View 9 RepliesAlthough it would resemble the Unity desktop that some of us here may have run away from, is it possible to set the left-hand-side dock to remain on screen, possibly only sliding off when a program window needs it to?

View 5 Replies View RelatedIf a file gets created in the user's Desktop folder, or if a drive is added to the machine and a Desktop icon is correspondingly created, they will by default appear on the left side of the desktop (unless, in the case of the latter, the specific drive has been created before and dragged to the right side, in which case GNOME will remember to put it in the same place).
Because I have a terminal window embedded onto my Desktop in the top left corner and occupying most of the screen), I keep my icons on the right side of the Desktop instead of the left (Mac style) - Any time I add a new drive or a file is sent to the Desktop, however, I have to kill the terminal window to be able to click on the icon, then drag it back to the right side, then restart the terminal.
Is there any way to tweak GNOME so that these icons are added from the top right corner and down instead of from the top left, automatically?
I would like to know how I can view two windows side by side on the same desktop (ex. have two openoffice files side by side) and be able to work on both of them at the same time rather than having to click back and forth from window to window. I have seen this done on people that have MAC computers is there anyway to do this on Ubuntu?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've tried some more recent builds of Libre Office from Alien Bob and I'm still getting crashes when I try to dock the Navigator panel on the left side of the window for any of the office applications.
Details are in this post. More specifically, I'm running libreoffice-3.2.99.3-i486 from Eric. When I run 'oowriter' (Libreoffice Writer) from the command line, and then try to dock the navigator panel, I get this message after the crash:
Code:
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to
retrieve property `GtkOptionMenu::indicator-size' of type
`GtkRequisition' from rc file value "0" of type `glong'
Gtk-Message: (for origin information, set GTK_DEBUG): failed to
retrieve property `GtkOptionMenu::indicator-spacing' of type
`GtkBorder' from rc file value "0" of type `glong'
I don't know if it happens with the 64-bit version or not. I haven't tried it yet. I'm no stranger to submitting bug reports, but I haven't looked closely at Libreoffice's bug submitting procedures. I'll do that soon.
I"m thinking of trying out Cairo Dock with Ubuntu for the next 2 weeks until Meerkat comes out, but if I prefer the gnome panel I'd like to bring that back. I can right click the lower task bar in Ubuntu and "remove this panel." if there is there any way I can bring it back? Also if anyone here uses Cairo Dock could you let me know your thoughts on it?

If you are like me, you can't stand the new placement of the Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons. Here is a useful how to guide, with screen shots, on how to put them back on the right side:[URL]
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried to apply some Compiz effects in my Ubuntu but I suppose something went wrong and I unabled something as now, when I turn it on, nothing appears: after login, I can just see the background and my desktop shortcuts: no side dock bar or top bar. I've installed Ubuntu last week and I don't know it very well. When start in in Safe Mode, the top bar appears and, although there's not the side dock bar, another bar appears in the bottom (I think that's normal in the Safe Mode). I have a Terminal shortcut, so I can access it, and when I create shortcutut in the Safe Mode it also appears in the Normal one, so access to software won't be a problem while solving this issue.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy cairo dock is acting funny. The desktop switcher is somehow at the top of the screen now. The other thing is that if i set the dock to the left side of the screen it moves to the right side of the screen but faces the other way, and if I move it to the top it stays at the bottom but is upside down

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm on 10.10. way to align the icons on the desktop to the right side instead of the left? When I click "Organize Desktop By Name" everything ends up on the left by default, I want to have it default to the right instead. Doesn't matter how complicated the solution is, I can do it as long as someone can give me the basic instruction. it's really only because I have an awesome desktop background, and the best part is covered with icons.
View 5 Replies View RelatedCairo was working fine for me then randomly I see a huge black box behind it. I also cannot access my desktop effects along with it to activate compiz. I googled here and on the net trying different commands such as
:~> xgl-switch --enable-xgl
If 'xgl-switch' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this:
cnf xgl-switch

