Ubuntu Installation :: Save The Default Grub Boot Settings?

I just installed Ubuntu Server 10.04. When I reboot, it stops at a "grub>" prompt. I figured out that I can continue booting by entering these four commants:
set root=(hd0,1)
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-21-generic-pae root=/dev/sda1 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic-pae
boot
I can't figure out, however, how to save these as the default so that the machine can boot without someone present to enter these commands. Running "grub-set-default" tells me "entry not specified." I don't see anywhere in /etc/default/grub that looks relevant.
How do I save my default grub settings?

I am a new Ubuntu user, and I am attempting to set Windows 7 64 bit as my default OS in the boot loader instead of Ubuntu 10.10. I have entered the command gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst into terminal, and the menu.lst file does open. However, this file appears to be completely blank, which does not seem to make sense and is preventing me from changing the boot order.

I upgraded my wife's dual boot netbook (Ubuntu/Win7) from 10.10 to 11.4. Windows was set as the default OS in Grub v 1.98 via startupmanager in 10.10 and that's the way I want it to be again. After the 11.4 upgrade, Ubuntu 11.4 is set to defualt and even though I changed the default in startupmanager it always defaults to Ubuntu on boot. It's interesting to note that when I go back in to startupmanager to see what's up after reboot, it still has Win 7 selected.
Also, the choices in startupmanager look a little different from what shows up in grub. Grub shows just the latest version of ubuntu (and recovery mode), the memtest stuff, windows, and "previous versions of ubuntu" while startupmanger just lists all three ubuntu version w/recovery options, memtest stuff, and Win 7. If I do sudo update-grub in terminal, it lists the available options just like startupmanager does.
Bottom line, Win 7 will boot if manually selected, but I can't set it to default, and this is my wife's netbook so she wants it put back I just remembered and I don't know if it would matter or not. I did the original Ubuntu install first, then win 7. I used a windows program called easyBCD to get back the ability to choose which OS on startup. When I upgraded 10.10 to 11.4, Grub is back in charge. If I manually select Win7 to boot in grub, that easyBCD selection menu will pop up for a sec,offereing windows or ubuntu.Could this be confusing startupmanager and not letting my changes take effect?

I loaded Kubuntu 9.1 and got a mess in the Grub 2 Boot Menu, which I can't correct.
I get extra choices in the Boot menu, and the first few, which are supposedly for Kubuntu Karmic Koala all put me in a shell, which ends in a black screen, then shows up a shell once I hit "enter". Then I just have a "intramfs" (?) prompt.
So I went into Grub2 to change it, and it refuses to do it. All I get is a screen full of error messages every time I try, with no change. Apparently it is looking to access drive sdb8, which is non-existent. I DO have a drive sda8, though.
So with all the wonderfulness of the indirect system to change Grub 2 how am I supposed to set it right? The old Grub worked fine, and just took simple changes to the menu.lst file.
Can't somebody write a program that lets Grub 2 be changed from within the program, rather than all this running around trying to find what file to change, and how to get the change to work?
Just to be clear, here are the errors as they show up when grub-update is flailing around:
"error: cannot open '/dev/sdb' while attempting to get disk size

I think my Natty 64 bit install is missing a dependency for gk, even though it shows up install in Synaptic. I have also tried using Start up Manager and the changes I make there don't show up after restarting either. I just want to change the default boot to number 4, Windows. Any suggestions are welcome, but I have tried all the ones I've found on this forum so far and none have worked, including editing etc/grub/default and saving with sudo update-grub. That's when I get a "gk not found" error.

I'm on a 64-bit machine running Debian 8.2 "Jessie" with MATE Desktop Environment.
I have a Geforce GTX 650ti video card.
I'm logged in as a non-superuser account named "john."
I open NVIDIA X Server Settings GUI, change my monitors' brightness from 0.000 to -0.1, go to the "nvidia-settings Configuration" section, click "Save Current Configuration" and click "Quit."
But when I reboot, the brightness is back at 0.000.

I just got to finish installing ubuntu lastest version on my new netbook, im really exited about how powerful it can get. The thing is, I'm still keeping my old Windows 7 partition and data, and I want to access it faster, editing the grub options, to change the timer on it, and the default booting option.

I know it is possible to boot Ubuntu Live from a Flash drive. But it just boots up and runs like its a CD. When you shut down the computer, the changes are all lost.
Is there any way to use the flash drive as a Hard Drive? like install Ubuntu on the flash drive and have the flash drive act as a hard drive - so that if I boot with the flash drive in the computer I can boot of of the flash drive and it would act as a hard drive?
Could I just setup Ubuntu and select the flash drive as the install directory? would that accomplish this?

I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 dual-booted on my machine. grub was aautomaticlu installed as the primary loader. Soon i want to nuke my ubuntu partition but i know that will delete grub. Can i remove grub or at least make Windows boot loader default.

i am trying to install ubuntu 9.04 on quite a few computers. all the computers need the same applications that i already have, as well as settings such as panel shortcuts and color schemes. there are no files like music or pictures, just applications already installed. i have all this on a bootable flash drive. all settings are saved. if i install from the flash drive will the settings transfer to the computer i am installing it on? if not, is there another way to copy all settings and apps or do i have to manually install everything on each computer?

I am looking for a program to save accounts and settings of thunderbird to a flash drive. For I want to reload windows and ubuntu, due to slowness of opening up files. I found MozBackup utility works but it is for windows.
Is there something similar for ubuntu? Tried to find it in synapse under morzilla and thunderbird.

