program on a desktop. Colors are bad in bright lights, but then, it's a cheap camera.

I prefer the output/stream in a free/libre video format (vp8/webm, ogg/theora, or dirac), but other formats that Linux software exists for (to record and play) can work if the free ones can't be done. Google finds lots of GUI ways to do this (mostly references to cheese). I did find one page that suggests "mencoder". But it doesn't find this webcam. I found a camera stream server called "camserv". It seems to find this camera, but then freezes. When I start camserv, the camera's blue light goes off, but no video is ever delivered from a web page reference. When I stop it, the camera is in an unusable state and has to be unplugged to reset it (so it can be used with "cheese"). So I'm looking for other software.

Software :: V4l2 Webcam Program - Cannot Identify Dev Video

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Execute Command Using Php To Start Program That Grabs Screen From Webcam?

Apr 8, 2010

I'm trying to setup a webcam surveillance system. Zoneminder didn't work for me regardless of how I tried configuring it, so I gave up and have now settled on a more primitive solution. I've currently got 6 cams and looping streamer (webcam screen grabber) I can grab a picture from each camera with about a 1 second interval. The previous picture is overwritten and using javascript to reload the image continuously in a browser I get the desired "movie" effect I'm after. The problem however is that as soon as I start using streamer on more than two cameras at once I run into this little snag:

Quote:

libv4l2: error turning on stream: No space left on device
ioctl: VIDIOC_STREAMON(int=1): No space left on device

I've been searching around and it seems I need to increase my shared memory. I've done that (tried many different values and "solutions") but the problem remains the same.

My setup is as follows.

1.php (refreshes updated grab from camera 1 every second in the browser)
2.php (refreshes updated grab from camera 2 every second in the browser)
3.php (refreshes updated grab from camera 3 every second in the browser)
etc
etc.

Is it possible to use something like php exec to execute the command that starts 'streamer' that grabs the image from the specific webcam (/dev/video1 for 1.php and so forth) when 1.php is opened in the browser. Is this even possible, or am I just dreaming?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Use 'motion' Package

Feb 24, 2011

i can handle basics but once i get into coding it confuses me. i downloaded motion and webcam-server onto my other computer on the local network, but all i really want to do is access a live feed from my main box and be able to record a video if need be, for security purposes (we had a break-in awhile back). after starting motion, it saved a few .jpgs to the tmp folder, then i shut it down and restarted it as a test, now it's not even doing that, i'll post the readout of what it spat out in a minute. how do i (1) disable the .jpg saving feature, (2) enable video recording, (3) run it in the background (as a daemon?) without the terminal window being visible onscreen, and (4) access it on the main box? also, i couldn't seem to edit the motion.conf file even though i'm an administrator.

Ubuntu :: Can't Quit Motion In Terminal / Way To Do

Jul 26, 2011

I have installed this but it is command line and i don't know how to quit the thing. Motion is command line. It keeps capturing unless i shutdown the computer. Very frustrating. I also would like help to understand how to configure Motion if someone can fill in the information gaps on this website
http://www.chriswpage.com/2009/05/se...04-and-motion/
I have also tried zoneminder but it does not want to run for some reason. I have gone to the zoneminder forum and asked but i don't seem to get very far. They got me to download a zoneminder/ubuntu live cd. I used that but it wasn't seeing the camera. Whereas on the distro i have right now cheese, kamoso so see it.
I can live stream with Motion within firefox but i need the motion capturing part configured and without something that will quit Motion the app it's a bit useless. Would appreciate some advice as i have been struggling a long time trying to get this security thing happening

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting With Motion Controller?

Jun 9, 2010

I'm having a problem connecting a motion controller through the Ethernet port. Here is what it does If I connect the Ethernet cable from the computer to the controller, the connection is not recognized. If I connect it from the computer to my router, it will connect automatically. If the computer is connected to the router, and I unplug the router and quickly connect the controller, it will automatically recognize it.Also, when I connect the controller with quickly unplugging the router, I can't manually connect it using the wired connection "Auto eth 2". When I click on it, it thinks for a while and then says Wired Network Disconnected.

Is there a way to initialize the Ethernet port automatically to recognize the motion controller, or is there a way to do it using C++ (that is what I'm suing to communicate to the card since it has special libraries) I find this kind of weird. I want to just be able to plug in the controller and be able to use it.
