Ubuntu :: Get Desktop Launchers Back?

And can I get them back?
I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and this is my first experience with Unity. I have managed to create launchers in .local/share/applications and drag them to the launcher to add desired shortcuts. Here are two questions I have:
1) I am adding many shortcuts to various directories I frequently use; the shortcut's have commands like nautilus /home/user/some/dir. Despite the fact that I change their icons, when I drag them to the launcher they all use the Nautilus icon. Is there a way to fix this?
2) Is there a way to group the launchers? For example, having a group for office applications, and a group for directory launchers?
OS: LucidSymptoms: Launchers are in Desktop folder, but they are not on the desktop. Also, when I "right click" on desktop, nothing happens (no pop up menus). Attempts to add new launchers to desktop (via "add launcher to desktop" or "click-n-drag") are notsuccessful.Symptoms the same on both monitors.Possible Cause: I just completed a problematic install of 2nd monitor (NVidia X Server). Currently running in TwinView. After install was completed I noticed launchers were missing.Info: Desktop folder is owned (RW) & group (R) to my user, execute is enabled, and Others is R, as are all files in folder.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThere must be something turned on in the security settings keeping Desktop Launchers from working.I have verified that the launchers have execute bit turned on in the permissions, yet when try to start one, I get an alert window saying this is an Untrusted application launcher. How do I disable this feature, or in the alternative, make them trusted?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have made some custom launchers on my Xfce panel and was wondering where their .desktop file was located. I checked /usr/share/applications but they were not there.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have added an application launcher to my desktop and it works fine. However, I want to be able to feed parameters to the launcher before I launch the application. So, for instance, if the command is normally "/usr/bin/foo something" I want to be able to add the "something" parameter dynamically after clicking the launcher but before the application launches. Is this possible in Fedora?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a dual screen setup with one card NVidia 8400GS.
Both screen are identical 22" LCD LG W2246 Monitors.
I have Dual X-Display setup.
I am using Gnome Desktop.
The left hand screen displays everything, menus, panels, background and of course desktop launchers.
The right hand screen displays everything except the desktop launchers.
If I create a new launcher on the left it appears on the left desktop when created.
If I create a new launcher on the right it appears on the left and can not be dragged over to the right screen.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running openSUSE 11.1 + KDE 4.2.I wonder where is the desktop button, which minimized all currently opened applications and brings you back to the desktop?
Please could someone let me know how or what do I need to insert to the control panel?
I loved Ubuntu up to 10.10. Then I installed Natty, and "Shades of Vista!!!" I thought I had escaped Microsoft clutter and "user friendliness" which put up all sorts of barriers to doing what I want to do.
Now it feels like I'm back in Vista. But even Vista allows the option of the "Classic View" menu.
Does Natty have an equivalent option of a classic view menu -- something a little more like 10.10?
was the owner of 10.10 and i like the old interface. how to get it back? its a whole new installtion.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI can see I don't need MS windows. I did already crash my computer twice, not Linux's or Ubuntu's fault. I guess I'm having fun. But here's the question I was trying to setup the desktop like a server just a home network and used tasksel to add things turned my desktop Ubuntu into Xubuntu, and my laptop into Mutter. I was able to get Ubuntu fixed on the desktop but not the laptop. I know I can start from scratch and reinstall it,I think But and I just go back to the Ubuntu desktop by reloading something?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been using Debian desktop environment for years. There, I can sudo init 1; do maintenance; exit to desktop environment again. But when I `resume' from Ubuntu-10.10's maintenance mode, I can just Ctrl-Alt-F1 to login and there seems not an interesting process running.

View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning Centos and the desktop was hanging. I did a little (clearly not enough) research and hit ctrl - alt - f7 which brought me to a black screen with a blinking curser in the upper left corner. Got out of that by ctrl - alt - f1 which put me in a terminal session but I really want to get back to the GUI desktop.
Startx gives me "-bash: startx: command not found"
Im logged in as root.
I have a problem and I don't understand how it started...
When I minimize windows, they disappear beyond my desktop not leaving the button to maximize them again on the lower panel...
I have no idea how to get the minimized windows to be stored on the lower panel...
How can i fix this problem?

View 8 Replies View RelatedToday I installed Xubuntu desktop on my normal Ubuntu, to see what it's like, and to have the option to run a more minimal desktop when I want.
My only problem is that my login screen loads with the Xubuntu theme. This wouldn't be a problem except it makes it take significantly longer to boot into Ubuntu (Gnome).
How can I change it back so that Gnome is the default, and XFCE only gets loaded if I pick it at login?
what are my options with customizing Gnome at the login screen?
I am going to upgrade from debian 5.0 to 6.0 today. I have backedup my home directory by copying it to a external harddrive. There is no other files placed anywhere except for the home directory. Is there anything else i should upgrade that everyone does? Like back up the programs i have installed?
the OS has a partition size of 20GB and the home directory has 9GB of that.
Few Days back I have installed a MTS Data Boardband Card in my Suse Linux Server 11.0 Since Then When ever I try loggin using the ROOT A/c The screen with Blue Background and the movable mouse is appearing and the desktop is not showned to me due to which i am not able to get the GUI Mode (My Desktop).
Also once I created a New user in my SUSE LINUX SERVER using that A/c I am getting the GUI Desktop but in root i am not able to get it.
It looks like there is some service which is not getting started and my Root desktop get freezed.
I recently tried out the awm version of the desktop environment. When I switched back to the Gnome desktop, I found a couple of titlebar-like artifacts left on the desktop.I did some experimenting, using System Monitor and the Kill xxxx command and managed to rid myself of one of the artifacts. The remaining artifact can be taken care of by using kill xxxx comand for the gtk-window-decorator but, this basically renders window buttons useless after the command is issued.
I think I had a couple applications running at startup in Gnome desktop before I switched to awm, and they didn't start at startup when I returned to Gnome desktop, but the titlebar-like artifacts did.Is there a way to reset the state of the gtk-window-decorator in a manner that is less destructive, and which allows my desktop to be clear of this artifact?
I am having this weird problem when I turn off my PC and then when its turned back on there are items on the desktop that were not there before (they had been previously but been moved to another folder). Also partitions that I dont want to mount are suddenly mounted and I have to umount as root. I think I have some problems in my grub2 installation since installing 10.10. I ran the boot info script, and can see that there are problems but I get nervous messing with grub
