Ubuntu :: How To Remove Gnome 3 Or Try To Get Back To Unity Desktop

Apr 30, 2011

Running Ubuntu 11.04 and installed Gnome3 upgrade. Messed things up big time. Ubuntu will load, but will shut down when I try to access almost anything but terminal. How can I remove Gnome 3 or try to get back to Unity desktop or whatever.

Ubuntu :: Reset Gnome Desktop To Default Without Affecting Unity Desktop?

May 27, 2011

I have my Unity desktop just how I like it, but sometimes I like to log in to the Gnome (Ubuntu Classic) desktop. However, I was playing around with CCSM while in Gnome and I've totally messed it up, I have the Gnome panels and also the Unity launcher, it's a total mess. Is there a way to reset my Gnome desktop to default without affecting my Unity desktop?

Ubuntu :: Create A Dvd That Contains Server Desktop And Alternate Install Opptions - And All Four Main Desktop Environments (gnome - Kde - Xfce - Lxde) And Unity?

Aug 12, 2011

is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Ubuntu :: New 11.04 Xfce Desktop - Not Unity Or Gnome 3?

May 31, 2011

Right now I am running 11.04, 10.04, 10.10. and I am using Unity, Gnome 2.32, and Xfce DE. Since 11.04 came out I have tried it with Unity, Gnome 3, Gnome 2.32 and Now Xfce. I have two internal hard drives and one USB hard drive that I use for testing. The two internal hd are running 10.10 and gnome 2.32 and the other running 11.04 and Unity. The USB hd now has 11.04 and Xfce.

After trying 11.04 with Unity and 11.04 with Gnome 3, I find them both designed wrong. They are very clumsy to use. (To many mouse movements and clicks) To many things need to be open and to many things to search for. I spend more time trying to do simple things that use to take me seconds to do in gnome 2.32.

Now that Gnome 3 is out, I believe gnome 2.32 is going away so I am looking for other avenues to go in. I have tried fedora and suse, but don't like the RPM's and there package manager. A few years ago I tried Xfce but liked gnome better.

This morning I decided to install it on a USB drive and give it a test drive. I find I really like it because I do things in seconds again. Things are easy to find and there is some things that are a lot like gnome 2.32. And one of the biggest things I like is it is so customisable. Also it boots very fast even from a USB drive. I believe I will be going to it as my main DE. I always liked Ubutnu and have use it since 2005 so I am glad I can stay with it even though I do not like or plan to use Unity or Gnome 3 in the future. This doesn't mean I will not change my mind, but as of now I do not like either one. Let see what will happen with the 11.10 release. Here are a few screen shots of 11.04 and Xfce.

Ubuntu :: Changing Default Desktop Back To Gnome?

Jun 7, 2011

Today I installed Xubuntu desktop on my normal Ubuntu, to see what it's like, and to have the option to run a more minimal desktop when I want.

My only problem is that my login screen loads with the Xubuntu theme. This wouldn't be a problem except it makes it take significantly longer to boot into Ubuntu (Gnome).

How can I change it back so that Gnome is the default, and XFCE only gets loaded if I pick it at login?

what are my options with customizing Gnome at the login screen?

Ubuntu :: Artifacts Left On Desktop After Switching To Awm Then Back To Gnome

Aug 13, 2010

I recently tried out the awm version of the desktop environment. When I switched back to the Gnome desktop, I found a couple of titlebar-like artifacts left on the desktop.I did some experimenting, using System Monitor and the Kill xxxx command and managed to rid myself of one of the artifacts. The remaining artifact can be taken care of by using kill xxxx comand for the gtk-window-decorator but, this basically renders window buttons useless after the command is issued.

I think I had a couple applications running at startup in Gnome desktop before I switched to awm, and they didn't start at startup when I returned to Gnome desktop, but the titlebar-like artifacts did.Is there a way to reset the state of the gtk-window-decorator in a manner that is less destructive, and which allows my desktop to be clear of this artifact?

OpenSUSE :: Change Gnome Desktop Icons Back To Previous Settings?

Jan 15, 2011

I have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.

Ubuntu :: Unity Has Disappeared / Get It Back?

May 31, 2011

When logging in, I suddenly got a message saying "It appears you do not have the hardware to run Unity", and it initialized the old GNOME 2 desktop.

Ofcourse I have the hardware to run Unity (an NVIDIA GTX 580), and it has worked normally until now...

Now Unity won't come back, even after logging out / in or rebooting. The video driver works normally and NVIDIA X Server Settings does not show that there's anything wrong with my video card or drivers.

Is this a bug? Did this happen to anyone else? How do I get the Unity desktop back?

Ubuntu :: Gnome 3 Vs Gnome Shell Vs Unity?

Apr 28, 2011

Please excuse my ignorance, but I need to get it straight. I've been reading and trying to find out more about these three new desktop environments, but still am rather confused. I have had Unity on my netbook for a couple of months now and know it inside out (more or less by now). The problem is: what is the main difference between Gnome 3 and Gnome Shell?

To my understanding Gnome 3 will be a continuation of the panelled Gnome we are so used to? But then I read the panels will be gone forever, so I'm confused again Gnome Shell is somewhat similar-looking to Unity, but I haven't had a chance to try it properly yet.

Ubuntu :: U11.04 Unity Panel Icons Missing / Get Them Back?

May 5, 2011

After playing around with Ubuntu Tweaks to remove the "Recent Documents" logging, I somehow ended up losing the icons for "Applications" and "Files & Folders".

I tried lots of different things but the only thing that seemed to sort it was this:

Log out. Log in under Ubuntu Classic (for some reason dropping back to tty with Ctr, Alt and F2 didn't do it). Bring up the terminal and do code...

Log back into Ubuntu (not classic) and hopefully, you should end up with all icons back as they were.

This worked for me but I can't remember if I'd gotten rid of the ".recent-documents.xbel" file in my home folder first, so if all else fails you could try that before you start removing and re-installing Unity.

Ubuntu :: Getting Unity Back After Video Card Change

Aug 4, 2011

I have an Asus/Intel setup with integrated graphics that has been running Unity no problem for a while. I temporarily installed a separate NVidia card to do some hardware compatibility testing for another system that apparently couldn't hack it for Unity and forced it back to Classic. With the Nvidia card removed and going back to the integrated video setup I can't seem to get Unity running again. At the login I've toggled back and forth between Ubuntu (Unity) and Classic to no avail. Is there some way to reactivate it?