I have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. I have several Ubuntu OS, but I always install 9.04 last so that I can get Grub Legacy which works better with my Windows 7 64 bit than Grub 2. I wish to edit and save /boot/grub/menu.lst on the 9.04 OS. When I attempt to do this I get an error stating that I do not have the permissions necessary to do so. How may I obtain the permission?

I tried to do my parents a favor by installing Ubuntu 9.10 alongside WinXP on their PC -- same configuration I have on my desktop at home. The install went fine, but since I made a poor buying decision on purchasing a MSI motherboard in the past, Ubuntu immediately crashes after boot (other MSI board users having the same issue, no help from MSI).
The computer tries to boot Ubuntu by default unless something else is selected from the boot menu. How do I change the boot preference from default (choice 0) to WinXP? I tried manually changing this (editing the grub.cfg file), but the file said not to edit, that it's generated by something else...How do I have WinXP load by default instead of the broken Ubuntu?

I'm trying to configure GRUB to boot XP preferentially- my wife insists. Having looked up the GRUB manual I see that I can set this using the default command.
The problem is, when I go to my grub command line default is not a recognized command. If I hit TAB for a list of commands, it isn't there.
I think I'm using some 0.9x version of GRUB, since the partitions etc seem to be numbered starting at 0, not 1.
While I'm at it, I was just going to play around and figure this out, but: the menu interface lists five versions of Ubuntu (all those weird kernel variations) then XP. So would XP be default 1 or default 5?

I Just updated my 10.04 LTS system, which dual boots Windows XP. Prior to the update the default was to boot to XP, now it is to Memtest.
I tried to edit /etc/default/ grub and make the default be 14 instead of 12, which would be XP, but Ubuntu, (using gedit), refused to accept my change.
I don't have a problem scrolling around to pick XP, or the latest Linux kernel to boot, but my wife sure does. How can I make Ubuntu/Grub default to to XP ?

Is there some workaround by changing grub settings other than rewiring the hard disks or changing in bios..
1. my bios is getting reset (low battery)
2. my hard disks are sata and ide, so the ide one is loaded as hd1 by default, cudn't find any way to change that..

I had a minor problem with my ubuntu install, and a person said to go to startup manager and select reset to original settings. I did this and when I restarted It asked me to boot ubuntu 9.10, which would not work as I upgraded long ago. Now all I get is the option to boot 9.10, and I really want to get back into my computer. Running ubuntu 10.04 with latest updates as if 25 september New Zealand Time.

I'm extreemly new to Ubuntu and installed 10.04 onto a partition this morning. When I boot up my PC a menu called GRUB comes up and the list of OS's has ubuntu 1st. If I dont change my selection to vista it automatically boots into ubuntu. How can I change the order or default booting OS? I have seen other people talk about it but I'm not sure if it's up to date.

I am currently doing a tri-boot (using refit) with Linux, Windows, and OS X. I was wondering if it was possible to change up the boot loader for Linux. I basically wanted grub to not pop-up and just boot the default version of Ubuntu. Also the boot loader comes up with the options to boot Windows and OS X and I was wondering if it would be possible to remove those from the list as well?

A recent kernel upgrade broke nvidia and the network card. I figured out how to get the grub boot menu, but am having trouble figuring out how to set the default kernel to boot. I believe there used to be a file called /boot/grub/menu.lst that one could edit, but it doesn't appear to exist now.

I was fed up installing Fedora on many of my friend's laptop and doing the same and same thing again. So I've made a Fedora post installation script which does all I want to. Currently the script can:
Add user to sudoers
Configure yum to keep package cache
Fix a problem with Revisor
Add additional repos
Install multimedia codecs
Install flash(32-bit only)
Install wine with gecko,
Install GTalk plugin
Add colors to bash prompt
Add fortune messages to bash prompt
Set SELinux in permissive mode
Install additional softwares
By default, when you run the script, it will ask if you want to accept default configuration or use customize the changes. You can also run ./fedora-firstrun.sh -y to run the script with default configuration. To add yourself to sudoers, run the script as normal user. If you are not in sudoers list, the script will ask you to add to sudoers.

I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid recently. Before upgrading, I had customized my desktop on Karmic with Compiz, Emerald and new set of fonts. After upgrade (which appears to have gone smoothly, yay!), my desktop retained the previous appearance settings. I want to try the factory default gnome appearance settings for Lucid and still stuck with restoring fonts.
What I have done till now:
0. Enabled Visual Effects from Appearance menu.
1. Theme -> Changed to Human
2. Window Manager -> Still using Compiz
3. Window Decorator -> Switched from Emerald to GTK
4. Font -> Changed first 3 font types in the Font tab to Sans, size 10, 4th to Sans Bold and 5th to Monochrome. Rendering -> subpixel smoothing (LCD)
What I want:
1. Is this the default setting? Have I missed anything in restoring default settings?
2. I have done too many changes to firefox font rendering over time. How do I restore default 10.04 font settings for Firefox? I would ideally love to have an option in Ubuntu which would help me restore factory settings.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 64 Bit, and I also have Windows 7, and I want to make Win7 boot first and without having to manually choose it every time I restart, for my non-linux using family. I have tried the guides where it says you have to edit the "menu.lfg(or whatever it is)" and I don't have that file. I have looked, it's not there, the closest I found was "grub.cfg" and I can't make any sense out of it. I'm not unfamiliar with computers, I'm just relatively new to Ubuntu, and want to make the best out of it I can, I love it. I've tried going into GRUB, and and editing the Win7 Loader, but it doesn't work.
