Jan 5, 2010I tried to do my parents a favor by installing Ubuntu 9.10 alongside WinXP on their PC -- same configuration I have on my desktop at home. The install went fine, but since I made a poor buying decision on purchasing a MSI motherboard in the past, Ubuntu immediately crashes after boot (other MSI board users having the same issue, no help from MSI).
The computer tries to boot Ubuntu by default unless something else is selected from the boot menu. How do I change the boot preference from default (choice 0) to WinXP? I tried manually changing this (editing the grub.cfg file), but the file said not to edit, that it's generated by something else...How do I have WinXP load by default instead of the broken Ubuntu?

I never had a dual boot before but I understand that it goes automatically (after a short time) to default Windows if Ubuntu is not chosen (on the boot up screen), correct? If so, if there's a "countdown" of sorts, is there a way to disable it? I wish to have control over that aspect, have unlimited time during that boot "choose one" screen.

Jun 28, 2010I'm trying to configure GRUB to boot XP preferentially- my wife insists. Having looked up the GRUB manual I see that I can set this using the default command.
The problem is, when I go to my grub command line default is not a recognized command. If I hit TAB for a list of commands, it isn't there.
I think I'm using some 0.9x version of GRUB, since the partitions etc seem to be numbered starting at 0, not 1.
While I'm at it, I was just going to play around and figure this out, but: the menu interface lists five versions of Ubuntu (all those weird kernel variations) then XP. So would XP be default 1 or default 5?

Jan 27, 2011I Just updated my 10.04 LTS system, which dual boots Windows XP. Prior to the update the default was to boot to XP, now it is to Memtest.
I tried to edit /etc/default/ grub and make the default be 14 instead of 12, which would be XP, but Ubuntu, (using gedit), refused to accept my change.
I don't have a problem scrolling around to pick XP, or the latest Linux kernel to boot, but my wife sure does. How can I make Ubuntu/Grub default to to XP ?

Apr 19, 2011I recentely installed ubuntu to my second hard disk (on the first i had windows 7 and data), but the hard disk that i installed ubuntu on broke, so i had to trash it. The problem is that i have an external disk reader that is only bootable after i booted at least once into windows. So basically i can't boot using either Windows or Linux disks, nor can i boot into the os itself. When i start the computer i get something like device not fount and a long code, then a prompt shows up (Rescue GRUB). What do i need to type here to remove grub and be able to boot into windows?

Feb 26, 2010I loaded Kubuntu 9.1 and got a mess in the Grub 2 Boot Menu, which I can't correct.
I get extra choices in the Boot menu, and the first few, which are supposedly for Kubuntu Karmic Koala all put me in a shell, which ends in a black screen, then shows up a shell once I hit "enter". Then I just have a "intramfs" (?) prompt.
So I went into Grub2 to change it, and it refuses to do it. All I get is a screen full of error messages every time I try, with no change. Apparently it is looking to access drive sdb8, which is non-existent. I DO have a drive sda8, though.
So with all the wonderfulness of the indirect system to change Grub 2 how am I supposed to set it right? The old Grub worked fine, and just took simple changes to the menu.lst file.
Can't somebody write a program that lets Grub 2 be changed from within the program, rather than all this running around trying to find what file to change, and how to get the change to work?
Just to be clear, here are the errors as they show up when grub-update is flailing around:

Ubuntu :: Change Default Boot OS From To Vista In GRUB
May 25, 2010I'm extreemly new to Ubuntu and installed 10.04 onto a partition this morning. When I boot up my PC a menu called GRUB comes up and the list of OS's has ubuntu 1st. If I dont change my selection to vista it automatically boots into ubuntu. How can I change the order or default booting OS? I have seen other people talk about it but I'm not sure if it's up to date.

May 2, 2011I think my Natty 64 bit install is missing a dependency for gk, even though it shows up install in Synaptic. I have also tried using Start up Manager and the changes I make there don't show up after restarting either. I just want to change the default boot to number 4, Windows. Any suggestions are welcome, but I have tried all the ones I've found on this forum so far and none have worked, including editing etc/grub/default and saving with sudo update-grub. That's when I get a "gk not found" error.

May 2, 2010Old Toshiba laptop model A30 -- tried various installs 8.04/9.04/9.10. They all hung trying to boot the install disks after the initial few screens. Finally, I got 9.10 to install, dual booting XP and 9.10 by choosing F6 from the initial menu, and putting an X beside:
ACPI=off
noapic
nolapc
edd=on
nodmaid
and then hitting escape.But, after the install, I couldn't boot 9.10 from grub as it hangs after about 30 seconds of trying. The live CD would not work without the above parameters being set as described above, but does work with them set! I need those same parameters passed to grub at 9.10 boot time, but I can't figure out how to do that. I've had many successful installs of Ubuntu across a number of desktops and laptops, but I never had to deal with the guts of grub before. It all just worked.

Sep 25, 2010I have a new dell studio 1558 with core i5 processor and 4 gb ram. I just installed ubuntu 10.04 and every time i boot into my windows 7 partition my grub seems to stop working. The only solution i have found so far is to re-install grub using the live cd, but it is not feasible to do that every boot. Is this a standard problem(or is there a solution to this problem)? Also, I havent updated my ubuntu yet, will that help?

Jun 27, 2010I just installed Ubuntu Server 10.04. When I reboot, it stops at a "grub>" prompt. I figured out that I can continue booting by entering these four commants:

initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic-pae

I can't figure out, however, how to save these as the default so that the machine can boot without someone present to enter these commands. Running "grub-set-default" tells me "entry not specified." I don't see anywhere in /etc/default/grub that looks relevant.
How do I save my default grub settings?

Ubuntu Installation :: Triple Boot - Now Have Grub And Grub2 At Same Time
Sep 23, 2010I mucked things up a bit--
1) I had only windows on my drive.
2) Using 10.04 on USB, I made a 10gb ext3 partition and a 1gb swap area and installed 10.04. No problems at all using grub2, and the GUI is nice for dummies like me.
3) I got antsy so I made an 8gb partition and installed 8.04 on it. It automatically installed grub (the old grub).
Now when I boot my machine the Old Grub loads, not Grub2. I can select 8.04, 10.04, or XP no problem. When I select 10.04 and use the GUI I can see 10.04, 8.04, and XP, but things are in a different order (clearly the grub2 order).
Questions:
1) How can I get grub2 to take over booting? (I like the GUI)
2) I'd like to install puppy linux too, but I'm afraid of really screwing things up. Can someone recommend a safe way of installing it (besides just running from a USB- I've had mixed luck using USB OS's over long timeframes).

I have to manually press a key on my keyboard each time to get through this menu. This is a big problem as this is going to be administered remotely. here is my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file

On bootup, I get a brief message stating "GRUB loading" and then the system automatically boots to the generic kernel. No GRUB menu is ever displayed. I would like the option to boot to the real-time kernel, but I have no idea how to edit the appropriate files. I've done a fair amount of reading on the subject, but I find very little information relating directly to the real-time kernel, and so I still feel like I'm too green to do it without messing something up.

Aug 20, 2010I'm not consistently able to boot into Ubuntu Lucid on my new dual boot (w/ Win7) setup. Machine is a Dell XPS 1645 laptop. Usually it takes 1-3 tries of hard shut down and restart before the OS starts up. Boot info script results are below. Windows starts up fine everytime. What I usually get is this: Dell startup screen, then Grub2 menu, then after selecting Linux kernal a blinking cursor at upper left of monitor and it just hangs.
