Ubuntu :: Lots Of Bugs Going On With 10.04?

May 20, 2010

Recently while at school, my trackpad stopped working completely. When I log out to my login screen it works, and as well as kde. I use compiz btw in gnome.[SOLVED I THINK] --> My boot splash doesn't show up until its fully loaded and won't show in the correct resolution.Every so often, the UI flips out and won't let me click menus or text fields or use my keyboard at all.

The trackpad is a setting i bet. BUT I looked everywhere for a setting that is making it not work.[SOLVED I THINK] --> The splash is ok, I'm not worried about it, but I wished it looked nicer on my computer D:The UI freak out is annoying and trouble some as it happens randomly in use.

I am on a laptop:

HP Pavilion dv9000
Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo 1.73GHz
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600
2GB of memory

ps - I am not a fan of HP, Intel, or NVIDIA, this laptop was free so not complaining about not having AMD or ATi or another laptop brand

Ubuntu :: Copying Lots And Lots Of Data (and Preserving Emblems)?

Oct 26, 2010

I am currently in the process of moving around 20TB of data from one server to another. Security is not a concern, since the data are freely available to anyone on our network anyway. There are a couple of things that I'm trying to decide on:

(1) protocol choice

Of all the choices I have--nfs, ftp, scp, rsync, samba--has anyone done any benchmarking to show which would be the fastest/most robust transfer protocol? I know nfs has slow write speeds for synchronous transfers. Asynchronous would be faster, but less robust. I'm leaning toward rsync since it performs md5sums to confirm the file transfers. (Remember if there's a 1 in a billion chance that a byte will get corrupted, then I'll have 20,000 corrupt bytes in the transfer.)

(2) Nautilus emblems

We use emblems in Nautilus to categorize files. The old and the new server have the same directory structure. Is there any way to copy the Nautilus emblems from the old server to the new server. What I want is that if a user had marked a particular file with a star on the old server, then that file would be marked with a star on the new server when he/she logs in.

Fedora :: Lyx Bugs Or Window Manager Bugs?

Jun 30, 2011

I find that the FC 15 Xfce spin will save the user's current session except that it doesn't save what is being done with the Lyx editor. Under FC 15 Gnome 3, I found that after I added the minimize-maximize-close buttons to the top of windows, that some of the windows in Lyx (such as the one that appears for View as DVIPS) didn't respond to those buttons. (I don't remember whether Gnome 3 saved the Lyx session and I've gotten rid of Gnome 3 now.)

Ubuntu :: Evolution Using Lots Of Memory On 10.10

Jan 17, 2011

I upgraded to 10.10 a few months ago. All was well until a week or so ago, my PC was incredibly slow to respond to anything - mouse clicks, etc. After investigating, I found Evolution using 90% of my RAM - I have 4G. I restarted the PC, started up Evolution and everything was better for a very short while. I then found Evolution using 2Gb+ again later that day. I have noticed that immediately upon startup of Evolution, watching top, evolution uses 900Mb+ Virt and 450+Mb Res. If I open a single email, it jumps to 1300+ Virt, 500+ Res. The more I read a few more emails, the more it jumps.

I have updated everything possible via Synaptic. I only have a handful of accounts - probably 3 POP3 that download to local folders, and about 5 IMAP (GMail) based ones. Nothing excessive IMHO. Now, Evolution is basically useless. All I can do is open it, check email, and close it as soon as possible. I'd rather not switch to another email client - I did that back in 10.04 when I switched off Thunderbird in favor of Evolution because of all the Evolution integration in Ubuntu/Gnome.

Ubuntu :: Installing Lots Of New Users At A Distance?

Apr 22, 2010

I want to install Ubuntu on many different new user's systems from a distance. I am looking for the simplest cleanest way to pull this off. These systems will only boot Ubuntu....no dual boot systems. Plus, I need a way to accommodate different size Hard drives such that the entire hard drive is used. There will be a novice computer user on site who can insert a cd or dvd for me and boot the machine.

Ubuntu :: Lots Of Errors / Python2.6 / Import CommandNotFound?

Jan 13, 2010

When executing different programs varying from the Ubuntu Software Manager to pstotxt and lots of other programs I get tons of errors that have to do with Python2.6, whatever it is. I think it got corrupted since my netbook turned of while installing some (Dutch) language packs. The smaller problem, is that the language packs failed to install properly, and I can see some Dutch sentences between the English ones sometimes...The major prolem, is that somehow a lot of programs won't work anymore, mainly terminal programs. pstotxt is one of any examples. Installing software doesn't always work because of these errors.

