Ubuntu :: Future Of Gnome 2 (Bugs Exist Forever?)

Apr 12, 2011

One of the things I dislike about gnome is the fact that some bugs seem to exist forever, eloquently described here fore example: [URL]. Now, that gnome 3 is there; I am wondering: should I expect that there will much work on the 2.x side? Or will more and more bugs go "fixed with gnome3"? Is this a realistic thought?

The first launched program that uses sound, "takes over" the sound or smth, anyway, all programs, started next, just not play sound at all. The only solution is to close all programs using sound and start one I need to "listen". When I get into sound settings menu and see the list of programs using sound, I see just one started first.

Fedora :: Lyx Bugs Or Window Manager Bugs?

Jun 30, 2011

I find that the FC 15 Xfce spin will save the user's current session except that it doesn't save what is being done with the Lyx editor. Under FC 15 Gnome 3, I found that after I added the minimize-maximize-close buttons to the top of windows, that some of the windows in Lyx (such as the one that appears for View as DVIPS) didn't respond to those buttons. (I don't remember whether Gnome 3 saved the Lyx session and I've gotten rid of Gnome 3 now.)

Ubuntu :: Save Session For Future Logins?

Jan 16, 2010

I have a few questions related to the 'Save Session for Future Login' option you can check (and is checked by default) when you go to shutdown/restart/etc.

1) What exactly does checking this option and shutdown/restarting do?

2) Is there any way to have it unchecked by default?

3) Is there any way to completely remove the option?

If it does not, what is the best way to clone the windows 7 install and can I put it on a usb to boot and install from in the future?

I downloaded a file enclosed in 58 rar parts and extracted them. I was looking for a way which would enable autodelete of all rar-archives after the extraction so I don't have to clean the mess up later. I hear there is some option in command line arguments but that doesn't work with split archives. Is there a way in GUI? Some option maybe, which I could check to make all the future extractions in par with autodelete feature?

Ubuntu Installation :: Downloading Applications For Future Install?

I'm going round everyone I know installing Ubuntu on their computers whether they like it or not, and I must say so far they all like it except. I have to spend 5 hours downloading and installing all the software they need to make their system run 'as good as windows'.

I really need a whole bunch of popular programmes to put on a disk and install as I go. I know Ubuntu saves the downloads in a repository on the hard drive, but looking at it I am sometimes at a loss as to which folders contain which downloads, then there is the problem of multiple folders for one programme etc.or point me in the direction of a zipped up file with all the programmes a normal user might need.

Fedora :: NTP Time Keeps Drifting Into The Future?

Jan 25, 2011

I have a F14 laptop being used as a music server. For some reason the clock time runs fast and slowly drifts forward about 5 minutes/day.

ntpd is running. The ntpd.conf is pretty much F14 out of the box and the same as my other F14 instances that do not exhibit this problem. If I restart ntpd, it syncs up the time, but then the time slips until the ntpd seems to give up.

Initially ntpd reports it is synched, but then over time it reports being unsynchronized.

Shortly after restart:

Code:
ntpdc> sysinfo
system peer: w1-wdc.ipv4.got-root.me.uk
system peer mode: client
leap indicator: 11
stratum: 4

[Code]....

The problem is that each time I make new site, and user1 wants to upload (through ftp) files to /home/www/newsite I need to redo the the above command in order to be enable user1 to upload. Not only this, I need to rework permissions (744 for folders and 644 for files), otherwise the newsite throws permission errors message.

Ubuntu One :: Synchronizing Forever But Nothing Happens?

Oct 23, 2010

Am I the only person who can't get ubuntu one working properly?1) if I right-click a folder and ask to synchronize it to ubuntu one, there is absolutely no feedback at all (nothing seems to be synchronized, no icons are added to the folder, no progress bar, nothing).2) if I open the Ubuntu one preferences, it states "synchronizing in progress", and it keeps doing that. again; no progress, no icons, no nothing.Disconnecting reconnecting doesn't seem to matter.Rebooting (I know, I was desperate..) doesn't seem to matter. How do you guys manage to use this. I mean, the interface of ubuntu one is pretty clean, so there is not much to configure, which is good, if it would work out of the box .

