Ubuntu :: Change Desktop In 10.10 Back To The Metacity-based One In 10.04?
Jan 12, 2011
I upgraded from 10.04 desktop distro to the 10.10. But the new desktop makes my laptop awfully slow. I was very satisfied with the metacity setup in 10.04, and want to change back to it. But I dont now the details of what applications includes, and how I make default.

So in a failed experiment, I tried out xmonad for a couple months. I would now like to switch back to metacity for my default window manager. How can I do this?

I just downloaded Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 and am running it from a usb flash drive on my Acer laptop.
At times I'd like to use the Gnome desktop. I know with the previous version there was a way to change to Gnome. Is there still a way to change to Gnome on the 10.04 version and if so how do I change to Gnome and back to Netbook Edition desktop?

Got a simple question about xubuntu. I installed it from ubuntu via 'xubuntu-desktop' package and all seems to be working fine. My ubuntu programs and files appear in xubuntu and run normally. However, when I change the theme, the metacity window frame remains the same. How do I change it? It's stuck with the last used ubuntu metacity theme.

I have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.

I seemed to have crashed my X desktop and I never get a GRUB screen that allows me to boot into recovery. Long story short, I accidentally used metacity --replace (out of habit) when I lost my window decorations. This caused the panel and dash to crash and I couldn't get a terminal. So I forced a reboot and now I boot into a black screen every time. GRUB doesn't even give me my normal recovery mode option. After my BIOS posts it just shows me the purple splash screen then blackness. I have a LiveCD standing by but don't know where to go from there.

My conky file declares a color association with this
color5 green
and then after TEXT has this line
Code:
ISC: ${execi 60 /home/ben/scripts/isc.sh}
the isc.sh file has this
Code:
#!/bin/bash
curl http://isc.sans.org/infocon.txt | sed 'y/abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz/ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ/' > /tmp/isc
[Code].....
Why is it not displaying GREEN in the green colour? If I manually type ${color5}GREEN into .conkyrc its fine.

Using Fedora 13, I need to specify the language and keyboard on a per user basis. I am familiar with the necessary changes if editing system-wide /etc/sysconfig/i18n just not sure where the custom settings need to be based on user.

I recently installed language packs for Japanese and changed my system language to it, too. The problem is, now that I try to go back to English, the locale doesn't change back, only the menus are in english. "Apply system wide" in the Language Support didn't do anything; Firefox is in japanese too. Here is my locale output:
LANG=ja_JP.utf8
LANGUAGE=en_US:en
LC_CTYPE="ja_JP.utf8"
[code]....

I'm trying to install 10.10 to my very old 1GHhz Athlon based desktop machine, but when I boot with the CD in the drive, the machine just hangs at the 1st screen. Pressing Esc during boot to see what is going on, I find that the boot always gets as far as:"Checking battery status..."
As a desktop machine, it doesn't even have a battery. Is there anything I can do about this? Can I disable this check? The CD worked fine in a work machine (and quite nice it looked too btw!)

I'm a new openSUSE user. I want to make an account for my cousin, but we want our NTFS folders (from the dual WIndows XP install) inaccessible to each other. Problem is that, if I've read well in other searches, permissions can't be applied to NTFS (only the power to write, not only read, the whole partition). I know this can be done in Ubuntu, so I don't find a reason not to be able to do it, and I think my fault is that I'm using KDE (which I like more now, by the way) instead of GNOME.

I often need to change a small part of long environment variable (especially, e.g., paths), and do it either by pasting the thing into an editor and changing it there, or the equivalent.
Is there some small convenience utility to edit environment variables with a cursor on the command line?
I suppose I could always whip one up, but am hoping there's already something that I'm just not aware of.

I have created which uses Gnome Seed which is in the Ubuntu repositories (although the newest version needs to checked out from Git to allow it to work) and SeedKit which unfortunately isn't in synaptic but needs to be downloaded. The links to get the source for both projects are as follows:

The proof of concept is a JavaScript/HTML based frontend of Gnome's Log Viewer. It doesn't replicate 100% of Log Viewers functionality but it produces the basics of it which is to display the contents of Linux log files. The tutorial and link to download the source files are as follows:

For more information about SeedKit and HTML based User Interfaces are in my blog, link for that post is as follows:

After installing gnome-color-chooser for Ubuntu 10.10, I followed all the steps to enable transparent gnome menu. When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.

I loved Ubuntu up to 10.10. Then I installed Natty, and "Shades of Vista!!!" I thought I had escaped Microsoft clutter and "user friendliness" which put up all sorts of barriers to doing what I want to do.
Now it feels like I'm back in Vista. But even Vista allows the option of the "Classic View" menu.
Does Natty have an equivalent option of a classic view menu -- something a little more like 10.10?

I can see I don't need MS windows. I did already crash my computer twice, not Linux's or Ubuntu's fault. I guess I'm having fun. But here's the question I was trying to setup the desktop like a server just a home network and used tasksel to add things turned my desktop Ubuntu into Xubuntu, and my laptop into Mutter. I was able to get Ubuntu fixed on the desktop but not the laptop. I know I can start from scratch and reinstall it,I think But and I just go back to the Ubuntu desktop by reloading something?
