Ubuntu :: GRUB Does Not Show List Of OS Anymore
Apr 19, 2010
I have been using Ubuntu for a few days and it keeps on surprising me: This morning when I turned my pc on instead of displaying list of available OS versions GRUB just prints out "[ Minimal BASH-like line...." and console with prefix "sh:grub>". Why is the list gone and how can I get it back?

I have a PC with three partitions: C, D, E. The C: and D: partition are NTFS and C: has Windows XP on it. D: holds my data files and folders in the Windows environment. E: has CentOS version 5.x. The machine is dual bootable. When booting up Grub gave me the options to boot to CentOS (by default) or to boot into Win XP (by selecting it).
Recently I used Partition Magic to resize the D: partition. I shrank the D: partition. The freed space space was then used to create a new NTFS partition.
After the partitioning was completed, I rebooted the machine. But now Grub is having a problem. It does not display the list of of bootable OS options any more. Instead there is just a black screen with the prompt:
grub>
What am I supposed to do here?
I am afraid that after I ran Partition Magic somehow Grub is messed up. How do I recover the previous boot options? Or at the minimum, how do I make the the machine to boot into Windows XP?

All I want is for my bootloader to show "Ubuntu" & "Windows XP" which are the only 2 OS's I have installed (dual booting). At the moment it shows Windows XP, Ubuntu, Ubuntu recovery mode & like 2 more.. which are also Ubuntu & recovery mode. I've never selected the other Ubuntu ones, only the first one. So, how can I remove the ones I don't want to show on the list.

I'm fairly new to Ubuntu and I like it a lot. However, there's a graphical error which started to happen after the very first bootup. The startup screen (the purple one with the 5 dots that appear) isn't showing anymore. It is replaced by some console technical guff scrolling down my screen (which isn't a problem, because Ubuntu itself works fine, but it just looks a bit rough). Again, on shutdown, it displays some amalgamated mix of more technical jargon, and a terribly lo-res version of the shutdown screen.
Is there any way I can fix this?

I'm using Kaffeine 1.0-svn3 from Packman repo on openSuse 11.2 with KDE 4.3.5. In Kaffeine, I can not find the menu where I can choose the subtitles. (I want to watch an avi-file with a separate subtitle-file in srt format). With openSuse 11.0, KDE 3.5.8. and an older version of Kaffeine, there was a possibility to select subtitle files (srt).

After installing latest Firefox on my new PC and importing bookmarks from old PC, none of my bookmarks in the pull down table have individual icons as seen on the navigation bar- just the 'blank page' icon. I've deleted bookmarks, navigated to the page and bookmarked it again, but still the blank page icon. Have re-installed Firefox but still no joy.

i changed the boot up resolution in the boot up loader to 1366*768 (native res of my monitor) the boot option is still set to quiet splash however, instead of showing the progress bar, it would now always display the complete boot up log ( the list of starting services and such) i then manually changed the boot option from to 1024*768 at boot loader screen, and teh splash would show up, but then on next boot up if i stick with 1366*768, it doesnt work again

while trying to boot in windows 7, I accidentally hit the wrong Grub option, which started a recovery service for window. I got a white screen with red letters saying ERROR and the computer froze there. I decided to reboot it, but now all I get is the Grub rescue prompt.

I've got a double boot system (Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu Maverick). Since I updated Grub2, Grub doesn't work anymore! I'd tried this (because I HAD that error). But since than, I'd a black screen (harddisk didn't anything, and Grub too...) And now, after using a couple of these commands via the Ubuntu Lucid Lynx Live CD I get a mini bash in Grub, but no entry's to one of the two systems! What's wrong, and what do I have to do? (and what did I wrong?

Installed Debian 6 last night after using Ubuntu for close to 3 years. Couldn't believe how wonderful everything was put together and working, with some minor beginning glitches (like nvidea 3D drivers not working) which were to be expected.
But now I'm sitting back in Ubuntu because I can't get Debian started from Grub anymore. The Grub menu is still there and the selections work fine too. I honestly have no idea what caused this. Last thing I was doing in Debian took place in the Software Center where I was installing some GTK+ themes and looking for some general utilities. I did find a Boot Logo/Login changer, at least that's what I think it was, and when I clicked on install ... I received a message that that application was already installed (must have been by default or through synaptic perhaps).
Anyway, as soon as that message cleared out, perhaps 2 or 3 seconds later the screen crashed and everything went black ... I'm assuming that the xerver crashed. Did a CTRL, ALT, DEL which successfully restarted the system. Got back to the grub menu, selected Debian, and got the black screen again with a login for a user, followed by the password request. Knowing next to nothing about Debian I was obviously stuck at that point. Then I tried the recovery console, and exactly the same thing happened.
Rebooted again, got back into the recovery console, and this time, after adding my user name and password, used CTRL + D which caused a ton of text to appear on the black screen. Near the end of it came a FAILURE message ...
Startpar: service(s) returned failure: gdomap failed:

I recently installed Fedora as dual boot with XP on my netbook, but then decided to uninstall it again. I probably did it in the wrong way because everything is messed up. I installed Fedora in a separate partition, so I just deleted that partition. Now when I rebooted my netbook, it starts GRUB.
I get some sort of command prompt like cmd.
grub> {here I can type commands}
I tried several stuff to get everything normal again. First I made a bootable USB which starts the XP Recovery console. Then I used these commands :
Code:
fixboot
fixmbr
I reboot, and there it is again ... the GRUB. How can I get Windows XP working again? I didn't touch the C: boot partition, so the XP installation should still be intact.

