I am trying to change to boot order in grub, but I keep running into the same problem.I find instructs me to go to /boot/grub/menu however that file doesnt exist on my computer. in my /boot/grub directory file names go from memrw.mod to minicmd.com with nothing in between.I am using an up to date release of Karmic Koala.
View 2 RepliesDue to a motherboard issue, I need to edit a parameter in the "etc/default/grub" file.
However, the problem is, that file doesn't exist.
Grub does seem to be installed, I can get into grub from the command line etc.
This is a fresh install of Ubuntu Server - 10.04.2 LTS
Brand new box, no previous installs of anything, no other operating systems etc.
Is there somewhere else that file could reside ? I tried find -name '*grub*' and got plenty of files, but none are the one that I need.
Is there someway to generate this file ?
I remember when installing from the CD it asking about grub, but I don't recall which option I chose, it was whichever one was the default.
This thing won't reboot right after power loss etc until I can edit that value... which at the moment seems to not exist....
Btw, I'm not a total linux noob but far from an expert, so I may need any answers "dumbed down" a bit.

It seems that I have regular "grub" and not "grub2" installed... I'm assuming that is part of the problem ?
My version: grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97)
Does this version of grub allow you to edit options etc ?
Specifically, what I need to do, is edit this value: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
I need to add "reboot=a" to this line.
PC: Dell Precision T7400.O/S: Windows XP SP3 64-bit & Scientific Linux 5.3 64-bit
The above PC has 2 HDDs installed one has XP and the other Scientific Linux.
Problem: XP needed to be re-installed, i've done this now but now the GRUB Boot loader doesnt load - So just boots straight into XP.
Qustion: Is there anywhere to fix the GRUB? Without wiping the 2nd HDD and re-installing Linux!

Whenever I try to boot my computer, GRUB (Version 2) says "File Not Found". It does this for all entries except the Memtest86+ entries, which work fine. I have tried reinstalling GRUB, but it still does the same thing.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed Ubuntu Karmic on my laptop, which also has Windows 7. It now has GRUB, and I have been able to modify some settings via the GRUB command line. However, these changes are not permanent; they are reset the next time I load GRUB. I have seen many people trying to configure GRUB who have been pointed towards /boot/grub/menu.lst. I expect it would) I went to edit that file... and discovered that it did not exist. I am certain that I am using GRUB, not some other bootloader. Is there another possible way to configure GRUB, or somewhere else I might look for this file?

Now that Ive converted it to 10.04 (completely) it can see the network, but it just wont connect to it. I had no problem converting my computer to Ubuntu and it sees the network and accesses it great. Files, folders and hard drives are all shared. So, one computer connects great, the other does not.**I dont know what to do at this point.Here is the layout:My Comp (10.04) ---------......Main Network Comp (XP)Wife Comp (10.04) -------/The main network computer is XP as it has software on it we need that does not work in Wine. The main computer will have to stay XP. I cannot get my wifes computer to connect to the main system, although mine connects just fine. I dont know what the problem is. I tried to do my parents a favor by installing Ubuntu 9.10 alongside WinXP on their PC -- same configuration I have on my desktop at home. The install went fine, but since I made a poor buying decision on purchasing a MSI motherboard in the past, Ubuntu immediately crashes after boot (other MSI board users having the same issue, no help from MSI).
The computer tries to boot Ubuntu by default unless something else is selected from the boot menu. How do I change the boot preference from default (choice 0) to WinXP? I tried manually changing this (editing the grub.cfg file), but the file said not to edit, that it's generated by something else...How do I have WinXP load by default instead of the broken Ubuntu?
i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file
View 5 Replies View RelatedI followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l
And got this:
Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.

