I've had two students report a problem whereby Ubuntu does not show up as a menu option in Grub. Both systems used Wubi installations of Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop for x86 on Windows XP. In both cases, Ubuntu completed the installation process. Upon reboot, we have the options to choose between Windows XP and Ubuntu. However, once we enter into Grub, only the Windows XP option shows.
View 8 Repliesmy Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

View 1 Replies View Relatedi have a dual boot. i loaded 9.1 on one disk and windows xp is on another. grub worked fine. i downloaded 10.4 and i must have selected the wrong option cause when i restarted it dropped me into a shell. i reloaded 9.1 and wiped out 10.4. again i must have selected the wrong option cause i get the grub menu with an option for windows but nothing happens. 9.1 comes up alright and i can select windows office files from ubuntu.

recently performed an upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. when I rebooted, my GRUB menu showed only the memtest86+ option, rather than the usual options for Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Arch, and WinXP (which I haven't booted in a very long time, so I am almost 100% sure that it is not WinXP's fault. I was able to boot using a Live CD, and when I checked grub.cfg, all of my boot entries were still there. However, when GRUB itself actually loads, only memtest86+ is in the menu. I also checked that I can still boot by editing the memtest86+ option in grub so that it matched the entry for Ubuntu in grub.cfg, and it still booted correctly. However, I am curious as to why my GRUB is now forcing me to manually enter the boot entry on each boot. Here is my grub.cfg:

I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot system with Windows XP very carefully. Unfortunately, though given the option to boot Windows at the grub menu, when I select it, I get an error. Booting Ubuntu on my other partition works just fine, no issues.
I also attempted to access files from the first partition in Ubuntu using gparted, but once I mounted it, all of my files were not present. I only saw manufacturer files, and many files and folders I didn't recognize.
Also, as an aside, my laptop monitor is suffering from occasional black-outs during use. Ubuntu gave me a little toolbar flag, telling me to go to a website and use the patches given to fix it, but I'm not quite so sure where to input the given patch text. Do I really need to go through the trouble of finding the source code, etc., or is it more simple?
I know that there is a nice little launcher that will run the script for Grub to select a menu option upon shutdown for a reboot [URL]
I however would like to use this from Windows XP and have grub select menu item 2 during a reboot. Does anyone know if there is any way to set Grub commands from within Windows?

Whenever I start up my system, my BIOS'es load and do their thing, and then hand the show over to GRUB, which is supposed to not appear or do anything because my GRUB countdown is set to 0, but instead I get two errors like this that appear for about 5 or 10 seconds (greatly delaying startup) and then Xubuntu, the first entry on my Grub menu, loads: (I set GRUB to automatically boot my first entry):

I am trying to install ubuntu on my brand new fresh out of the box Asus Eee PC 1018P but the problem is when I hit esc during the boot to get to bios to select boot from usb, the usb doesn't show up as an option. I also tried hitting f2 and making it an option to boot from usb but that doesn't seem to work either.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe first is I seem to have 3 GRUB installs. So whilst I update the one from my live session, the change does not appear in the boot up menu. I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).

My system had Windows Vista initially. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit initially and everything was fine. I was able to use both the OS. Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit in the same partition as Ubuntu 10.04 by dividing it into two equal halves. Now I am able to boot into 32 bit 10.10 but when I try to boot into the old 64 bit 10.04 it says unable to mount /root/proc, and some other "Unable to mount.." messages and it gives me a command prompt. I entered into 32 bit 10.10 OS and did update-grub2 and when I restart, the boot menu has no option for 64 bit 10.04 version at all... How can I restore my Ubuntu 64 bit 10.04 and boot into it..

My computer cannot boot from a usb. I have tried.
I have windows 7 installed on my system.After that I installed Ubuntu 8.XX on it.I have made a drive empty for this purpose and use manuall installation on this drive.When installation completed, I restart my PC but didn't saw option of Windows(or other) in boot menu.My Ubuntu is working fine and I can see the C and D drives ( which were there before installation) and there are all files related to windows in C.Can anybody let me know how to get Windows option in booting menu so that I can use my windows too.

Probably already posted before; however each case usually is somehow different. I use Ubuntu only occasionally to learn how it works.
After the latest update using Update Manager, quite a few packages were installed without any problem. However GRUB2 does not show the Windows-XP(Prof) partition in the menu anymore. Now I can't boot Windows because I can't select what is not shown.

It is already the second time that GRUB2 changes the menu items as it pleases, messing up the bootmenu. How can I repair the bootmenu in order to be able to boot Windows-XP, as before the updates ?

I know this is an Ubuntu Forum (duh) but I'm having trouble booting Fedora. I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 loaded on to my HDD and GRUB boots both of them just fine. I installed Fedora 15 on dev/sda7 (a clean partition) and I'm using the same swap for both Linux distros. I am not that new to Linux but I still need fairly detailed instructions.
My problem: Fedora does not show in the boot menu and I'm not sure how to get it there.
I've heard about something going funny when the kernel updates and something about chainloading but I'm no expert on either.
I have a /boot partition, and the online update process has downloaded the upgrade to /boot/upgrade. The problem is that grub is actually booting from a directory /boot which is in the root partition, but is invisible once the machine has booted, because the /boot partition is mounted over it. The result of all this is that the upgrade option does not appear in the boot menu, because that option has been inserted in the menu.lst (or grub.conf) in the /boot partition. is it ok for me to run:grub-install /dev/sda4(that's the device that contains the /boot partition where the upgrade menu option and data). Also, do I need the --root-directory option, given that the boot directory is the root directory of that partition.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have the same problem with an Ubuntu 10.04 live CD. Whenever I attempt to boot (Lu|U)buntu from a live CD/USB, on most computers. it works just fine. However, on two computers, the live media starts off just fine with the main menu (Try Ubuntu without installing, etc.), then, when I select any option except 'Boot from First Hard Disk', after a few seconds, the CD stops spinning or the USB loses power. I'm convinced it's not a problem from the media, since it works perfectly fine on some computers.

I have my machine booting Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10 (64bit), and OpenSUSE 11.3 (64bit). All good. When I added OpenSUSE it was really easy.There is an option not to install grub. I ticked the box and once installed I simply re-booted into Ubuntu and 'sudo update-grub'. Voila, job done. (Interestingly it uses the same /swap as Ubuntu so that is convenient, an accident, long story, and off topic!) Is there a similar option in Ubuntu where during install I can choose not to install grub and use the same method as I did with OpenSUSE?
Also, I am wanting to use the existing Ubuntu /home and /swap partitions. How do I go about that? I will do some further research on that bit and no doubt find the answer but I'm figuring I create just one partition, /, during install and somehow direct it to use the existing /home and /swap. Issue is, won't it create a /home directory inside the / partition if I don't allocate a /home partition during install?
Reason I'm doing this? I have a Realtek wireless card that has never behaved. I ended up emailing Realtek only to discover the driver/firmware wasn't suitable for 64bit systems. Therefore I am going to attempt to install Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 32bit version and see if I can't get the card behaving there.
I had thought of Virtualbox for doing this (which I have installed but haven't used yet) but decided against it only to save time when booting. I would need to boot the 64bit Ubuntu then the 32bit Ubuntu inside that. Waste of ten seconds!
