Ubuntu :: GDM Doesn't Load / What To Fix It?

Jan 5, 2010

I'm posting on behalf of my friend who is very happy with his Ubuntu installation on his laptop.
However, he has one problem, and that is sometimes GDM doesn't load, and Ubuntu boots to a text-based login.
When this happens, he power-cycles the machine and more often than not it will work.
He is dual-booting with Windows XP.

Ubuntu :: Connection - Load A Website Taking To Long To Respond And Sometimes Doesn't Load

Oct 2, 2010

When i open one of the web browsers i use and try to load a web site it's taking to long to respond and sometimes it doesnt load the website at all. I have tried with firefox, epiphany, opera with all the same results. I am sure that this is not a problem with my internet connection because i don't have these problems with windows. Also the network manager connection settings are correct

I also tried choosing the old kernel(2.6.32.24) to boot from but no success. The problem is the same as if i am using the 2.6.32.25 kernel. The strange thing is that i can download packages from synaptic with full speed. Last think.I have recently downloaded the recommended updates from the update manager but i don't remember what are the things that where updated.

Fedora Installation :: GRUB Doesn't Load - Make Load Again Upon Booting?

Feb 9, 2009

I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:

What do I need to do to make GRUB load again upon booting?

Things to note:Cheese works so I know my webcam in Ubuntu is functional. I've tried purging the flash plugin and reinstalling it. It doesn't work on Chrome and Firefox so it's definitely only a flash problem. I'm not using any medication so I know it isn't me just imagining it. Ubuntu :: GUI Doesn't Load After Start-up?

Jan 2, 2010

I've just switched from XP to Ubuntu 9.1 on a relatively old computer (6-9 years?) yesterday, and everything worked like a dream. I've used my computer twice today and nothing seemed to be going wrong...but then came the problem. I haven't toggled with the settings too much since I'm still very new to Ubuntu, but whenever I log in with my password, the GUI doesn't automatically start up. I get the terminal in the right left-hand corner instead, and none of the fixes I've found so far have worked. I usually get some variant of an error message or my hostname doesn't exist.

I've tried:

startx
sudo apt-get install xorg
apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
sudo nano/etc/apt/sources.list

Ubuntu :: Opera Doesn't Load Themes?

Jan 14, 2010

I recently installed Opera 10.10, and I'm loving the browser.I decided to try out some themes, decided I didn't like them, and went back to the default theme which I like. Now though, the right click menu of the mouse doesn't actually load a theme - similar to when a program that needs root privilages (Synaptec package manager for example) won't be skinned unless you put a theme folder in the .root directory.I've attached an image of the right click menu.how to get Opera to load the Gtk (I think) theme or inbuilt theme for context menus. I've tried removing/reinstalling, but it didn't work

Edit: Just noticed - buttons, and windows inside opera, aren't being themed either. So it seems anything that requires themes outside of Opera's main window won't work.

Ubuntu :: Theme Doesn't Always Load On Login?

Mar 5, 2010

When I log in locally, sometimes my theme isn't applied. This problem started a few weeks ago, but before that the same theme would load just fine every time. In order to get my chosen theme to load, I go System > Preferences > Appearance. As soon as I click "Appearance"...boom. My theme loads and all is fine. I don't have to change settings or anything....just start the "Appearance" utility.

This doesn't all of the time, only sporadically. Another thing to mention is that I'm using AWN. When this happens, AWN doesn't load all of the launchers. I killall and restart AWN and all is good there. Anybody have a clue what could be going on? Compiz related?

Sometimes the window borders corrects itself, but the icons stay the same. Reloading compiz doesn't help, and the only solution I found was to logoff/logon.

Ubuntu :: Login Window Doesn't Load

Aug 27, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a second OS on my XP machine (on a second partition). It worked fine for about a month, but this time when I booted up in Ubuntu, it showed the Ubuntu loading screen, then the desktop background picture and mouse, but it did not load the login window. I have no idea how to fix this, because most problems are about the entire X server not working, whereas my screen works.

I tried pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1, stopping gdm, then running startx, which mostly worked, except the date and time status bar addons had an error loading and the task bar did not have any workspace icons on it. I would like to login the normal way to get back to my good old Ubuntu desktop, but the window does not want to load. I have restarted the computer multiple times, with the same result.