I've been using 10.04 for a few months without any problems, but today, I tried to boot into Ubuntu and just got a black screen. I tried the tutorial on this site, and it worked.
I have to do this after every reboot unless I edit the /etc/default/grub file (the second part of the tutorial). I'm not sure how to go about doing this since the article is very vague.
I'm trying to configure GRUB to boot XP preferentially- my wife insists. Having looked up the GRUB manual I see that I can set this using the default command.
The problem is, when I go to my grub command line default is not a recognized command. If I hit TAB for a list of commands, it isn't there.
I think I'm using some 0.9x version of GRUB, since the partitions etc seem to be numbered starting at 0, not 1.
While I'm at it, I was just going to play around and figure this out, but: the menu interface lists five versions of Ubuntu (all those weird kernel variations) then XP. So would XP be default 1 or default 5?
I Just updated my 10.04 LTS system, which dual boots Windows XP. Prior to the update the default was to boot to XP, now it is to Memtest.
I tried to edit /etc/default/ grub and make the default be 14 instead of 12, which would be XP, but Ubuntu, (using gedit), refused to accept my change.
I don't have a problem scrolling around to pick XP, or the latest Linux kernel to boot, but my wife sure does. How can I make Ubuntu/Grub default to to XP ?
I am trying to install my laptop in a triple-boot configuration with Fedora 10, Windows XP and Windows 7 beta. I did already installed them in that order. This is how it is layed out on the harddisk:
Now i want to use grub to present a menu at boot so i can select an OS. Because I installed XP last it boots straight into XP. I've understood i should be able to do the following:
All goes well until the last step (grub-install). It gives an error stating that /dev/sda doesn't exist, which is correct; It doesn't. I do have the "device" listed outside of the chrooted environment.
My question is: How do I get /dev/sda available in my chrooted environment?
I have 9.10 installed, grub has loaded and worked, now all of a sudden nothing will boot.The HP screen comes up and then the computer reboot, constant reboot cycle. Can't even get into the BIOS. It will just sit there if I hit escape. Won't boot the live cd either. What can I do??? It has worked fine for the past month now.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI loaded Kubuntu 9.1 and got a mess in the Grub 2 Boot Menu, which I can't correct.
I get extra choices in the Boot menu, and the first few, which are supposedly for Kubuntu Karmic Koala all put me in a shell, which ends in a black screen, then shows up a shell once I hit "enter". Then I just have a "intramfs" (?) prompt.
So I went into Grub2 to change it, and it refuses to do it. All I get is a screen full of error messages every time I try, with no change. Apparently it is looking to access drive sdb8, which is non-existent. I DO have a drive sda8, though.
So with all the wonderfulness of the indirect system to change Grub 2 how am I supposed to set it right? The old Grub worked fine, and just took simple changes to the menu.lst file.
Can't somebody write a program that lets Grub 2 be changed from within the program, rather than all this running around trying to find what file to change, and how to get the change to work?
Just to be clear, here are the errors as they show up when grub-update is flailing around:

I'm extreemly new to Ubuntu and installed 10.04 onto a partition this morning. When I boot up my PC a menu called GRUB comes up and the list of OS's has ubuntu 1st. If I dont change my selection to vista it automatically boots into ubuntu. How can I change the order or default booting OS? I have seen other people talk about it but I'm not sure if it's up to date.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI think my Natty 64 bit install is missing a dependency for gk, even though it shows up install in Synaptic. I have also tried using Start up Manager and the changes I make there don't show up after restarting either. I just want to change the default boot to number 4, Windows. Any suggestions are welcome, but I have tried all the ones I've found on this forum so far and none have worked, including editing etc/grub/default and saving with sudo update-grub. That's when I get a "gk not found" error.

I basically wanted grub to not pop-up and just boot the default version of Ubuntu. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been helped by repo in this post [URL]..Here's a quick resume: I made changes in the grub menu for just one boot I selected the first option Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.35-27-generic edited the Linux /vmlinux ro quiet splash by adding irqpoll to the end. I rebooted and the system booted correctly into the GUI.
I then tried to edit the /etc/default/grub file by booting into the recovery mode, opening a terminal, using command sudo vi /etc/default/grub and adding irqpoll to the end of the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX DEFAULT="quiet splash". Followed by update-grub to update the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file
Unfortunately when I try to reboot I find that the system will not boot and hangs as before on the purple screen after a logon. I know that I have edited the /etc/default/grub file correctly because I have confirmed this by reviewing the file. So my question is why does the "one boot method" work but the edit file method not work ? I must be doing something wrong.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu Server 10.04. When I reboot, it stops at a "grub>" prompt. I figured out that I can continue booting by entering these four commants:
set root=(hd0,1)
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-21-generic-pae root=/dev/sda1 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic-pae
boot
I can't figure out, however, how to save these as the default so that the machine can boot without someone present to enter these commands. Running "grub-set-default" tells me "entry not specified." I don't see anywhere in /etc/default/grub that looks relevant.
How do I save my default grub settings?
I just got to finish installing ubuntu lastest version on my new netbook, im really exited about how powerful it can get. The thing is, I'm still keeping my old Windows 7 partition and data, and I want to access it faster, editing the grub options, to change the timer on it, and the default booting option.

I have tried the guides where it says you have to edit the "menu.lfg(or whatever it is)" and I don't have that file. I have looked, it's not there, the closest I found was "grub.cfg" and I can't make any sense out of it. I have deleted Windows XP, meaning that my system does not contain Windows XP.
I did a clean installation of Ubuntu 10.04 and I found that after the computer booted, the GRUB stopped by waiting for entering command -- "grub >". The GRUB version is 1.98. I want to go directly to the GRUB boot menu after computer booted.