This is the output when I want to use pstotxt to convert a .pdf to .txt file:

Code:

Ubuntu :: Wine Gives Lots Of Errors And Runs Really Slowly?

Jan 17, 2010

I try to do anything in wine, including winecfg, I get a lot of errors, and the program runs really slowly. Here are the errors

Code:
fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation (nil) 1 (nil) 0
fixme:win:RegisterDeviceNotificationA (hwnd=0x147f30, filter=0x84e9e4,flags=0x00000001),
returns a fake device notification handle!

I get this error for every program, so I do not think it is an error with the program. If fixing this will change anything like making it faster any help would be appreciated. Oh, I also can only run a few programs. I can't run things like WMP or itunes, and I think this may be the cause.

Ubuntu Servers :: Filesystem Lots Of Small Files?

Feb 15, 2010

i have a question about the best choice for a filesystem: We have in our company a productive webserver running debian with nginx webserver to serve images. The number is about 15 million, they are around 2kb or 3kb of size each and they are stored under some subdir in /home with a hashed subdirectory tree which is 2 leves deep. the images are copied with nfs from some other machine time to time. We get high load when this copying is running. Currently we are using ext3, and considering moving to jfs, cause its relativly low load impact, but i am still courios about the performance. I think serving lots of images is often practiced thing, so i would be interested what others are using as filesystem in this scenario, or if someone could make a recommendation for our case.

Ubuntu :: Moving Lots Of Files Around - Nautilus Freezes?

Jan 26, 2011

I use nautilus and its awful. The only good thing are the tabs and the bookmarks on the cons:

* it freezes now and then when moving lots of files.

* Slow to navigate while large amounts of data are moving or displaying.

* Slow presenting of files where there are a lot of them (it should only render whatever is in screen and maybe render a properly sized navigation bar. Anything else shouldnt freeze the client. Render at its once pace if at all. I dont move the scroll bar it shouldnt freeze

* It doesnt queue (meaning it moves everything at the same time instead of queueing stuff, what makes moving stuff take longer) .

Ubuntu :: Various Bugs After Unlocking?

Mar 3, 2010

I am running the x64 version of Ubuntu 9.10. For the past 2 days(haven't installed any new programs within the same time frame). I've started to encounter problems after I lock my computer, (ctrl+alt+l), then come back and unlock it. After unlocking, I am unable to open any programs.

Attempts to open programs include: panel icon buttons, application menu buttons(including opening nautilus through the places menu), alt+F2, and using gnome-do. I also can't use any of the buttons in the user menu to the far right to log off or shut down the computer and am forced to hold the power button to restart my laptop. I am able to use programs that are already open with no problems.

Also, If i lock the laptop again, the screen darkens as expected, except, when i move the mouse to bring up the login dialog all i see is short flickers of my mouse as it moves around a black screen.

My most recent synaptic log includes:

General :: How To Fix These Two Ubuntu 10.04 Bugs

Aug 17, 2010

1. Bug one. For some strange reason, my mouse is red only when hovering over a firefox window. All the other time, its white. I have tried to use the built in cursor changer thing, and it seems only capable of changing the cursor for the desktop. Not this strange, magical red firefox cursor. It starts to mess with ya.2. Not really a bug I guess, just a mild annoyance. In windows 7, you have a good deal of play when it comes to where you want to position your icons on the desktop. Not so with Ubuntu 10.04. Its more like windows 95 when it comes to that. Is there some way to solve this? You have like an inch between places you can move icons to. Makes the desktop look ugly, and I would just feel more at home if I could position them correctly. The pic is an accurate representation of this. On the far left, that is as far as the icons can go. And if you want them near each other, they have to sit way too close, or way too far apart. (oh and that pic was before I attempted to change the cursor lol. Now its white when not hovering over FF, red when over FF. Now I'm stuck in that configuration lol)

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing On A Dual-boot With Lots Of DOS Volumes?

