Debian :: Back Up Before Upgrade On Desktop?
Mar 27, 2011
I am going to upgrade from debian 5.0 to 6.0 today. I have backedup my home directory by copying it to a external harddrive. There is no other files placed anywhere except for the home directory. Is there anything else i should upgrade that everyone does? Like back up the programs i have installed?
the OS has a partition size of 20GB and the home directory has 9GB of that.

I just upgraded to 11.04, and it put in this frigging windows 7 looking launcher instead of my nice neat "start' menu. I can't find anything, and it forced an upgrade to that piece of *&()&^( interface that is firefox 4. get my nice functional desktop back instead of this launcher crap?when they change something without warning that it will work differently.

Running Debian Stable AMD-64
Attempting to install valgrind from Synaptic Package Manager, I get a set of error messages: Packages held back? Broken? etc.
apt-get update; apt-get upgrade report 0 packages held back.
Synaptic Package Manager, clicking on "broken" lists no broken packages.

Desktop lost (Cinnamon 2.2.16 for me) after a recent dist-upgrade in Sid. I'm new to Sid, so is this normal?
Here's what happened:
Code: Select allsudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Code: Select allCalculating upgrade... The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
x11-apps x11-session-utils xinit
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
Done
[Code] ....
I also have run
Code: Select allsudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get install task-cinnamon-desktop
but it says something to the effect that task-cinnamon-desktop has been moved out of incoming, and that it's unable to install since I have held broken packages.

I'm running Wheezy and just did an apt-get upgrade which installed linux-3.2.0-4-amd64, a bunch of php5 stuff and some qemu stuff. Now when I log into the desktop it starts loading and before it finishes I wind up with a screen full of text. The first line is usually "BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at <some address that varies>" but sometimes the first line is off the screen. None of KDE, Gnome or xfce work. Recovery mode to a shell prompt works fine. I did a net install of Wheezy on another disk and that runs just fine. I'd like to get my original disk working.

I'm running 10.04 and for several days now I get two packages that are grayed out and do not upgrade in upgrade-manager.
If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager
The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.

I've just upgraded to Squeeze from Lenny using the instructions found here URL... After completing the upgrade and re-booting the system informed me that "gnome.desktop is not installed" and throws me into XFCE. Googling suggested trying apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment which I did. On reboot I no longer get the "gnome-desktop is not installed", but the login still throws me into XFCE.How do I get my gnome desktop back?

Yesterday I upgraded the system with:
Code: Select allaptitude full-upgrade
And today when I booted it up again I found the desktop didn't work anymore. There's nothing on the desktop but the wallpaper, all icons have disappeared and I can't click or select anything. The top and bottom panels still work though. This is the list of packages I installed and upgraded according to /var/log/apt/history.log are:
Code: Select allgstreamer1.0-libav:amd64 (1.4.4-2, automatic)
bind9-host:amd64 (9.9.5.dfsg-9, 9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u2),
liblwres90:amd64 (9.9.5.dfsg-9, 9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u2),
libfontembed1:amd64 (1.0.61-5, 1.0.61-5+deb8u1),
[code]....
I would like to downgrade the package that spoiled the desktop.

I loved Ubuntu up to 10.10. Then I installed Natty, and "Shades of Vista!!!" I thought I had escaped Microsoft clutter and "user friendliness" which put up all sorts of barriers to doing what I want to do.
Now it feels like I'm back in Vista. But even Vista allows the option of the "Classic View" menu.
Does Natty have an equivalent option of a classic view menu -- something a little more like 10.10?

Running Centos and the desktop was hanging. I did a little (clearly not enough) research and hit ctrl - alt - f7 which brought me to a black screen with a blinking curser in the upper left corner. Got out of that by ctrl - alt - f1 which put me in a terminal session but I really want to get back to the GUI desktop.
Startx gives me "-bash: startx: command not found"
Im logged in as root.

I can see I don't need MS windows. I did already crash my computer twice, not Linux's or Ubuntu's fault. I guess I'm having fun. But here's the question I was trying to setup the desktop like a server just a home network and used tasksel to add things turned my desktop Ubuntu into Xubuntu, and my laptop into Mutter. I was able to get Ubuntu fixed on the desktop but not the laptop. I know I can start from scratch and reinstall it,I think But and I just go back to the Ubuntu desktop by reloading something?

I ran the update last night and my Access Point died!It seems that the update has renamed my wireless interface from wlan0 to ath0.I also noted that the wlan0.mon and wireless.mon interfaces are not there any more? I may not have exactly the right names - 'cos there not there to check! I'll change hostapd.conf (interface=ath0) to reflect the new interface name. what else I must do to get my AP back after the 2.6.27.42 upgrade?

I ran an update about a week ago - I am not sure what update was but the update did not all the GUI to display.
Behavior:
Boot Sequence is okay but as soon as the nice Ubuntu image loads up usually the cool login GUI shows up after but instead I get a constant blinking console for a login.
FINALLY:
I couldn't figure out what it was through logs and I didn't make a restore point so I took my info of the hard-drive and re-installed Ubuntu.
NOW:
I ran into this problem again but this time I did not update anything. I had to log out of my account to switch monitors BUT I had Ubuntu set to automatically log my user name in when my finishes booting up (some option that is use-full). So now it is back to the constant blinking login console.
so what I got now is:
1) my computer automatically load my user name up
2) Switched monitors so I had to log off
3) After Logging Off I got a constant login console NOT GUI blinking like mad.
4) Tried rebooting and the issue still remains

I was dragging and dropping content from a folder onto the user desktop folder when suddenly instead of the packed Desktop Folder I got the Home folder with the few normal files that were in it AND one file called Desktop.
(actually, the file name was "Escritorio" and it was a PDF file, and in $HOME/.config/ the file user-dirs.dirs was changed to say XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/" instead of XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Escritorio")
I've searched around but only found how to recreate a folder calles "Desktop" (or "Escritorio") and have it act like such, but not how to eventually recover the original "Desktop" folder AND ALL ITS CONTENTS (quite a lot!)
Is there any way to get the content back?

I have been using Debian desktop environment for years. There, I can sudo init 1; do maintenance; exit to desktop environment again. But when I `resume' from Ubuntu-10.10's maintenance mode, I can just Ctrl-Alt-F1 to login and there seems not an interesting process running.
