View 1 RepliesMy sysctl.conf in /etc isn't loaded at boot, it does however get parsed with the command # sysctl -p I believe this problem started when I got the 3.0.0 kernel just a few days ago. Does everyone has this problem? Then it's probably a bug.
My system:
Debian Testing (Wheezy)
3.0.0-1-amd64
up2date
im trying change my etc/sysctl.conf file but it won't let me as its read only. how to i change this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedHow do I make a change to this file? More specifically this is what I am trying to do.
Add the following line to /etc/sysctl.conf
vm.swappiness=10
Like in the subject. Does anyone knows how to do it without restart
View 1 Replies View RelatedOn a production Centos 5.3 system, I want to raise the hard & soft limits of open file handles from 1024 -> 8192 (not a "biggie", I'd think) Right now, "sysctl -a | grep file" shows fs.file-max=463144 (a default, I'd guess) I'm guessing file-max is the maximum number of open file handles on the system, vs the per-user limits seen with "ulimit -Hn" and "ulimit -Sn". Right? If so, I shouldn't think I'd have to touch this on a server with few users.
Also, after doing a lot of reading, I still don't understand the mentions of needing to also add: "session required pam_limits.so" to /etc/pam.d/loginor adding "session required /lib/security/$ISA/pam_limits.so" to /etc/pam.d/system-auth Maybe I've gotten off into the deep weeds in goggling about raising file handle limits.
Due to a change in how programs in Linux are allowed to use memory, before using SheepShaver you need to set a variable in the file /etc/sysctl.conf Add this line: vm.mmap_min_addr = 0 but when i add the line in my text editor it says i cant save

View 8 Replies View RelatedLast week I attempted to get "up to speed" with my Comcast cable connection... Ubuntu 9.10, Dell Vostro 400 desktop, Firefox 3.6.13... Comcast says I should have 12 Mbps connection... if I get 1.0 Mbps, I'm doing good... they just tested everything, and said everything is fine on their end. They use [URL] and connects to a server in Chicago, 60 miles away. That gets fantastic speeds, and it's a durn shame the internet doesn't store all its files there!! I use [URL] for my tests, and it uses a server in Dallas TX.
I go to my girlfriends house, and her AT&T DSL line has d/l speeds of 4.5 Mbps or better!!! She's running XP Pro on a Dell machine. So, started digging on the web and thru the forums, and found this:
[URL]
But, like ALL too many things, it's dated... it's from 2008... I've set my settings to what is there, and disabled ipv6 in Firefox. Hey, now, I'm sometimes up to 1.4 Mbps!! Also found this, but no date...
[URL]
Reading forums, I see that folks have said there is a network connection problem with 9.10... and then I see that others are saying the same thing about 10.04 and 10.10!! I have 10.10 on my laptop and had to fight to get its Atheos card to be recognized. Running some tests [URL] gives me weird results: Download 2.64 Mbps, Upload 4.12 Mbps. NOT what it should be. Similar results from testmy.net.
Dunno exactly what info is needed... Speedguide.net gives me results below, but I've tried changing numbers (says my RWIN is low) and nothing changes:
--------------------------------
TCP options string = 020405b40402080adf1dca100000000001030306
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
[code]....
So, today, find, once again, that I'm d'ling in the range of 90/KB/s (719 Kbps)... disgustingly slow. I go on my HP laptop and run the test, and it says 1.6 Mbps. So, desktop directly connected to router is not even 1 Mbps, and wireless connection is faster? Neither of which is close to what I should be getting...
Does anybody have experience with linux tuning. I`m realy interesting about sysctl.conf tuning settings for batch(3d rendering, phisycs simulations, etc.) servers. Does anybody has an experience with linux tuning - I mean memory and CPU settings for heavy loaded systems. What kind of settings You have in Your clusters ? I`m working with Red Hat Enterprise 5 x86_64.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Fedora (F13) for the first time, on a new HDD, to give myself a dual-boot system. So currently I have:
So, at the appropriate stage in the install menu, there is an option for where to install GRUB, and a drop-down to choose which drive is the primary BIOS boot drive.
However, in both cases, no other drive except my new sdc is visible. So, I can install GRUB to MBR of sdc, or to first sector of boot partition - but no option to put it to my primary boot drive MBR on sda.
Likewise, in the GRUB configuration page, if I go to Add another OS, the only option it gives me is my new Fedora install. It doesn't list the Vista OS on sda at all.
The result is that I can boot to either OS by changing the boot drive priority in BIOS.
I guess my question is this:
- is this expected behaviour from the installer, meaning that I'll need to configure GRUB manually somehow? (gulp ) or
- did I do something wrong in the install process? or
- is this some weird bug manifesting itself?
has anybody tried 10.10 on their PS3 (FW 3.15)? I first ran an update from 10.04 (which was working fine, including ext4 FS), and upon rebooting after the update, all I had was a black screen after PetitBoot. I then tried to do a clean install with the 10.10 PPC+PS3 Alternate CD, but same black screen after selecting any type of install from CD in PetitBoot. I then installed the OtherOS that's on the 10.10 CD (KBoot); same black screen. Went back to PetitBoot and tried the PS3 desktop 10.10 CD; same problem. I was almost ready to give up and reinstall 10.04 when I thought of using the "linux-old" option in PetitBoot. This loaded the newly upgraded Ubuntu 10.10 on my HD, with the difference that it's using kernel 2.6.32 instead of 2.6.35. This works fine. So here's my question (at last ): was the PS3 port of 10.10 tested by anyone before being pushed as a release on cdimage.ubuntu.com, or is there an incompatibility with kernel 2.6.35 that was never noticed, except for here where it didn't seem to go anywhere: [URL]? If I'm the only one left on earth with firmware 3.15 and interested in Ubuntu on PS3 at this point.