I recently installed Ubuntu on my laptop and on my desktop i have two white lines on both sides. Ive been living with them there but after changing my theme ive really noticed them. Gnome-Panel covers up the lines, but they are still on the wallpaper.
Every wallpaper ive tried has had this problem, ive tried wallpapers with smaller resolution, same resoluton of my screen (1280x800) and larger ones.
I have a NVidia GeForce 8400 GS with drivers installed from jockey. Ive attached a screenshot.
I recently switched to Ubuntu, but wanted it to have an OSX feel, since I really enjoy the style of OSX. Hate all you want, but I can happily state I prefer Ubuntu as an OS, but much rather prefer the style of OSX's desktop. I'm still finishing it up, and there are a few things that I am still to change.
As you can see, I have placed a shortcut to my HD on the right side, but whenever I download something, it appears on the left. I was wondering whether or not you are able to change the side of the desktop items appear on?
When I position icons on the desktop in specific places, then I choose to move a file or folder into another folder, all the icons arrange back to the left side. This happened in an earlier version of KDE 4.x, disappeared the next version, and reappeared. how to keep this from happening. It makes using the desktop a pain in the you know what.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHave recently tried to start ubuntu with kubuntu-desktop, but as I reboot my computer kubuntu only shows the terminal after the login and I cant get my desktop back.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to unity and everything is fine. Then I accidentally enabled Desktop Cube and Cube Rotation. Suddenly, the top part of windows that you normally use to drag the window or close it etc. started disappearing. In a panic, I rebooted. Upon reboot I found myself in an even bigger mess than I could have imagined. Not only did this fail to fix the problem previously mentioned, it also caused the sidebar and the ubuntu bar at the top to disappear. Desktop icons still show, and my cursor is fully functional, but other than that, my system is unusable.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThere are pretty good graphical features on gnome. But I could not find a nice feature, allowing mouse pointer to turn-around the desktop area. I want the mouse pointer goes to left side of screen when it reaches right side of desktop and vice versa. Or goes to bottom of the desktop area when it reaches top of screen. It makes using mouse and moving around the desktop area using a touchpad easier.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am suddenly getting about 1.5" of the left side of my desktop on the right, covering what SHOULD be there. I thought it might be my gDESKLETS as I had problems with this newer version before but removing it didn't help, so unless it is leaving something that is causing it, I don't see this being it. & I haven't done or added anything else, that I can think of, that may be behind this. I AM running the default drivers for the nVIDIA card, but all seemed OK until recently.
This happens the most if I run a application in a reduced size window or run a ..... video full screen. Rebooting seems to clear the problem for the ..... & max then min the window clears it for that. I'm using gnome on F14.
I am running openSUSE 11.1 + KDE 4.2.I wonder where is the desktop button, which minimized all currently opened applications and brings you back to the desktop?
Please could someone let me know how or what do I need to insert to the control panel?
Not Fedora-specific, but I couldn't think of any other place to ask. So.
Is there a way to make the desktop "continuous" so that my mouse pointer would reappear on the other side of the desktop if I move it over the edge? I sometimes find it a little frustrating to have to go from one edge to the other on a multi-monitor setup, and there are a few other reasons why I would rather have it like that.
I have two (or more) video files that I want to play side by side. I could do that simply by opening them in two seperate windows, but that would also seperate all the controls (play/pause/forward/...). I want to play them in a synchronized fashion so that pause/forwarding/... works on both videos simultaneously so that they always stay at the same timecode and they don't go out of sync. How would I accomplish that in Linux?
This is needed for viewing only, so compositing them into a new video file first should be avoided if possible, but if there isn't an easy way to do that, I welcome answers doing it with composition as well.
Will I be able to have a partition on my computer to run Windows Vista and Ubuntu side-by-side?
View 2 Replies View Relatedhave been trying to setup a dual boot system with ubuntu and XP running side by side on my Thinkpad T41.tried it a few times and always causes the same problem. i have 40 gig HDD, on which i create a 13 gig NTFS partition and leave the rest as free space. then install XP on the NTFS partition. no problems.
then i boot from the ubuntu disk (9.10 Karmic) and install using the "use free space" option at the partition section. ubuntu installs ok, and boots fine from GRUB 2.0. BUT when i select the XP option from GRUB's list, it starts to boot XP, i get the standard XP loading screen for three seconds and then it crashes to a blue screen critical problem, and restarts the system. when i then boot from the xp cd and go into recovery mode CHKDSK will not recognise the disk, and DISKPART shows one HDD at 35 gig which it cannot access.
this means i cant run FIXBOOT and get my xp install running again. every time i do this process it produces the same problem. tried at first with xp installed on whole HDD, and reducing the xp partition size. killed XP. then tried ubuntu first and xp second - but this caused the same inaccessible disk problem - xp would not recognise the partitions and would not install. so i slipstreamed my XP install disk to SP2 hoping this would make it recognise the partitions, but no luck there. so had to format all and repartition the 13 gig NTFS for xp. installed xp again without difficulty but ubuntu install killed my xp in the same way.
How could I see stereoscopic side by side picture film using smplayer with vdpau on normal LED monitor?
