A recent kernel upgrade broke nvidia and the network card. I figured out how to get the grub boot menu, but am having trouble figuring out how to set the default kernel to boot. I believe there used to be a file called /boot/grub/menu.lst that one could edit, but it doesn't appear to exist now.

I dual-boot my machine and I want it to default to boot into windows so that whenever I restart the machine remotely from my home it will be able to get back into Windows (instead of Ubuntu).
The problem is that every time Ubuntu upgrades the kernel, I have to reset the default boot item of grub back to windows. This is because the grub menu loader uses positions i.e. 6 for default OS to boot. And when Ubuntu installs a new kernel it changes that order.
I am looking for a way to configure grub to remember its default boot item under kernel updates.

I have Lucid on my laptop. Unfortunately, with the various 2.6.32 kernels neither hibernate nor suspend work, so I've installed and use the last 2.6.31 kernel that came with Karmic.Now, I'd like to set it as default, so that I don't need to actively choose it when I boot. The problem is that I can't find a way to set Grub (version 2.0, or 1.96rc, can't remember) to pick the 2.6.31 kernel and if I try to uninstall the 2.6.32-23 kernel synaptic says that linux-generic and linux-headers will also be uninstalled (not just the parts specific to 2.6.32-23).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Squeeze. I noticed there are 2 main kernels installed. One first one at the top is 2.6.32-trunk-686 and the other is 2.6.32-3-686. At the time, I did not know or think much about it. Now when I try to get linux headers to compile drivers, I am not finding them. I also read some problems with trunk kernels.
How can I assign the 2.6.32-3-686 kernel to be the default in grub? Is it OK to use it as the main kernel?
Do I need to upgrade the trunk kernel to rid of trunk or just don't use it?
I tried to do my parents a favor by installing Ubuntu 9.10 alongside WinXP on their PC -- same configuration I have on my desktop at home. The install went fine, but since I made a poor buying decision on purchasing a MSI motherboard in the past, Ubuntu immediately crashes after boot (other MSI board users having the same issue, no help from MSI).
The computer tries to boot Ubuntu by default unless something else is selected from the boot menu. How do I change the boot preference from default (choice 0) to WinXP? I tried manually changing this (editing the grub.cfg file), but the file said not to edit, that it's generated by something else...How do I have WinXP load by default instead of the broken Ubuntu?
I am currently using Ubuntu Lucid on my desktop (stats are in my signature). I have an older computer, with an Intel i8xx chipset as my graphics card. This has had some instabilities on the previous two Ubuntu releases for me (10.04 and 9.10) which I am hoping will be fixed for Maverick, but thankfully the Ubuntu Wiki managed to provide me with fixes.
After much tweaking and some luck, I was able to get Ubuntu to work without constantly crashing on kernel versions 2.6.32-21, 2.6.32-22 and 2.6.32-23. Unfortunately, when 2.6.32-24 and 2.6.32-25 came out, I was unable to cease the crashes.
While I am still looking into tweaking the latest kernel version to work perfectly, I would like to know if there was a way for Ubuntu to default boot into a kernel other than the latest. This is because I want to run 2.6.32-23 by default (the latest kernel that I have tweaked properly) until I can configure 2.6.32-24 and 2.6.32-25 as well. I have less computer-savvy family members that use my desktop as well, and it would be a pain for them to have to press shift at every boot and have to select the correct kernel.
I'm trying to configure GRUB to boot XP preferentially- my wife insists. Having looked up the GRUB manual I see that I can set this using the default command.
The problem is, when I go to my grub command line default is not a recognized command. If I hit TAB for a list of commands, it isn't there.
I think I'm using some 0.9x version of GRUB, since the partitions etc seem to be numbered starting at 0, not 1.
While I'm at it, I was just going to play around and figure this out, but: the menu interface lists five versions of Ubuntu (all those weird kernel variations) then XP. So would XP be default 1 or default 5?
I Just updated my 10.04 LTS system, which dual boots Windows XP. Prior to the update the default was to boot to XP, now it is to Memtest.
I tried to edit /etc/default/ grub and make the default be 14 instead of 12, which would be XP, but Ubuntu, (using gedit), refused to accept my change.
I don't have a problem scrolling around to pick XP, or the latest Linux kernel to boot, but my wife sure does. How can I make Ubuntu/Grub default to to XP ?
I loaded Kubuntu 9.1 and got a mess in the Grub 2 Boot Menu, which I can't correct.
I get extra choices in the Boot menu, and the first few, which are supposedly for Kubuntu Karmic Koala all put me in a shell, which ends in a black screen, then shows up a shell once I hit "enter". Then I just have a "intramfs" (?) prompt.
So I went into Grub2 to change it, and it refuses to do it. All I get is a screen full of error messages every time I try, with no change. Apparently it is looking to access drive sdb8, which is non-existent. I DO have a drive sda8, though.
So with all the wonderfulness of the indirect system to change Grub 2 how am I supposed to set it right? The old Grub worked fine, and just took simple changes to the menu.lst file.
Can't somebody write a program that lets Grub 2 be changed from within the program, rather than all this running around trying to find what file to change, and how to get the change to work?