Something is hogging CPU cycles something awful; if I have more than a few tabs in Firefox open, it takes forever to scroll or reload, and the entire system just bogs almost to the point of unusability. This same behavior exists offline when using any graphic capability (Shotwell or even just Nautilus file manager, if viewing graphics as thumbnails.
I realize this is kind of all over the place and all-inclusive, but although my experience USING Ubuntu goes on several years, it's been generally so trouble-free that I've not had to dig around under the hood much, and I'm kind of at a loss as to where to begin troubleshooting this mess. Would it be easier to just back-up and nuke/reinstall the OS?
I just added a 3rd hard drive, but now when I boot my computer grub doesn't load at all, it just boots to Windows. I've tried holding down Shift, and I've tried holding down ESC but it didn't work. I believe I have grub2.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Fedora 12 system that I am trying to configure with 3 IP addresses on one NIC card. I created scripts for each of the connections I want in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ and they are called ifcfg-eth0, ifcfg-eth0:1, ifcfg-eth0:2. If I run /sbin/services network restart it configures everything as I would like. When I restart the computer the only device configured is eth0 and it is set to DHCP. If I run the script again everything works. What am I missing to make this change persistent?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed the software for my APC UPS on my SUSE 11.2 machine. After some work I finally got it work except I have to go and start it each time I reboot. It is supposed to load automatically, but somehow mine doesn't. If I go to a command prompt as SU and type "apcupsd start" and then go look at the GUI everything shows up fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a dual-booting system with Windows 7 and Opensuse 11.2. I had a few other random kernels so I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to remove them. This was fine after a reboot, then I went to YaST and changed the default boot partition to Windows, because I had edited the MBR and put Windows above the other boot partitions, YaST changed "default" to 0.
Now after a restart the Boot Loader doesn't appear, I just have a flashing cursor. When I try to boot from an OpenSuse installation disc and try repair the Repair Kernel loads but freezes on the OpenSuse splash screen. I've heard this is due to the fact I have an ATI Radeon card, if I hold shift during the CD load to prevent the graphical interface of the CD loading. I can type to boot "rescue" but it freezes on "starting udev...". Essentially I just need to be able to edit menu.lst back to the backup I made or change the "default" value back to 1.
Using tips provided in the "Sticky" posts, I have identified my wireless device -- BCM4322 -- and installed the necessary firmware and drivers. The device appears in Network Manager until system reboot, at which time the "ssd" driver module is loaded instead. After each boot I must execute the following commands to remove ssd and load the Broadcom driver:
rmmod ssb
modprobe lib80211
modprobe wl
The Broadcom README file provides directions to load the correct module automatically, but the commands appear to be incompatible with openSUSE 11.4. I'm happy to provide additional detail if needed
When i open one of the web browsers i use and try to load a web site it's taking to long to respond and sometimes it doesnt load the website at all. I have tried with firefox, epiphany, opera with all the same results. I am sure that this is not a problem with my internet connection because i don't have these problems with windows. Also the network manager connection settings are correct
I also tried choosing the old kernel(2.6.32.24) to boot from but no success. The problem is the same as if i am using the 2.6.32.25 kernel. The strange thing is that i can download packages from synaptic with full speed. Last think.I have recently downloaded the recommended updates from the update manager but i don't remember what are the things that where updated.
I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:

What do I need to do to make GRUB load again upon booting?
I need to create .conf and .load files for php. PHP is installed and I've verified PHP with

Is there boilerplate available for creating the .load and .conf files? I am having trouble finding it in what's been installed.
I've used this video conferencing web app on Windows 7 and it works perfectly. [URL] But I'm having flash problems. Flash doesn't load and the light at my webcam doesn't switch on at all. Things to note:Cheese works so I know my webcam in Ubuntu is functional. I've tried purging the flash plugin and reinstalling it. It doesn't work on Chrome and Firefox so it's definitely only a flash problem. I'm not using any medication so I know it isn't me just imagining it. EDIT: I checked out [URL] Here's a screenshot: [URL] I'll check back later, Charlie the Unicorn just rang my doorbell and invited me to tea on the magic hot air balloon. Definitely not hallucinating. Definitely. Definitely.

A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode. That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.
My network works before but now it has follow issue, when I ping google.com, I got Quote:
ping: unknown host google.com but my network still works partially because I can still connect to a DNS listed in my /etc/resolv.conf to get host google.com's ip adress by Quote:
host -t a google.com ip.of.one.dns and then I ping the returned IP result 66.249.89.104, the ping works fine. the issue is that I can't connect to Internet, what I can remember is that I ever removed /etc/resolv.conf and this file was created again by network-manager, and I already verified the two dns IPs listed in the resolv.conf are both correct and works fine with command host.
I'm running Kubuntu 11.04 on a laptop with dual monitor setup. I have Nvidia graphics card and I've successfully configured TwinView for the monitors. However, after saving the settings to xorg.conf (using the nvidia-settings application) X should use both monitors after boot, but only the main monitor is used. I first thought that X didn't read xorg.conf at all, but when I put some illegal statements into the file X wouldn't start and gave an error about the illegal statements. It is thus clear that X does read the file, but it just doesn't seem to use the settings in it.