We built a library by linking it with a shared library libjvm.so. Now, when I do ldd mylib.so, it does not list libjvm.so. When I run an application, I get a symbol missing from mylib.so, which is actually defined in libjvm.so. Even if I set libjvm.so path in LD_LIBRARY_PATH, the error does not go away.

I'm running on RHEL 5.I have a PREROUTING rule that redirects port 443 to port 8443. If I do "iptables --list" or "iptables -v --list" I see only the standard chains listed. As the prerouting rule is the only rule I have, it appears that I don't have any rules. Is there a way to do a full and true listing of all rules other than "iptables-save"? You might just as well read the iptables file.

On KMail (KDE 4.3.5), I normally had the "Fancy" Message Header style (which I like), but I wanted to inspect all the headers for one particular email, so I clicked View - Headers - All Headers.
That was a mistake. I can't get back to having KMail default to Fancy Message Headers - no matter what I select for an email, every new email shows up as "Standard Headers".
I can't find any options under Settings - Configure KMail that would control the default view. Does anyone know how I can get back to defaulting Fancy Message Headers?

I'm using a dual boot system with Fedora and Windows XP. Until a few days ago i could boot in Windows or Linux choosing the option during boot. I have updated Fedora with common updates these days and now i can't boot in Windows anymore, because there are no entry for it anymore to the boot menu.
The graphical boot configuration tool (i'm using Gnome) only lists three different kernel for Fedora but any entry for a Windows partition. Here is how my disk appears:
I'd like to know why this occur and, mostly, which is the most easy way to restore the dual boot

I've read the sticky post about getting my wireless to work. Here's what I know:
Wireless LAN doesn't show up in my hardware list. But the wireless usb adapter I have (D-Link DWA-160) does show up under USB devices, with the following UDI info:
UDI:/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_devices_7d1_3a09_12345_if0
When I look at the boot.msg log I see nothing about a firmware failing to load. Does that mean I already have it?
When I try the /usr/sbin/iwconfig command I get:
lo no wireless extensions
eth0 no wireless extensions
When I try the /usr/sbin/iwlist scan command I get:
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.
eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
There's a page (ar9170 - Linux Wireless) where I can supposedly download the ar9170.fw firmware that supports this device. But when I try to download it it doesn't show up in the /lib/firmware directory and I don't know why.
The system sees the USB adapter, but it doesn't appear to be working. Do I need the firmware? And if so, how do I download it-

I know I do fdisk -l /dev/sda and see all the partitions on that disk, and I know I can do mount and see all the mounted partitions. Is there a way to do both at the same time? Ideally what I'd like to see is the output of fdisk -l but with an additional column that shows if a partition is mounted or not.

If you typed it in, my fdisk -l looks like this
[Code].....
I partitioned it using the Acronis (proprietary) partitioning software. I've had to move these around a bit when I initially set it up and at one point grub didnt work anymore. It was after I had to expand my Windows (7) partition. However I'm told that most modern software dont use the same unit of measurement that fdisk still uses 'til this day. Should I even be concerned? I did have to reinstall grub after I initial set all my partitions up. This post is merely a double-check to make sure.

I am using Open office 3.2 with Ubuntu 10.10. Trying to get it set up to print out the Christmas address labels. To register the data source its 'FILE'> 'WIZARDS' then' ADDRESS DATA SOURCE.' But OO doesn't show the 'ADDRESS DATA SOURCE' at the bottom of the list, so I am stuck. Apart from that, I have had no problems with ubuntu and its working well.

Is there a way to make a dialog with zenity which would show an updating list? Zenity does it with progress, but I didn't figure out if it's possible to do it with the list. I.e. for example, I want to monitor something, and update the dialog with new list periodically. Is it even possible? zenity can wait for data from stdin, but it just adds stuff to the list. May be there are some control sequences which clear the list in the dialog?
For example:
{ echo "Foo"; sleep 2; echo "Bar"; } | zenity --list --title='Dynamic list?' --text='Some data' --column='values'
How can I instead of adding Bar, replace the Foo with it?

I have two wifi routers. If I stand next to the main one with my laptop I can connect and access the internet no problem. The other router is in my office, and the bridging is messed up, so while I see the essid and bssid using 'iwlist scanning' and nm-tool, I can't connect to it.
Now, my main router's signal still reaches to my office, just not as strong as the borked router in my office. I need to be able to choose which wifi network to connect to without wasting time walking between rooms. I added entries for both in network-manager, but it doesn't show them in the list when I left click the tray icon! How the do I connect to the network I want?