I'm extreemly new to Ubuntu and installed 10.04 onto a partition this morning. When I boot up my PC a menu called GRUB comes up and the list of OS's has ubuntu 1st. If I dont change my selection to vista it automatically boots into ubuntu. How can I change the order or default booting OS? I have seen other people talk about it but I'm not sure if it's up to date.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI think my Natty 64 bit install is missing a dependency for gk, even though it shows up install in Synaptic. I have also tried using Start up Manager and the changes I make there don't show up after restarting either. I just want to change the default boot to number 4, Windows. Any suggestions are welcome, but I have tried all the ones I've found on this forum so far and none have worked, including editing etc/grub/default and saving with sudo update-grub. That's when I get a "gk not found" error.

initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic-pae

I can't figure out, however, how to save these as the default so that the machine can boot without someone present to enter these commands. Running "grub-set-default" tells me "entry not specified." I don't see anywhere in /etc/default/grub that looks relevant.
How do I save my default grub settings?
I just got to finish installing ubuntu lastest version on my new netbook, im really exited about how powerful it can get. The thing is, I'm still keeping my old Windows 7 partition and data, and I want to access it faster, editing the grub options, to change the timer on it, and the default booting option.

I have tried the guides where it says you have to edit the "menu.lfg(or whatever it is)" and I don't have that file. I have looked, it's not there, the closest I found was "grub.cfg" and I can't make any sense out of it. I'm not unfamiliar with computers, I'm just relatively new to Ubuntu, and want to make the best out of it I can, I love it. after upgrading to lucid lynx ubuntu doesn't boot with the new kernels 2.6.32-22-generic and 2.6.32-23-generic (also in recovery mode). But it's does boot with the previous 2.6.31-21-generic kernel. At the time i was hoping to wait it out, but a new kernel has come and the problem persisted. I've been trying to find a solution for this but somehow, amid lots of failed boot blank black screen threads, i didn't relate to any solution. The boot seems to go well until a pixelated logo appears (before the login screen), then goes to a blank black screen and there it stays stuck with no remedy. Looking into dmesg logs - albeit some differences between 2.6.31-21 and the newer 2.6.32-23 - the failed boot seems proper in both logs. In Xorg logs the differences are bigger but i cannot pinpoint a source for this problem.

I have entered the command gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst into terminal, and the menu.lst file does open. View 2 Replies View RelatedI couldn't get 10.10 to boot (live or after install). I was able to install and boot 9.10 normally. Then I ran upgrade to 10.10 and I started getting the same problem trying to boot as with 10.10 disk. I found I could boot with 2.6.32 left from 9.10 but it will not boot 9.6.35 kernels. On a normal restart when automatically trying to boot the latest 9.6.35, I get this message before switching to an unresponsive black screen with no further hard drive activity:

I have been searching for a solution and so far have not found anything that worked. I'm a pretty basic user so I'm not sure what is going on.
I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from earlier versions. I have a dual boot system with Windows 7. Grub was set to boot Windows by default Things were working fine. I decided to upgrade to Grub2. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Now when booting up,the name at the top of the Grub menu is 1.98, which is Grub 2. When I run grub-install -v, it comes back grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97) which is not Grub2. Now when I boot up, Ubuntu 10.04 is the default. I have to manually choose Windows if I want to use that system. I have been unable to change the boot order following instructions from this site. Any Way changing the boot order to make Windows 7 the default. I am using a Toshiba Satellite.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm remote from my system and so have to wait 2-3 days before I can get access directly, but I've noticed that when the kernel updates automatically (or forced by me), the next reboot stops at the grub page awaiting confirmation of the kernel I want to boot. grub.conf doesnt seem significantly different from that of fedora (my previos distro for this machine) and even has the default lines and times spec'd, so I can't see what's holding it up. Any ideas how I can prevent this so I can have my system auto-updating the kernel AND safe to reboot remotely?
