CentOS 5 :: VMware Server Only Detects 1 Of 2 Quad Core CPU?

Jan 22, 2010

Sadly, I google'd the heck out of this and even the vmware community has no answers. So, I decided to turn to the experts and see if you can provide a better solution than [URL]. The system sees both CPU's and all of the cores (cat /proc/cpuinfo). I have tried with HT and without HT (I never run HT anymore; seems to hurt performance in my workloads). I've tried the recent and newest kernels for CentOS 5.4 and still have no luck. There seems to be lots of people having this issue, but no real solutions.

kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5 #1 SMP x86_64

CentOS 5 Hardware :: No Throttling Scalling Speedstep On Xeon Quad-Core

Jun 30, 2009

System recognizes that CPU is capable of throttling, but there is no module to govern it. So Xeon always runs at full frequency. This is not convenient as my server is not always in full use, so I would like it to lower power consumption, especially for AC, with frequency scaling enabled. Can you help me is this some bug, misconfiguration in default kernel or guys who writes kernel think that scaling is not necessary for servers processors?

From my analysis so far, I think that the issue lies with the fact that module acpi-cpufreq does not support Xeons and that there is no dedicated module for this processor family (e.g. p4-clockmod) module in the default kernel.

General :: Migrating To 64bit Quad Core System

Mar 11, 2010

In the past, I've deployed new 64 bit systems and I've worked on and developed on 64 bit systems. But until a week ago, my workstation was a 32 bit system. Now, it is a 64 bit quad core Phenom II system, and I suppose I need to start the migration to 64 bit Linux. I do not want to blow off my system and rebuild it. This particular system dates back a decade and through many many updates. There is some digital debris in it, but there is also a fair amount of customization that I have implemented either for my own purposes or for customers, and to lose that customization would represent a headache for me.

What I want to do is install a 64 bit system over top of the 32 bit system. It is my hope that doing this would install the necessary 64 bit libraries, while not impacting the existing 32 bit libraries (except with some possible symlink problems). I then, hopefully, could boot into a 64 bit kernel while still running 32 bit programs. Is this feasible? My backup system is comprehensive; I COULD just try it and back up if my system became hosed. But I'd rather not; I have a lot of work to do and I'd rather not learn by doing in this case.

Fedora Hardware :: I7-640M Dual Core Recognized As Quad?

May 27, 2011

I installed Fedora 15 on my relatively new Laptop machine and stumbled upon an odd thing:Even though my CPU is an Intel i7-640M dual core (2x 2.8 Ghz) it somehow seems to be recognized as a quad. System monitor shows 4 CPUs (all of the used to some extend) and even "cat /proc/cpuinfo" gives me 4 processors:

Code:

processor: 0
vendor_id: GenuineIntel
cpu family: 6

[code]...

At the same time the system (while relatively stable) is incredibly slow when it comes to complicated calculations (I do neuron simulations on a custom C++ framework).

CentOS 5 Server :: Building VMWare Virtual Machines From CentOS Mail Servers?

Oct 12, 2010

I have a few mail servers, a mail log server and a web server running on Centos 5. Now I have a task: to avoid accidental crashes on the production servers while installing updates, my boss asked me to do clones (these clones will all be VMware virtual machines) of the servers (EXCLUDING the actual e-mails and log contents) and then to run those clones on VMWare Server. This way, first I will install and test updates on the clones and - if they will be running without crashes - I will apply the updates on the real production servers themselves.

I have already installed VMWare Server 2.0 I have a few questions: How do I build the virtual machines to exclude the actual mail files and mail logs? Can I use VMware Converter for this purpose, or do I have to use another program? How do I actually do this cloning? Is there a tutorial on how to do this?

CentOS 5 :: Unable To Install Centos 5.5 X86_64 On Vmware Server 2.0.2?

Nov 6, 2010

I have an i5 Thinkpad running Windows 7 64-bit. VT is enabled in the BIOS. I have installed vmware server v 2.0.2 but am unable to install Centos 5.5 x86_64 as a guest OS. The steps that I followed are as follows:1. Created a new VM, specifying RHEL 5 64-bit as the intended guest OS (per vmware documentation - Centos is not available as a selection2. Downloaded all 8 iso files for Centos v5.5 64-bit3. Modified the CD/DVD drive to 'connect at power' and use an iso with the path pointing to the x86_64 iso 1 of 8When I power up the VM, the console window displays 'ISOLINUX 3.11 2005-09-02 Copyright (C) 1994-2005 H. Peter Anvin' and nothing else. The installation splash screen never appears. As a test, I downloaded the first of 7 iso files for the 32-bit version of Centos 5.5 and pointed the CD/DVD drive to that iso. In that case, the installation starts as expected. I would really like to get the 64-bit version installed and running.

