View 8 Replies View RelatedToday I installed Xubuntu desktop on my normal Ubuntu, to see what it's like, and to have the option to run a more minimal desktop when I want.
My only problem is that my login screen loads with the Xubuntu theme. This wouldn't be a problem except it makes it take significantly longer to boot into Ubuntu (Gnome).
How can I change it back so that Gnome is the default, and XFCE only gets loaded if I pick it at login?
what are my options with customizing Gnome at the login screen?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently tried out the awm version of the desktop environment. When I switched back to the Gnome desktop, I found a couple of titlebar-like artifacts left on the desktop.I did some experimenting, using System Monitor and the Kill xxxx command and managed to rid myself of one of the artifacts. The remaining artifact can be taken care of by using kill xxxx comand for the gtk-window-decorator but, this basically renders window buttons useless after the command is issued.
I think I had a couple applications running at startup in Gnome desktop before I switched to awm, and they didn't start at startup when I returned to Gnome desktop, but the titlebar-like artifacts did.Is there a way to reset the state of the gtk-window-decorator in a manner that is less destructive, and which allows my desktop to be clear of this artifact?
I just downloaded Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 and am running it from a usb flash drive on my Acer laptop.
At times I'd like to use the Gnome desktop. I know with the previous version there was a way to change to Gnome. Is there still a way to change to Gnome on the 10.04 version and if so how do I change to Gnome and back to Netbook Edition desktop?
I have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.

I just set up a new PC with a copy of 10.04.2 from the disk that came with "The official Umbuntu book" This morning it prompted me to run updates so I did; now I cannot get back to the desktop invironment. Tried F7, but it stops at "checking battery state."
View 1 Replies View RelatedI hate using Software Center. I can't pick more than one program to install at one time. It downloads only one program at a time. The downloads take longer. I'm not able to look at all available programs at once. It doesn't categorise the programs on the sidebar, but instead you have to use another icon window. Gnome-app-install was just easer to use. Anyone else feel this way?
Following lines taken from other replies in this post to make it easier to do:
-You can install gnome-app-install from this ppa repo.
-Update the repository (including the new PPA):
sudo apt-get update
-Install the gnome application installer:
sudo apt-get install gnome-app-install
-Run the gnome application installer:
gnome-app-install
I am having this weird problem when I turn off my PC and then when its turned back on there are items on the desktop that were not there before (they had been previously but been moved to another folder). Also partitions that I dont want to mount are suddenly mounted and I have to umount as root. I think I have some problems in my grub2 installation since installing 10.10. I ran the boot info script, and can see that there are problems but I get nervous messing with grub

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had a request from one of my colleague that he would like to try my Fedora 12 installation which was set up recently. However, he said he would like to start with the KDE Desktop while my normal login uses the Gnome. Is it possible to have different desktops for different users (well I believe so)? If yes, I would be appreciated if some one will provide me guidance in doing so as I am quite new to Linux.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having this problem with Ubuntu 9.10, it has happened the three times I have tried to install it.
I have made a video showing the problem: [url]
After upgrading and rebooting, the flashing login screen appears and it is not possible to use the GDM.
I have tried to install KDM and it works, but when trying to load gnome I get the blinking bars again.
I have also tried this (and got the same problem); installing the Nvidia driver (manufacturer), installing the Nvidia driver (repositories) and installing no screen driver.
I think the problem is with GNOME, and not with the graphics card.
Now I have installed windows xp :-/, for the first time in a whole year, cause it is not possible for me to use Ubuntu 9.10 at all.
I install ubuntu server 11.04 I select ubuntu server from boot menu then enter username and password and then i see a command line line and a black background How i can setup a graphical app (some thing like genome) for my server I do not know any thing Any body can explain all step of this for me how I connect to internet how download graphical app and install it? BUG HISTORY: Googling on this problem reveals that it has been around since at least Ubuntu 8.10.
I'll be working away and all of a sudden the entire desktop blows off the screen and is replaced with a console stuck in a loop. The last message I always see in the console is "Checking battery state", then the endless looping begins.
The only way out is CTRL+ALT+SYSRQ+K (kills Xserver, I think) followed by CTRL+ALT+SYSRQ+B (reboots system).
NOTE: If I attempt to restart Xserver, Ubuntu goes into an endless console loop with the same "Checking battery state" message. Does that help anyone figure out what's going on?
I have tried to remove any laptop program that manages power and they uninstall ubuntu-desktop. What gives with Ubuntu's GNOME being dependent on laptop utilities? I'm running a desktop and have no need of laptop utilities.
I have gone to the extreme of starting Ubuntu in Recovery Mode, dropping to a root shell with networking, then removing GNOME and Xserver completely and re-installing them both. The problem STILL occurs.
I have used the following commands to accomplish this:
This problem has made Ubuntu extremely unreliable, as it can crash at any time and DOES... MANY TIMES in a day!
I have upgraded my EeePC from 9.10 to 10.04 and got now a black screen after I can login. On the right upper corner, I find an error message:
Quote:
Install problem! The cnfiguration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. On the bottom bar I selected English / USA / GNOME for Language / Keyboard and Session Above is the best I ever could come, but most of the time I only can type in the password, and it stops there, without bottom bar (language/keyboard/session), but with the Error.
I successfully installed fedora live CD KDE version on virtual PC. but I can't install the live CD Gnome desktop version. details: I just add vga=0x32D on boot, no problem booting after that. I am now log-in as live user, but I can't find the shotcut for installation on desktop "install to hard drive" but using the terminal, there's a file under Desktop, 'liveinst.desktop" I tried running it, graphical installation will appear, but during copying to hard disk, it says bad media.

I have the os set to boot to run level 3 then after I login I run telinit 5 to get to X11-Gnome desktop. However, when I boot the xeon machine I am able to login and run shell commands, such as yum update, fdisk -l etc. But when I try to telinit 5 the process hangs, hitting the power button, the machine goes through it's shutdown script.
I haven't tried transplanting the drive back into the original machine. just to test it's integrity, but I suspect it not corrupted. Not sure this matters, but running it's nvidia's driver for the video card. I think I can also boot to nouveau, but not 100 % sure with out having to deinstall the nvidia binary. both boxes uses the same video card a nvidia 8800 gtfwiw, I can boot my i386 f14 usb thumb drives that have the generic video driver installed.
Have just upgraded (14-->15) using the dvd option; installed the nvidia driver (I think) and am able to startx and get to the Gnome 3 desktop (Wallpaper and top "task" bar look correct)..But, the mouse and keyboard have absolutely no affect. No matter what I click on, or what keyboard combination I use, nothing happens..(Have spent the last 3 hours researching it; and just seem to be getting nowhere.. I can do anything I need to from the CLI; but am not sure what to do..
