I dual installed ubuntu and windows vista side by side, and when it boots up, my monitor comes up with an error saying to change the resolution and timing (60 hertz) When I press enter, ubuntu loads, but I have to use windows for some tasks () such as opening quickbooks files. How do I change the resolution and timing of GRUB?

Why is the list gone and how can I get it back?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a new netbook - "Eee PC 1005PE-PU27-BK" and installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04, Kernel Linux 2.6.32-24-generic. I love Ubuntu, but I also want to be able to access Windows 7 if I can. I've read some on GRUB, but the menu on startup isn't showing my Windows 7 instance. I've tried reinstalling GRUB, but when I run sudo update-grub, I still get this:

I know that Windows 7 is still on the system, I just can't access it.
I installed it from a cd and it wouldn't work. (froze in the process). I then tried to install it through windows wubi and that didn't work (wouldnt boot) since I was unaware it was a known issue and thought it was me doing something wrong I uninstalled it,reformatted the hard drive and tried to install via a cd again this time it fully iinstalled but when I rebooted it tells me unable to mount drives and a shell will be shown.
in the end I have no files on ubuntu so I would like to clean up all reminance of the previous installs and be able to use a working install. since I have been installing and reistalling for the better part of 8 hours.Yexcuse the post sloppiness using my phone)
I used StartUp Manager in Linux to change to "0" the time GRUB shows the "Select OS screen" now I'cant choose which OS I want to boot. Since WinXP is selected as the default OS, I can only log into Windows.
I've already tried to press the UP ARROW several times when the machine starts up but has no effect and the GRUB selection screen won't show up (This used to work on a desktop PC with GRUB and dual OS's). I'm on a laptop, is there any way to get to the GRUB select OS screen again?

I've had two students report a problem whereby Ubuntu does not show up as a menu option in Grub. Both systems used Wubi installations of Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop for x86 on Windows XP. In both cases, Ubuntu completed the installation process. Upon reboot, we have the options to choose between Windows XP and Ubuntu. However, once we enter into Grub, only the Windows XP option shows.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI just reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 (I was running it wubi but various issues prompted me to install it in a separate partition) and now windows isn't an option in the GRUB. I have windows Vista on /dev/sda2 and I can see it on GParted.
I tried looking through some of the other posts, but I think that I need some direct help with this one. I have tried update-grub and nothing changed.
I don't use Windows often, but it is nice to have the option.
All this is running on a Toshiba Saellite A215
Is there a way to show GRUB 2 interface only if you hold ESC at boot? If I remember well you can do it with GRUB 1.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a dual-boot setup with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. Each OS is installed on a separate partition of one hard drive. I read that installing Windows after installing Ubuntu wipes out Grub, so I made sure to install Windows first. Unfortunately, after completing the Ubuntu install and rebooting, I see no sign of the Grub menu. I followed several sets of instructions for reinstalling Grub, and after running grub-update, it appears that Windows 7 was added to Grub, and after examining the grub.cfg file, it appeared that that was the case. Despite appearing to be installed perfectly once inside Ubuntu, Grub doesn't show anything at startup. No matter what I try, I can't seem to make Grub appear, and now I can't get back to Windows 7. Am I missing something, or should I try a different bootloader?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running Karmic 9.10 in dual boot with Windows 2000. My computer has automatically updated and installed kernels 2.6.31-17, -19 and -20 (They show up in Synaptic as installed).
However, the newest kernel choice in my GRUB menu is 2.6.31-16-generic (followed by -15 and -14). These all start without any errors.
Question: Why haven't the newer updates shown up in GRUB for booting purposes?
Could it be a question that I didn't answer correctly some time back about accepting or not accepting an update or change in GRUB?
How can this be changed? The new kernels do not show up in Start-Up Manager either.
just tried downloading the latest version of ubuntu and install it on my laptop got an error message at the end of the installation (an I/O error, dev sr0,sector something) now when booting i got grub rescue. the only command working are ls and set. commands such as 'linux' or 'boot' show 'unkown command'
typing
ls (hd0,1) or ls /boot/
results in
unknown filesystem
I tried to reinstall grub using the 3 different methods as in [URL] got no error message while doing so except when typing sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda it told me something about being unable to locate ubuntu or something along those lines - sorry i thought i'd remember .. running out of option is there a possibility to download the latest pre 10.04 stable version?
After I used Ubuntu Tweak to clean up ALL the config files, I retsrated and Grub won't show the menu anymore. I'm still able to get to the latest kernels though but I want to log in to my windows.

1. Grub does not show Fedora15
2. Windows7 loader is listed as Windows Vista loader
I cannot log into Fedora15, though I can log into Windows... Please guide to the proper resolution of the above issue.
I got the grub loader to work finally. The problem is it does not always display at initial boot or a restart. I have seen the selection menu but it doesn't always appear. I have it set to point to windows so that my wife can hit enter when she gets a blank screen.
Below is the contents of my /etc/grub.conf file:

I just upgraded to F15 from 14 and F15 doesn't show up in GRUB only 2 kernels of F14. I can't obviously boot into either one, so now I am stuck with nothing.

I have installed the realtime kernel packages according to the Ubuntu Studio preparation documentation here - I have also run sudo update-grubHowever, when I boot up, the realtime kernel option does not show up in grub2. The current kernel I am using is 2.6.31-17, but the only options in grub for it are -386 and -generic.
There is a previous entry of 2.6.31-9-rt which I had attempted to use previously (sometime last year) but if I select it, it doesn't even boot at all.I checked my /boot directory and there is no vmlinuz-2.6.31-17-rt file .... Which I am assuming is why it doesn't show up or add when I run update-grub ... But I am currently at a loss for how to actually get the 2.6.31-17 realtime kernel file and add it to grub2.
I'm encountering an unusual problem with GRUB 2. Whenever I start up my system, my BIOS'es load and do their thing, and then hand the show over to GRUB, which is supposed to not appear or do anything because my GRUB countdown is set to 0, but instead I get two errors like this that appear for about 5 or 10 seconds (greatly delaying startup) and then Xubuntu, the first entry on my Grub menu, loads: (I set GRUB to automatically boot my first entry):

i have recently installed ubntu 9.10 and u wanted to dual boot it with xp that i already got installed i have installed it and than i didnt know how to get two my windows back becuse the grub menu didnt show and it had bugs . so i formted the ubunttu partion (to ntfs) with the live cd of it and now wiil now boot windows it showes me "grub recovery>" commend line somthing like that what to do to boot my windows back i am now with the live cd of ubuntu wrting you this.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just installed a second hard drive in my laptop with windows 7 on one drive and Ubuntu on the other. I selected the side-by-side install in the Ubuntu install and let Ubuntu do the rest. Unfortunately Grub isn't seeing the windows install even after reconfiguring grub. However, the windows 7 drive is visible in Ubuntu and all the windows files are there intact.
Does anyone know how I can make grub see Windows 7 so I can boot into it?
I just installed squeeze and at finish it asked me if it write the MBR with gurb.
I say yes, but after restarintg, squeeze doesnot appear in grub.

View 5 Replies View RelatedBasically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...
I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.
If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...
I can not boot from cd or usb!
Anyway since I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 when I right-click on something and there is another menu in that menu, it doesn't show up for the first time!
for example if I want to create a an "Empty File", I'll right-click on desktop and when I want to go to "Create Document" menu, it doesn't show up! so I must click somewhere else and try again so for the second time it works!!
