recently i started this thread on natty narwhal testing but that sub-forum is closed and still i have the problem,i was beta 1 and update frequently,and each time i did that there were about 23 MB download for updating lists,now when i do that there is only 17.7 KB of download,this means the other lists are finished and I'm on final release or my lists are crashed?I've tried

View 5 Replies View RelatedI seem to have stumbled on a problem regarding internet connectivity. My web browser (Firefox or any other web browsers) can't completely load the desired webpages like yahoo.com or even google.com.But as I read different blogs in this forum, I have convinced myself that there is an internet connection.= when I ping different websites, Iseem to get good responses from those sites. Only when I need to browse the webpage do get no results.= ifconfig seems to respond well enough.= even "route" shows the IP my router/gateway correctly. The problem , I think, lies on the proxy settings or the DSN.

I have a fast machine (8 core 3.4ghz, 4GB RAM, 64bit FC15) everything else graphics wise is smooth and sexy but with inkscape try and zoom in with NO image loaded and it tic, tic, tic, jerky movements etc
Load an image and it is completely unusable, and has actually crashed my machine a couple of times when i was trying to work with a 5MB SVG file
When i open one of the web browsers i use and try to load a web site it's taking to long to respond and sometimes it doesnt load the website at all. I have tried with firefox,epiphany,opera with all the same results. I am sure that this is not a problem with my internet connection because i don't have these problems with windows.Also the network manager connection settings are correct
I also tried choosing the old kernel(2.6.32.24) to boot from but no success.The problem is the same as if i am using the 2.6.32.25 kernel. The strange thing is that i can download packages from synaptic with full speed. Last think.I have recently downloaded the recommended updates from the update manager but i don't remember what are the things that where updated.

Since the upgrade, I've noticed some unexplainable behavior: The load average is consistently 0.5 - 1.75 when my PC is completely idle (99% according to top). No processes are in the D (I/O) state, and I have no Zombie processes. This happens on a fresh boot, every time. It gets worse and less worse, and bounces from unusable (cursor stops moving as I type in the terminal, to actually losing keystrokes at times). I'm wondering if anybody else is experiencing similar issues, or knows of a (the) kernel bug which is causing this behavior? Actively researching the issue. I am using BSNL WLL (Wireless Local Loop) on my Fedora system to connect to the internet My modem is Huawei ETS-1201, I use wvdial The problem is that, on every linux distribution I tried, Webpages dont load or load incompletely randomly This happens most during peak net traffic. I tried to edit the /etc/ppp/options file to set my MTU and MRU to 576
But, It does not seem to be working. There is no such problem on Windows and I can connect flawlessly I takes several retries to connect to a site. I sometimes become frustrated with this and switch to Windows But as you all know, Windows is not the right OS for people who want more from their computers.

I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:

I've used this video conferencing web app on Windows 7 and it works perfectly. [URL] But I'm having flash problems. Flash doesn't load and the light at my webcam doesn't switch on at all. Things to note:Cheese works so I know my webcam in Ubuntu is functional. I've tried purging the flash plugin and reinstalling it. It doesn't work on Chrome and Firefox so it's definitely only a flash problem. I'm not using any medication so I know it isn't me just imagining it. View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been having a problem on my AMD based machine, 4cpu, gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h Mobo, 8GB mem, two 2 terabyte Sata HDs.One thing I've found is that any kernel after 2.6.32-17 has a randomness at boot time whether the system will completely boot or not.
For instance just today I downloaded and installed 2.6.32-24
It fails to boot (I've tried cold boot, warm boot).Running its repair also fails to completely boot.My experience is that if I keep trying it "may" eventually boot but I believe there was some change after 2.6.32-17-generic that's causing the problem.Because as with 2.6.32.23... which also fails to complete bootup many times... eventually my guess is that 2.6.32.24 will also boot "sometimes".But why does 2.6.32.17 always boot for me? Something changed and its not my setup.
Upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 Thursday night. My internet was working perfectly under 9.10, but when I turn my comp on friday morning, my internet speed has been crippled to almost a halt.
In short, I get about 25 kb/s average speed, when it doesn't completely drop me. Under 9.10, I had 250+ kb/s. Why is this? I figure it has to be a bug, but is there any way to fix it? It's rendering my ubuntu install completely useless. I'm lucky I got my windows partition fixed, or else my laptop would be more or less a paperweight for a while. This is on the same laptop by the way, same internet connection.
Ubuntu Software upgrades indicated that there were some Firefox updates available. While updating, computer screen went blank and froze up. I manually shutdown and after restarting, Ubuntu no longer loads. It goes through some steps but then it goes to a login/password prompt. After putting in a login and password it takes me to, what I think is "Terminal".
I am a newbie, but I love to learn. I'm reading the Pocket Guide right now. I have many questions. What can I do at the "Terminal" prompt? An even better question is: When I have a problem after an install or update, can I do a "recovery" to before the install/update? If I continue to have problems, is there a way to recover the OS without losing saved data?
I'm hoping that I will learn a lot from the Pocket guide. I think that Ubuntu is going to be the OS of the future.
Why does "Ubuntu" still come up as a misspelled word in this text box?
During a software update the machine froze for a long time, I had no choice but to hard-crash (hold the power button to shutdown) starting up again I can get to the login screen and log in but there is no desktop environment visible, just a mouse pointer (which can be moved about) on a blank screen. I'm using Karmic Koala with Gnome (I am relatively new to Linux, I am essentially using the default package)