Ubuntu :: Booting But Doesn't Load The Startup GUI

May 2, 2011

I am still new to Ubuntu but I am having a problem when booting into Ubuntu 10.10. When I turn on the computer, after a few screens go by I see a boot manager giving me the option of:

1: Earlier Versions of Windows
2: Windows 7
3: Ubuntu

All OSes are working with no trouble. But when I try to boot into Ubuntu, I get another boot screen that states:

1: Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-28-generic
2: Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-28-generic (recovery mode)
3: Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-22-generic
4: Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-22-generic (recovery mode)
5: Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda2)

When I choose 1 or 3, quite often it doesn't load up the startup GUI, it loads up some command line crap that I don't understand yet, where I type in reboot until I finally get Ubuntu loaded, this happens several times then finally works to the point I can log in. What could be going on, my install is inside Windows 7, not a full install if that matters. What is the difference between line 1 and 3?

As many people have posted before regarding this issue, i think it was me who messed things up as i believe i incorrectly put grub on the sda1 ? when they asked about grub config during installation i was a bit lost, and even though i went off the help it said if you were not sure choose all of them..

So i am wondering if there is an easy way to fix this. As i am running sata drives on my laptop, so my windows xp recovery option is out... and all i have is a windows image, which i would like to try and repair from ubuntu as i can start ubuntu up.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 On PS3 No Boot - Install CD Doesn't Load

Oct 14, 2010

has anybody tried 10.10 on their PS3 (FW 3.15)? I first ran an update from 10.04 (which was working fine, including ext4 FS), and upon rebooting after the update, all I had was a black screen after PetitBoot. I then tried to do a clean install with the 10.10 PPC+PS3 Alternate CD, but same black screen after selecting any type of install from CD in PetitBoot. I then installed the OtherOS that's on the 10.10 CD (KBoot); same black screen. Went back to PetitBoot and tried the PS3 desktop 10.10 CD; same problem. I was almost ready to give up and reinstall 10.04 when I thought of using the "linux-old" option in PetitBoot. This loaded the newly upgraded Ubuntu 10.10 on my HD, with the difference that it's using kernel 2.6.32 instead of 2.6.35. This works fine. So here's my question (at last ): was the PS3 port of 10.10 tested by anyone before being pushed as a release on cdimage.ubuntu.com, or is there an incompatibility with kernel 2.6.35 that was never noticed, except for here where it didn't seem to go anywhere: [URL]? If I'm the only one left on earth with firmware 3.15 and interested in Ubuntu on PS3 at this point.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Fusion Set To Load On Boot It Doesn't?

Mar 27, 2011

Compiz Fusion set to load on boot; it doesn't. Settings checked as start on boot, it just doesn't and has to be loaded manually from desktop 2.) Desktop Drapes (wallpaper changer) also set to load on boot; also doesn't do so, even though checked to do so, and also must be loaded manually from desktop. 3.) Something is hogging CPU cycles something awful; if I have more than a few tabs in Firefox open, it takes forever to scroll or reload, and the entire system just bogs almost to the point of unusability. This same behavior exists offline when using any graphic capability (Shotwell or even just Nautilus file manager, if viewing graphics as thumbnails.

I realize this is kind of all over the place and all-inclusive, but although my experience USING Ubuntu goes on several years, it's been generally so trouble-free that I've not had to dig around under the hood much, and I'm kind of at a loss as to where to begin troubleshooting this mess. Would it be easier to just back-up and nuke/reinstall the OS?

Ubuntu Installation :: AMD64 10.10 Installer Doesn't Load

Apr 9, 2011

I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my custom built AMD Athlon FX-53 system to use as a web server. I downloaded the AMD64 desktop version and whenever I boot to the CD it'll go through the loading screen, bring up the install background and then the mouse cursor will appear. After that the mouse cursor keeps switching between the loading one and the regular one and it never fully loads the installer.

The system specs are:

AMD Athlon FX-53 @ 2.4 GHz (Stock)
1 Gb OCZ PC-3200 ram (2x512)
PNY Verto FX5200
Western Digital 40 Gb IDE hard drive
based off an Asus SK8V motherboard (Skate 5 to me...)

I was able to install the 32-bit version and I've tried 2 burns, one on a CD-RW and one on a CD-R and the checksum is the correct one based on whats posted on the site.

Ubuntu :: Grub Displays But Doesn't Load Menu Options

Dec 3, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 10.10, manually installed, on a Dell Studio 15 laptop, dual booting with Windows 7.While a few kids were playing nearby where I was working, one of the pillows they were playing with hit my laptop's screen and moved the screen's hinge backwards, applying pressure past where the hinge ends. This didn't seem to cause any physical harm to the computer, but I moved away from where they were playing, and in the process, shut the laptop, putting it into sleep mode. I opened the laptop and entered my password to unlock it. About half a second after entering my password and displaying the desktop and open windows, it brought up the password prompt again, as if I'd just opened my laptop up and removed it from standby, although I had not in fact touched it since I had entered my password a mere half second before. I thought that that was strange, and then attempted to continue my work. However, although the mouse worked fine, when I attempted to apply a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+2, which runs a 2-finger scroll script and has to be run every time I take the computer out of standby), Ubuntu didn't register it (I didn't touch the keyboard otherwise, although I should have checked whether it worked all =).

