General :: Grub Mod Files Show As Music File Type For Mint 8 Gnome

Jan 1, 2010

In the /boot/grub/ all the grub mod files show as music file type for Linux Mint 8. So is it really needed to correct this, and how to change this file type from some music application to the grub module file type association?

Ubuntu :: All Files Show As Type Plain Text?

Apr 14, 2011

I somehow managed to screw up my lucid lynx system so that all files show up under Nautilus properties as Type Plain Text. When I double click a file, any file, the system tries to open it as plain text with gedit. Everything worked correctly until yesterday when I tried to install a new version of PyQt4. If I reboot with an old (karmic) version of Ubuntu and bring up Nautilus Properties on the same file (my data partition can be opened in other OS's) the files show up with the correct file type (PDF, ODT, etc) So the problem is not in the file itself, but rather in the lucid OS, which is mis-interpreting the file type. As I said I somehow messed it up when installing the new version of PyQt4.

General :: GRUB Legacy - Unable To Determine The File System Type?

Dec 8, 2010

I had only Arch on an HDD.sda2 was "/".Now it's with Windows XP and sda2 is not a root any more but a container partition wich has sda{5,6,7} in it. I configured the dual boot and it works. It finds Arch and boots it, but not completely. Stops after some time and says: unable to determine the file system type of /dev/sda2. FSTAB is configured, sda{5,6,7} are on their places. So I can't boot Arch. XP boots correctly. What do I do with this error? Also it says: try adding rootfstype=your_filesystem_type to kernel command line.

Ubuntu :: Music Does Not Show On IPod Touch Music Library

Nov 26, 2010

I recently got an iPod touch 2nd gen. I plugged it in and it immediately showed up in Rhythmbox. I dragged and dropped music files to the iPod icon listed under devices on the left hand pane. The files ARE on the iPod, I can confirm by finding them on the device in Nautilus. The problem is, they do not show up in the music library on the actual iPod. Did I miss something, or is there a step I must take to get them to show up in the iPod's music library so I can play them?

Software :: Grub Error 2 - Bad File Or Directory Type

May 19, 2010

I am building centos - debian dual boot system. Each os has separate boot partition, both ext3.
Installed Centos 5.5 x86 with grub into MBR.
Installed debian 5.0.4 x86 with no boot loader.
Added debian to centos boot partitions grub.conf

Centos boots fine. When I tried to boot debian I got grub error:
Code:
Error 2: Bad file or directory type

Grub's command line auto compledion didn't work on debians boot partition - looks like it does't recognize that partition as ext3 (but when I booted centos and tried to mount debian boot partiotion - no problem it mounted ). And this is not single fs corruption - after another debian reinstallation the problem remained. Anyway recreating that fs using "mke2fs -j /dev/sdxx" solved the problem.

Software :: Using Foremost And General Undelete - Mint GNOME

Mar 15, 2010

I am running Linux Mint 6 x64 and GNOME w/ all or most updates.

I mistakenly deleted a folder containing many of my movies that I have transcoded from my collection. I have attempted to restore the files using Foremost, and once I got it working, I found that Foremost was able to restore or partially restore many previously deleted videos, but not any of the most recently deleted files. I am not sure how many total videos, but I estimate that I had 15-30 movies in the folder.

Here is what happened: I had two folders and pressed Delete with the wrong folder selected (somewhat Ironically I was in the process of backing the data up). A message box poped up saying something to the effect of "these files cannot be sent to the Trash, would you like to delete them?" I clicked yes. When I checked the Trash, they were of course not there.

The files are located on a dedicated drive (single partition) that has not been mounted since the incident, except for while attempting recovery.

Is it possible that Foremost cannot detect them because they are still intact somewhere? Are they too big for the program to handle? Should I be using another program or method?

Ubuntu :: Add The File Type Extension To The End Of Multiple Files?

May 30, 2011

I have made the simple mistake of using dolphin to rename several picture files of types jpg and png. I have no problem viewing them and Ubuntu still knows which is which (if i view their properties it will state File Type: JPEG or PNG) but unfortunately Ubuntu Tweak does not allow you to chose them without the extension (I am trying to change my login background using this) So what i need is something that can scan several files, determine the file type, and add an appropriate extension to it. I have found several to do so for music files but none for images. I am using Ubuntu 11.04 at the moment.

Ubuntu Servers :: Mdadm Music Corruption - Link ITunes Library To The Music Files Via A Samba Share?

Dec 19, 2010

I've been building my digital music collection for some time and used to house it on a local drive with no quality issues. A while back I built myself a file server using ubuntu and mdadm in a raid1 configuration to protect against potential drive failure. I link my iTunes library to the music files via a samba share and everything works great on the surface. I've started to notice that random songs are becoming corrupted with pops clicks and silent pauses. I'll even re-download an album and notice that it's corrupted a few weeks later. Now I'm at a loss to what is causing this issue; I ignored it at first but it seems to be getting worse and more widespread as time goes on.

Do you think this could be caused by mdadm? It reports that all is fine via 'cat /process/mdstat' but I wouldn't know where to look or what to look for if there were syncing issues. The other possibility is that I have iTunes set to keep my music folder organized for me, but I've never heard of it actually corrupting the files it shuffles around. The bottom line is that my library is getting crappier as time goes on and I cannot stand for that!

Ubuntu :: Changing File System Type To Another Filesystem Type - Does It Effect On Data?

Feb 4, 2011

In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5

previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal

After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data

By doing that

1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.

2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.

Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)

I had very imp data in d:drive

General :: Can't Log In To Desktop - Root Can't Access My Files Mint 9 XFCE?

Mar 9, 2011

A couple weeks after I installed the xfce desktop version of Linux Mint, I became unable to log in to my own desktop. I enter my password, but the screen fades to black and then fades back in to the login screen.

I am able to log in using the recovery mode terminal and everything works as expected. I can log in to the Mint desktop as root, but the superuser can't view my files. Instead, there are only a .desktop file and a README telling me that my files have been unmounted (they're not on their own partition) and they give me instructions on how to remount them.

So I follow the instructions. Running the .desktop through the browser GUI quickly opens and closes a terminal, doing nothing. Running ecryptfs-mount-private, as the README recommends, reports:

Code:
ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly
And that's where I'm stuck.