CentOS 5 :: Timedrift In Vmware Server?

Jun 25, 2010

Be it with different options to grub.conf... different options to vmware .vmx file ...

Configuration: host box that have an Intel Quad Core CPU Q8300.

Host is CentOS 5.5 64bit, VmWare 1.0.10, guests are CentOS 5.5 32bit (and an Ipcop test box that have 2.4.x kernel)

Considering the 3 CentOS 5.5 32 bit guests (same config for grub and ntpd), I have 1 VM that usually havent' any timedrift, the remaining 2 VMs gain about 15 mins every hour (!!!). constantly, indipendently from load or Similar problem for the IpCop VM.

I need to disable ntpd daemon and put a cron job because ntpd seems not work (but manual ntpdate work, so no fw problem). Sometime is one of the VM that have no driftime problem; after some host reboot, is another. No matter how I configure it (apparently). The VM's hwclock have little or no drift, the system clock have the drift ... I can't find any logic on this ... Some months ago I use Vmware Server 2.x, but switched to 1.x for the annoyng glib problem and the not appreciated new interface. Initially no problems, next (little time before updating the host from 5.4 to 5.5), problems started ... so no apparent ralations with update from 5.4 to 5.5.

General :: Vmware Server 2.0.2 Installation On 12 - Making Sure Services For VMware Server Are Stopped

May 19, 2010

I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed

The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".

Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".

I tried this command and find the this message

[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]

Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"

CentOS 5 :: VMware Server 2.0.1 On 5.3 Has Tainted Kernel - Can't Access VM Web Interface?

Apr 26, 2009

I can install VMware Server 2.0.1 on CentOS 5.3 (32-bit and 64-bit) perfectly. However, I can't access Server's web interface by going to port 8222 on the machine's IP address. When CentOS 5.3 (32 or 64-bit) is loading, I am greeted with this message "VM communication interface socket family: vsock: no version for "VMCIDatagram_Send" found: kernel tainted." I assume this is the reason why I can't access my Server through a web browser. How do I correct this? Is there a package I need to install on CentOS prior to installation of Server 2.0.1?

It's strange, because I can install 2.0.1 on Ubuntu Server 8.10 with absolutely no problem and access its web interface. So I think this might be a CentOS-specific issue I've uncovered.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Infiniband (mlx4) Works On 16-core System But (now) Fails On 32-core System

Jan 27, 2010

We have a small cluster of 20 HP systems, all running CentOS 5.3 in an NFS-root environment. Half are quad-socket, quad-core Xeon E7340 @ 2.40GHz (total 16 cores), the other half are 8-socket, quad-core Opteron 8354 (total 32 cores). All systems have a Mellanox Infiniband adapter ("Mellanox Technologies MT25418 [ConnectX VPI PCIe 2.0 2.5GT/s - IB DDR / 10GigE] (rev a0)")

With kernel 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5, infiniband works fine on all systems.

With the update to kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5 (and both types of node running the same NFS-root image), the 16-core Xeons still work fine. Infiniband no longer works on the 32-core Opterons. Specifically, either the ib0 interface fails to appear, or it does appear but when configured with an IP address, doesn't actually work. In either case, loading the IB kernel modules takes a long time, but I haven't instrumented the load script yet to see which module, if any, is at fault. More errors listed below.

However, if I tweak the BIOS of the 32-core systems to reduce the per-socket core count to 2 (so effectively 8-socket, dual-core, down to a total of 16 available cores), Infiniband starts working again. Putting it back to 32-cores makes it fail. Booting the older kernel makes it work again. In summary: old kernel, IB works on all systems. Newer kernel, IB only works on 16-core systems.

Updating the IB firmware from 2.5.0 to 2.7.0 (latest available) doesn't help. I also did a full 'yum update' to make sure that libmlx4, openibd all other associated packages were up-to-date. Doesn't help either.

Some errors that appear on 32-core nodes:

ib_query_port failed (-16) for mlx4_0
ib_query_port failed (-16) for mlx4_0
mlx4_core 0000:04:00.0: SW2HW_MPT failed (-16)