I tried it again, and it still did not apply the script. Then I thought, "Oh, the pillow must have knocked something out of whack. I'll restart." When I restarted, grub loaded as usual, but the timeout ("loading the primary in Xs." sort of thing) that it usually displays did not display this time. I didn't notice it at the time; I selected Ubuntu, and it appeared to be loading it, removing the grub menu, but then hung. I waited 5 minutes for the computer to display the login screen, but it did not, so I restarted again, thinking that it might just be something stupid. It didn't work again, hanging again. I tried this with both the most recent linux kernel and the second most recent kernel, neither of which worked. But what was interesting is that Windows 7, which is also on the grub menu, loaded and displayed perfectly, as did GRUB Invaders, a game that can be loaded directly from grub. After this little escapade, I thought something was just wrong in grub.cfg, and it somehow wasn't mapping the Ubuntu menu entries to the appropriate OS and kernel. So I loaded up a live CD, and attempted to look at the linux entries. These are the menu entries 10_linux, 00_header, and 20_linux_xen.

Ubuntu :: New Triple-booted Installation Doesn't Load Grub2

Aug 5, 2011

I'm attempting to triple boot Windows 7, Mac OS X, and Ubuntu 11.04 on non-Mac hardware. Chameleon is my primary bootloader, which is supposed to chainboot into grub2, but all I get when I choose the Linux boot option is a black screen with blinking cursor. If I try to boot Ubuntu while holding shift, I get the word GRUB, followed by a space and a blinking cursor. grub2 is installed to the Ubuntu partition, and attempts to reinstall it there or to the MBR from a LiveCD result in errors. The MBR and GPT partition tables are synchronized. How do I go about making Ubuntu bootable, without breaking my other two operating systems (or at least leaving them recoverable)?

I built a new desktop computer. The goal was to triple boot the system with Windows 7, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and Ubuntu 11.04. This endeavor has been significantly more complicated than I originally expected, but with the of a forum-goer at InsanelyMac.com, I've managed to get pretty far with a complex installation process. I've attempted to get Ubuntu running using two methods, neither of them achieving what I'm hoping. Both methods follow.

In the first method, I install Mac OS X using a specially designed install CD that boots into the Snow Leopard installation DVD. The disk is partitioned to have a FAT partition, followed by a Mac OS X journaled partition, ending in a second FAT partition. Mac OS is then installed to the second partition. The Windows boot CD is then used to format the first FAT partition as NTFS, which Windows 7 is then installed to.

As I'm sure you know, this installs Windows Boot Manager. Then I boot into OS X using the boot CD mentioned earlier, and install Chameleon, a bootloader specifically designed for Hackintosh systems, and (supposedly) capable of booting into all three operating systems I'm trying to work with. Finally, I divide and reformat the remaining FAT partition into an ext4 partition and a swap partition, and install Ubuntu to that ext4 partition, with the bootloader installed to the same partition. This will break the Windows bootloader, as now the MBR and GPT tables are no longer syncronized. Ubuntu is also unbootable; attempting to chainload into grub2 leaves me at a black screen with a blinking cursor. The former problem is solved by booting into a LiveCD and installing and running gptsync. Windows is now bootable, but Ubuntu remains in 'limbo'.

The second method I attempted is very similar, but deviates in the last few steps. After installing Windows, I instead install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, as I thought I might have fewer bootloader issues with that distribution (don't ask why; it was a lucky hunch). This breaks Windows Boot Manager, but this time grub2 throws me into the grub> prompt.I can boot into Ubuntu just fine using the set root/linux/initrd/boot commands, but my motherboard's Ethernet port is not detected by the OS, so I can't directly download and run gptsync. Once I do manage to run it, though, Windows is then also repaired.

Unfortunately, since I can't access the Internet, I can't do a distribution upgrade that way. Trying to upgrade from the recent release's LiveCD...well...doesn't upgrade, just overwrites. So I get the same black screen with blinking cursor problem. I've tried reinstalling grub2 through a LiveCD using grub-install both using the --root-directory flag and the chroot method.

Intel Core i7 (LGA1155)
Corsair VENGEANCE 4x4GB DDR3
