I am looking to do just as the title says. If I no longer want to keep ubuntu say a year from now. Will i be able to uninstall or possibly delete the partion with ubuntu on it without wiping out windows? I ask because I am not sure of how much space I would like to partition, this way I could always come back delete it and then reinstall it to the size I wish

But when I did that I assumed that ubuntu would get included in my "wiping". But of course...it's still there. Now that odd ubuntu uninstall option which was actually for some strange odd reason in the vista/control panel/uninstall options is no longer available. So how to uninstall ubuntu? View 7 Replies View RelatedRecently, my Mint update informed me it had an upgraded kernel version of Mint 9 and asked did I want to upgrade. Me, not being an old hand at things Linux, upgraded. Instead of overwriting the older version, it put the upgraded version of Mint 9 BESIDE the older one. So now I have, actually, 4 versions of Mint 9 on my PC,(generic plus recovery mode for each) which is dual booted with Vista Home Premium.
I don't want this. I have had weird problems and hiccups since I upgraded. I want to get rid of the newer kernel version and use only the older one. How do I uninstall the upgraded version of Mint 9? I have tried to boot into the older version, but there is no desktop and I have to type on the boot screen and in the terminal. It wants commands I don't know how to give. How do I restore my older version of Mint 9?
I just want one version on my PC in the dual boot with Windows Vista. Can someone tell me how to accomplish this? If you give me terminal commands, please make sure they are copy and paste ready. lol.
If uninstalling involves deleting partitions and doing a manual partitioning and formatting, I'll need easy instructions for that also.
I think the title says it all really - I've installed Mint onto a Acer aspire 5315 laptop. Its a dual boot system using Vista Basic. Grub works perfectly and to be honest Mint is great. really enjoying playing and learning. My problem is that the laptop overheats when using Mint - the cpu fan doesn't cut in and the laptop shuts down to protect the system. According to a swift google this seems to occur with mint (possibly particularly with Acer's) and maybe with other distro's too. However I'd like to keep trying to see if i can find one that works.
So my rather obvious newbie question is can I just get another distro dvd and install this onto the partition containing mint thus deleting the previous install? If I did this would Grub show the new distro ok or would it keep searching for Mint. I have a back up so if all else fails I can reinstall everything but that will have to wait till I get home
I want too create a dual boot Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) and Ubuntu (64bit). how to do this but I want something special. The boot loader appear. Will be only one password field, no OS names. If I introduce a password will boot in Linux, if I introduce another password will boot in Ubuntu. My buddy has a computer with a problem and hes asked me to see if I can retrieve the data documents from the computer. The subject computer is a COMPAQ PRESARIO SR5030NX with a Pentium 4 cpu, 3.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, running Windows Vista Home Basic.
His goal was to create a dual boot computer UBUNTU and Vista. What he did was to install UBUNTU, partitioning the computer in two partitions. The computer is now giving an error code of 21 when GRUB Loader starts up. Is there a restore disk or some kind of utility that can undo what was done to the computer. He has no backup disk.
I tried Recovery Commander Ver. 3 made by Avanquest but as their website indicates it�s for XP. They never updated it for Vista and Windows 7. Is there a utility that can undo some of the changes that were made to the machine when UBUNTU was installed, albeit, unsuccessfully.
(1) I have an HP PC running XP professional and I was wondering if I take the hard drive out from the COMPAQ and rig it to my HP via a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter device would I be able to see the contents of that COMPAQ computer that had Vista and now UBUNTU.
(2)What about attaching the COMPAQ internal hard drive and attaching it to my HP as a slave drive.
(3)Can the UBUNTU disk going to help?