TO double check that it just was not skype I opened up Cheese the webcam picture application and it said "no device" found.The only thing I have really changed on my computer since I last skyped were just system updates so something broke in it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got Ubuntu 10.10 installed. Unfortunately, my wireless doesnt work. I'm connected to my router, but web pages wont load.
I thought to myself, maybe Ubuntu needs to update. So I lugged my computer out to the router itself and okugged my computer in. I went into update manager and let it do its thing. It was PAINFULLY slow. I had a less than 100 b/s. But I let it do its thing. After all 200 Mb's were done, which took a couple hours, I rebooted my system. Now, I cant even connect to my wireless and the internet symbol (the wireless bars thing in the top right) is gone.
1) How can I get my wireless to work?
2) How do I get the wireless button back?
I ran Update Manager and installed updates. Now flash video and other things with flash content wont work.
To give one example. I go to a web I use frequently and the following message is displayed at the top: "Additional plug-ins are required to display media on this page"
I click on "install mising plug-ins" and select Flash Player-installer. Bu then it tells me it's already installed! This has only happened since last night when I installed the updates!
I have Debian server and have installed Ddclient! It updates IP address when I restart the Ddclient but when I restart the router and my IP changes but the Ddclient does not updates the IP.!

I have a new install of Karmic on my system with a flyvideo 3000 tv card installed. My problem is that it doesn't find any radio channels and the input channel is completely wrong. I don't have any sound on gnomeradio and can't find the config files to change the input channel. The only input option available to me is dig1 - can anyone point me in the right direction?
I have already read the Howto for this tv card and changed the device to radio0 in the setup. I have setup tvtime perfectly with sound channel as well as with a 5.1 surround configuration. I am missing my favourite radio channel. and I want to get rid of my windows installations once and for all! Update: I did a system update and some things have changed: the radio tower graphic on gnomeradio is now green (I assume it is getting a signal) but no sound yet.
After the last updates (in which there was also the 2.6.35.28 kernel) my audio isn't working anymore. When i open an audio file, it goes foreward with steps like 5 secondos and i can't listen nothing. Videos i can see, but with no audio, and ..... videos go at like 2x speed (and also here no audio). I tried booting with the 2.6.35.27 kernel, but doesn't change anything.

I'm posting on behalf of my friend who is very happy with his Ubuntu installation on his laptop.
However, he has one problem, and that is sometimes GDM doesn't load, and Ubuntu boots to a text-based login.
When this happens, he power-cycles the machine and more often than not it will work.
He is dual-booting with Windows XP.
Update manager pops up telling me there are new updates, but clicking on the 'Install Updates' button does nothing.However, if I click on Settings, then just close the settings dialog,it then says 'Starting Update Manager' and when that finished, the 'Install Updates' will work, but I have to do this every time I restart the computer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAs a normal user I have activated the functions of the Quit applet, i.e. Logout, Shutdown and Restart are active buttons. I am able to restart or shutdown, no problems. But when I use the Logout button I don't get logged out, just returned to the login shell & I am still logged in as my user. I don't have a display manager installed and I do NOT want to use a display manager such as XDM or GDM. How do I get the Logout button to actually logout the user? It appears I am only getting logged out of the x-session, but I want complete logout.

When I try to get the client going, it just connects to my account, checks for updates, verifyies data, and then starts over. It will keep doing that until I end the program, and never opens so I have access to my games.
I don't know if it is useful or not, but here is a picture I took of terminal I ran steam from (I don't know how to do a screen capture in linux).
Installed version are:openSuse 11.2KDE 4.4.4After installing some upates does my firefox will not starts anymore. And I have no idea why. It's seems not really a problem with firefox itself, because some other programs can't be started as well. Such as eclipse or Googles ChromeIt's appears only for few secounds the program in the task bar, and disappears then. Is there some log file or something like this, there I could see what happens in the start procedure of the firefox program

I can see that in yum-updatesd configuration i can use smtp_server to rely mail notifications as per below outputs from man pages smtp_server SMTP server to use when sending mail, host or a hostort string. Defaults to localhost:25. The problem that this option doesn't work at all and it rely into the local MTA not the one set on the smtp_server