Ubuntu :: Various Bugs After Unlocking?

Mar 3, 2010

I am running the x64 version of Ubuntu 9.10. For the past 2 days(haven't installed any new programs within the same time frame). I've started to encounter problems after I lock my computer, (ctrl+alt+l), then come back and unlock it. After unlocking, I am unable to open any programs.

Attempts to open programs include: panel icon buttons, application menu buttons(including opening nautilus through the places menu), alt+F2, and using gnome-do. I also can't use any of the buttons in the user menu to the far right to log off or shut down the computer and am forced to hold the power button to restart my laptop. I am able to use programs that are already open with no problems.

Also, If i lock the laptop again, the screen darkens as expected, except, when i move the mouse to bring up the login dialog all i see is short flickers of my mouse as it moves around a black screen.

My most recent synaptic log includes:

Quote:

Commit Log for Sat Feb 27 17:09:49 2010
Upgraded the following packages:
foomatic-filters (4.0.3-0ubuntu2.1) to 4.0.3-0ubuntu2.2

Ubuntu :: Lots Of Bugs Going On With 10.04?

May 20, 2010

Recently while at school, my trackpad stopped working completely. When I log out to my login screen it works, and as well as kde. I use compiz btw in gnome.[SOLVED I THINK] --> My boot splash doesn't show up until its fully loaded and won't show in the correct resolution.Every so often, the UI flips out and won't let me click menus or text fields or use my keyboard at all.

The trackpad is a setting i bet. BUT I looked everywhere for a setting that is making it not work.[SOLVED I THINK] --> The splash is ok, I'm not worried about it, but I wished it looked nicer on my computer D:The UI freak out is annoying and trouble some as it happens randomly in use.

I am on a laptop:

HP Pavilion dv9000
Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo 1.73GHz
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600
2GB of memory

ps - I am not a fan of HP, Intel, or NVIDIA, this laptop was free so not complaining about not having AMD or ATi or another laptop brand

General :: How To Fix These Two Ubuntu 10.04 Bugs

Aug 17, 2010

1. Bug one. For some strange reason, my mouse is red only when hovering over a firefox window. All the other time, its white. I have tried to use the built in cursor changer thing, and it seems only capable of changing the cursor for the desktop. Not this strange, magical red firefox cursor. It starts to mess with ya.2. Not really a bug I guess, just a mild annoyance. In windows 7, you have a good deal of play when it comes to where you want to position your icons on the desktop. Not so with Ubuntu 10.04. Its more like windows 95 when it comes to that. Is there some way to solve this? You have like an inch between places you can move icons to. Makes the desktop look ugly, and I would just feel more at home if I could position them correctly. The pic is an accurate representation of this. On the far left, that is as far as the icons can go. And if you want them near each other, they have to sit way too close, or way too far apart. (oh and that pic was before I attempted to change the cursor lol. Now its white when not hovering over FF, red when over FF. Now I'm stuck in that configuration lol)

Ubuntu :: Filesystem Manager Goes Forever?

Jul 4, 2010

I have a shared network folder on my server called torrents. It is a folder that I drop .torrent files into to start automatic downloading. When I navigated there from my Ubuntu PC (10.4) I was provided a nice shortcut on my desktop. I have no idea when the problem started but after I rebooted and logged in I noticed a "thing" on my desktop.

torrents on peter.volume <- peter is my server name. Places -> x-nautilus-desktop:///torrents on peter.volume <-also showing up.

I cannot delete I get The file is an unkown type.

Now if I navigate Places -> Network -> Peter (server) I can see the folder "torrents" If I click the folder to open I get a never ending number of "starting file manager" windows.

The other folders work just fine, its just this one.