I had Ubuntu 10.04 on this machine and wanted to convert it to a dual boot. It's a 500GB hard drive. The HDD had 3 partitions: one really big one, and two swap areas of about 6 GB each. I ran GParter and carved the big partition into a 100GB partition and a 400GB partition (less the swap areas). Then I installed Windows XP into the 100GB partition, then installed Ubuntu 10.04, selecting the "create dual boot" option.
It dual boots beautifully, and everything runs just fine. But I find that Ubuntu has split the 400 GB partition into two 200 GB partitions, and one of them is simply off-limits. I can see it, but I can't write to it. The attached png shows the Disk Utility, with the mystery partition selected. Its only contents is a folder called lost+found; I cannot open it.
I've shrunk my Windows partition to ~200GB and made ~100GB of free space for Ubuntu BUT .. it doesn't allow me to create a new partition there as I already have 4 primary ones.Since all of the given partitions ( including Recovery and Tools ) can not be touched ( removed ), I have no idea on how to solve this ..

I have shrink the volume to allow Linux installation. I have three partitions, first one is windows boot - about 100MB. Second one is about 110GB and it has windows 7. Third one is UNALLOCATED space of 110GB that I intended for Suse.

I would like to create a dual boot Opensuse/Vista laptop. My problem is I do not have a DVD-RW drive, and I am not that good with creating a bootable USB stick. I have read some of the installation guides offered here and attempted to install Opensuse via my USB stick without success. My question is there a setup.exe download offered for Vista users who would like to create a dual boot laptops? When I boot from the live DVD and go through the setup, I get stuck setting up the unassigned space as a linux partition. I don't understand what the setup is trying to tell me and I'm afraid I'll wipe out Windows 7. The message I get says there isn't enough space even though the unassigned available area is 64GB. I am very timid about following what Yast2 is telling me because to my untrained eye it appears the setup wants to use my entire hard drive. Where can I find more information about the disk setup section of the installation process?

(Since I need a special floppy during Windows Install...) I want to be able to use the Advanced Queuing capabilities of my SATA drives in Ubuntu.
Basically, I want to be able to create the perfect disk image of a CLEAN Ubuntu installed in a 30 gb partition. The problem is, if I install Ubuntu, then some drivers are installed automatically. I am using an old computer at the moment (my main is back at home) and I want to be able to create an image so that when I restore that image onto my main computer, it is not cluttered with drivers of the old computer. Is there a method that can be used for uninstalling drivers?
I am looking for the cleanest way to uninstall drivers, hopefully to the point where it will not leave any "residue" That is my first question. My second question (in general about disk image--I have never actually created nor restored an image): Can I create an image of partition A and restore the image on partition B? Basically, creating an image of one partition and restoring it on another partition. Or does it have to be restored on the original partition?
Also, what if it is the same scenario but partition B is a larger size? I know that if partition B is smaller, it cannot be done because the image is larger than the partition. Finally, can partition A be restored onto a different hard drive? I have yet to find answers of these questions on different forums in other sites (this is my 3rd try). I have XP on my IDE hard drive and Ubuntu on my USB hard drive (which is really an IDE drive with a USB adapter and external power souce). We've used Windows once in the past month, so we decided to jettison it. Two questions: 1. Can we simply delete all partiitions on the IDE hard drive and reformat or will this cause problems? 2 Is the write-speed gain worth switching the drives out, putting the Ubuntu drive in my IDE slot and my freshly wiped drive on the USB adapter?

My configuration is a dual disk dual bot system. I have XP Pro SP3 on one disk and Ubuntu 10.04 on second. XP has own, untached MBR ubuntu got Grub 2 installed on the same disk as Ubuntu. Ubuntu disk is booting first in BIOS. Grub 2 detected both system, however I can boot only to Ubuntu. When I am trying to boot XP I got black screen only. Looks like booting is stack in BIOS stage, because crt+alt+del reset system.
I read Ubuntu forum, search Google and did not come with any solutions. My XP MBR is OK. I can boot directly, choosing XP HDD in BIOS as a starting disk. All entries in grub.cfg looks fine to me. I made 3 different clear installations of Ubuntu. Each with the same result. I reinstaled Grub2 with no effect. I wonder if this may be a hardware/Grub 2 compatibility issue. I am using quite old components.My motherboard is Assus P4C800 Delux. I have 5 HDDs 2 CD. Exactly the same configuration was OK with 9.10/XP dual disk dual boot using Grub legacy.