Feb 9, 2010

I have a DOS/Linux dual-boot system. After recently replacing the original motherboard (an Elitegroup P6VEM3, of all things!) with a salvaged Dell D300 motherboard, I'm preparing to replace the Red Hat 8 currently installed with a Ubuntu live CD that I've had for some time (but that wouldn't work at all on the old motherboard, for some reason) I have a question about the "partitioner" stage of the installer: I don't know what to do with my 5 DOS volumes. My hard drive is partitioned as follows (from the partitioner's report when I select manual mode; annotations in parentheses):

Ubuntu Networking :: Philips SNU5600 Disconnects If Uploading Lots Of Data To NAS

Mar 19, 2011

I have a Philips SNU5600 wifi dongle. My wifi network isn't particularly strong, but it has always been reliable, even when downloading and uploading large files such as ISOs to the internet.

I recently bought a NAS, and when I run rsync or try and copy a large file (eg 6 gigs) to the NAS, the connection will eventually fail.

The error message in /var/log/debug is:

Code:

I have read elsewhere that this is a problem with the Minstrel algorithm, so I have tried disabling that by creating /etc/modprobe.d/80211.conf with the following line in it:

Code:

And when I reboot, I am able to run "cat /sys/module/mac80211/parameters/ieee80211_default_rc_algo" and the output is "pid".

However, in my /var/log/debug, there is still the line:

Code:

Here is the output from a few other commands for extra information:

Code:

Code:

Code:

Code:

- The problem has only been around since I got the NAS, and only happens when copying files TO the NAS. Downloading/uploading to internet doesn't cause the same problem.
- This problem happens on two machines both with the same wifi dongle.
- This problem doesn't happen on a laptop running the Intel iwl3945 driver, nor with machines connected via cables, so it is not the NAS which is at fault.

How to get a stable connection when backing up?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Various Video Bugs In Lucid?

Jun 27, 2010

I did a clean install of Lucid, and almost everything video related is a little sluggish. First of all, Compiz is really slow compared to how it was in Karmic.
I don't even use window animations, just the Scale and a couple other effects, like desktop cube. Scale is really slow, and sometimes it doesn't work. I have to start compiz again to get it working. Desktop cube actually froze a couple of times half way through a rotation. Rotating the cube is much slower as well.

Also, I've been having a lot of trouble with HD video playback. It's not just the 100% CPU load that's bugging me, but every 3-4 minutes the playback skips frames, and the image becomes all glitchy.

Flash playback also uses a lot of CPU, I can't even watch ..... videos in fullscreen most of the time. And I'm always opting for the lowest quality possible btw.

I have a dual core AMD CPU and 8600GT nvidia graphics card, so it's not a hardware issue.

My desktop is used as my ftp server, music/network storage, and for syncing my iPod with iTunes. The only thing that is keeping me from totally reinstalling the OS on that computer is iTunes. I know there are tons of applications out there that will sync your music to your iPod however I want to still be able to use itunesu and some other features in iTunes. My plan is to run a *nix os but have xp running in virtual box for iTunes. Has anyone else done this and if you have is it a huge pain? Is there a better way to go about what I'm trying to do? I have tried to get the newer iTunes installers to work with wine but I haven't gotten it to work yet. I get errors and the errors are reported bugs on winehq.

Ubuntu :: [Natty] Nasty Bugs After Minimizing / Fix It?

Apr 13, 2011

I'm on the Ubuntu Natty Narwhal and on a netbook. Hardware details are given on the signature.

Well, I'm trying to learn how to use Unity, but this bug is freaking me out. When I minimize any window, the menus are kept on the top bar 'till I click on anything else (or on the desktop), also I can't recover the window till I click on anything else (It's like it haven't been minimized, just hidden).
After restoring the window, if I try to maximize, the window borders will be maximized, but the actual window won't. I'll be attaching pictures for better understanding.
Also, if I try to un-maximize, the Close-Minimize-Maximize and the menus will be unavailable (Visible, but like they didn't exist, cant even move the window around)

If I maximize and THEN minimize, then it goes crazy. When I recover the screen, it will look ok, but if I un-maximize, there'll be a huge ugly black border around the window that follows it, no matter where I push it around.

Couldn't find anything related. I'm using the Natty Beta 1 (installed yesterday thru updates). I'm also using the latest Intel drivers (from intellinuxgraphics.org). Everything else works fine.

Hope there's a fix out there. Should I fill a bug report?

I tried restarting and it didn't change. I don't even have any way to bring up the system settings window, or to bring up terminal without restarting to command line mode.
