Debian Multimedia :: Where Are Desktop Files For Panel Launchers Located
Jul 4, 2015
I have made some custom launchers on my Xfce panel and was wondering where their .desktop file was located. I checked /usr/share/applications but they were not there.

Right after I did the distribution upgrade on debian, the little launchers in the bottom panel don't work right. When I have many programs running, and try to click the launchers to change programs, they don't always change right away. If I click the program windows, (if they are not maximized) they change fine.
I can click on the launcher for the program that is currently running on top and it will minimize and maximize, but I cannot change to another program right away by clicking the launcher. However, if I first right click the launcher, then it will respond to the next left click and the window will come to the top.
I wondered if it is just broken on my account, not the whole system, so I made a different account on the machine and it does not happen there. The new account works normally. So I am wondering how to reset my profile or theme or something to make the left click on the panel launchers work.
I don't know what they are actually called, but I am not talking about the shortcut launchers to start the programs. I only mean the little minimized box that stays in the panel when the program is already running.

I'm currently using Unity 0.2.46 on Ubuntu 10.10. Installed from a ppa. The only way I have found to add an application launcher to the panel is to actually launch the app, then right click it's icon on the panel and click "Keep in Launcher". This is great but I've noticed at least one of my applications (Mumble) doesn't give me that option. Is there an alternative method? (see screenshot for example)

On my Laptop, I installed Debian under the file "/" and the partition on which I have all my files under "/var". While this isn't really a big issue, when I originally installed Debian, I had the intention of having all of my files on a partition that I would auto-mount later so that when I upgrade my system by reinstalling it, I would only have to change the system partition and let everything else stay the same.. I can live without changing my /var if I can only do so by a re-install...

I am trying to get rid of the gnome panel shadow in ubuntu 11.04(classic, not using unity). I know that I can get rid of it using compiz but I do not want to use that. I suppose my question would be, where is the "panel-shadow.png" file located that I can edit and make transparent? I found it before but cannot for the life of me now.

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and this is my first experience with Unity. I have managed to create launchers in .local/share/applications and drag them to the launcher to add desired shortcuts. Here are two questions I have:
1) I am adding many shortcuts to various directories I frequently use; the shortcut's have commands like nautilus /home/user/some/dir. Despite the fact that I change their icons, when I drag them to the launcher they all use the Nautilus icon. Is there a way to fix this?
2) Is there a way to group the launchers? For example, having a group for office applications, and a group for directory launchers?

In the gmd3 greeter.conf-defaults file its tells me the themes are located /desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_theme, but wheres that directory actually at, like how I can find it?
Btw, I know I can go back to gdm, but I'd rather understand how to theme this, before. I might just.I'm using compiz, btw, if that makes any difference.

I was wondering what the reason was for disabling a feature like - creating new documents and files on desktop - by default?
If someone installs debian with desktop environment this user probably also want to use the desktop as a workplace, so why is that not a default setting?
But also in general i dont get it, i dont see any reason, why this is disabled.

If i got gnome i may go to the top-panel: choose system, choose preferences and go to "remote desktop" and make my settings (allow, ask for allow, password, and other stuff). I don't want to be bound to gnome (though i like it, thats not the problem).Which config-files are the ones i am looking for?
I did search the web, but i can't find useful how-to's, explanations, etc.Cause what i find is related to the path i described above (gnome: top-panel, preferences...)Which is the app/tool which pops up and says:"someone wants to access, you want to allow it, yes or no?". The performance of VNC is lousy comopared to NX. Lousy is the friendly version. What might i be doing wrong?i usually do it from a Debian-host to a VirtualBox-guest.I am mainly asking for how-to's/docus and stuff like that. Links. Explanations are welcome too. Of course.

OS: LucidSymptoms: Launchers are in Desktop folder, but they are not on the desktop. Also, when I "right click" on desktop, nothing happens (no pop up menus). Attempts to add new launchers to desktop (via "add launcher to desktop" or "click-n-drag") are notsuccessful.Symptoms the same on both monitors.Possible Cause: I just completed a problematic install of 2nd monitor (NVidia X Server). Currently running in TwinView. After install was completed I noticed launchers were missing.Info: Desktop folder is owned (RW) & group (R) to my user, execute is enabled, and Others is R, as are all files in folder.

There must be something turned on in the security settings keeping Desktop Launchers from working.I have verified that the launchers have execute bit turned on in the permissions, yet when try to start one, I get an alert window saying this is an Untrusted application launcher. How do I disable this feature, or in the alternative, make them trusted?

I have added an application launcher to my desktop and it works fine. However, I want to be able to feed parameters to the launcher before I launch the application. So, for instance, if the command is normally "/usr/bin/foo something" I want to be able to add the "something" parameter dynamically after clicking the launcher but before the application launches. Is this possible in Fedora?

I changed to wubi last night, i decided to go that way cause i was informed it was a safe way to try giving it a try for linux and ubuntu without any special effort needed to be payed and easily deleted if i am not pleased.Thankfully i am pretty satisfied with the results, i pretty much dealt with most of the issues i have faced so far successfully and i am running it ok beside one important thing.See i am using my laptop, which has a hdd of 250GB.On my Vista there are 2 different hdd C+E by default, they separated my hdd.So while i have windows on C and E is pretty much used for my additional data(see movies, music etc) when i installed wubi i installed it on E, thought it would be better and it had more space.
Now though, while i can access threw ubuntu all my files that were located on C(vista) i cant access any of the E ones, and search file dont helps either. The "vista hdd" as ubuntu describes it, its a 250 gb disk on computer, which means it should contain both of the vista disks. But sadly thats not the case.i cant seem to be able to find them anywhere.

I am trying to setup nfs to mount the drives located on my desktop, to my laptop, so I can watch them on my laptop rather then my desktop. I have both nfs server running on both the desktop and laptop. Desktop is running Arch Linux and the laptop is running Ubuntu, I keep getting this error claiming that the devices dont exist. I restarted all the services on both machines and tried editing my fstab/exports on both machines also but still nothing seems to be working.
Here is my nfs restart log from my laptop [URL]
And now desktop [URL]
Here is the export/fstab from my desktop [URL]
Now for my laptop export/fstab [URL]
There rather the same, but just wanted to include both for each machine just in case there is a distinct difference in something I did.

So I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

I have a dual screen setup with one card NVidia 8400GS.
Both screen are identical 22" LCD LG W2246 Monitors.
I have Dual X-Display setup.
I am using Gnome Desktop.
The left hand screen displays everything, menus, panels, background and of course desktop launchers.
The right hand screen displays everything except the desktop launchers.
If I create a new launcher on the left it appears on the left desktop when created.
If I create a new launcher on the right it appears on the left and can not be dragged over to the right screen.

After restoring my panel using these commands:
owner@owner-desktop:~$ gconftool-2 shutdown
owner@owner-desktop:~$ rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel
owner@owner-desktop:~$ pkill gnome-panel
my files on the desktop, in my home directory went missing. Also looking at my harddrive it seems like it has completely wiped out my content.I had some important files on my desktop and I am wondering if there is any way to get them back? It doesn't reasonable that all my files were deleted during a panel restore, maybe they are hiding under a rock somewhere . the system I am running it on is: Ubuntu 10.04
