Ubuntu One :: Synchronizing Forever But Nothing Happens?

Oct 23, 2010

Am I the only person who can't get ubuntu one working properly?1) if I right-click a folder and ask to synchronize it to ubuntu one, there is absolutely no feedback at all (nothing seems to be synchronized, no icons are added to the folder, no progress bar, nothing).2) if I open the Ubuntu one preferences, it states "synchronizing in progress", and it keeps doing that. again; no progress, no icons, no nothing.Disconnecting reconnecting doesn't seem to matter.Rebooting (I know, I was desperate..) doesn't seem to matter.How do you guys manage to use this. I mean, the interface of ubuntu one is pretty clean, so there is not much to configure, which is good, if it would work out of the box .

Programming :: Synchronizing PortAudio Sound With GUI?

Apr 30, 2011

I'm writing an application that uses PortAudio to generate sound. I need to synchronize certain GUI changes with the sound stream. The callback function receives a struct PaStreamCallbackTimeInfo that seems to have the timing information I need, but there's no documentation on what the various fields mean. Through experimentation, I've found that the currentTime field is the time that the callback was called (in retrospect, that seems pretty obvious), but what do the inputBufferAdcTime and outputBufferDacTime fields mean?

(Actually, PortAudio calls the callback fast enough that I could just use the currentTime to get the synchronization close enough, but still... it's the principle of the thing.)

Server :: Synchronizing /etc/hosts Files Across Multiple Servers?

Jun 16, 2011

I have 16 linux servers that use /etc/hosts files to see and talk with each other. I'm adding servers to this pool of servers. It is required to do host resolution via the /etc/hosts files. DNS or NIS are not alternatives. Aside from manually editing each of the 16+ /etc/hosts files every time I add a server or editing one /etc/hosts file on one server then scp'ing it to all the other servers, is there anyway to edit the /etc/hosts on one server and "push" it onto the other servers that need the new /etc/hosts file?

Everywhere I've looked on the Net, there hasn't been any suggestion except for the options I mention here.

Or am I just whistling in the wind?

Ubuntu :: Filesystem Manager Goes Forever?

Jul 4, 2010

I have a shared network folder on my server called torrents. It is a folder that I drop .torrent files into to start automatic downloading. When I navigated there from my Ubuntu PC (10.4) I was provided a nice shortcut on my desktop. I have no idea when the problem started but after I rebooted and logged in I noticed a "thing" on my desktop.

torrents on peter.volume <- peter is my server name. Places -> x-nautilus-desktop:///torrents on peter.volume <-also showing up.

I cannot delete I get The file is an unkown type.

Now if I navigate Places -> Network -> Peter (server) I can see the folder "torrents" If I click the folder to open I get a never ending number of "starting file manager" windows.

The other folders work just fine, its just this one.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Process Takes Forever To End?

I'm running 9.1 and Firefox 3.5.7 with a few addons (better privacy, ghostery, cookieculler, adblock, personas) on a HP 8710p laptop with 4gb of ram.I use it to browse the internet at work, and I have it up for about 8-9 hours every day, during the course of the day I will open and close tons of tabs. At the end of the day when I'm getting ready to leave, I close out of firefox, and it takes one of my duo core processors all the way to 100% and sit at the top of my processes in my Conky for 5-10 minutes before it finally closes. I've been googling for a couple days and have yet to come up with anything,

Ubuntu :: Update Environment Variables Forever?

Apr 7, 2010

I've created a new environment variable and updated another one (PATH). I just want to save this changes once after reboot and forever. This is because I want to run a program (tecplot) just typing 'tec360' in the command line. If I create those new variable ( TEC_360_2008=/usr/tec360_2008 ) and update the PATH variable ( export PATH=$PATH:$TEC_360_2008/bin ) then bash detect the command 'tec360' and it runs my program. The problem is that this changes are not saved after rebooting.

According to the manual, I have to update the .bash_profile in my home directory but I don't have this file in this directory (neither in other directory). I only have .bash_history, .bash_logout and .bashrc in the home directory. I have updated .bashrc (typing . ./.bashrc) but it is not working.

Ubuntu Servers :: Keeping A Ssh Session Open Forever?

Mar 27, 2010

I stream my local police station dispatch on the web using an icecast/darkice configuration [URL]. The downside of using this software is that once you initiate darkice, a terminal has to be open - the process does not run in the background.

I tried placing a monitor on my server (ouch, that hurt) and keeping darkice alive that way, but my mail server kicks the process. Now, I set the KeepAlive variable to something outrageous and keep an ssh session open on my desktop box to keep the stream going. Screen does not work as Postfix boots that as well.

keeping the process going indefinately?

Ubuntu Servers :: Synchronizing Users Across Servers?

Oct 1, 2010

I wonder if other people have this problem. sometimes I need to duplicate most or all of a server from one machine to another. part where I most tend to have issues is with recreating the users. Sometimes the UIDs don't match up because of differences between the two systems, which gives funky results, like files owned by the wrong user.

Or, sometimes, I just need to create the same 10 users on x number of machines, and it's tedious to do this 10x times. Plus, then, if you need to change a password or delete a user, you have to do it x times.Any recommendations on how to centralize users/auth?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Removing Old Kernel Versions Forever

Apr 14, 2010

Here's how to always have only the latest kernel version in your grub:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/grub.d/10_linux

Find these lines:
Code:
list=`for i in /boot/vmlinu[xz]-* /vmlinu[xz]-* ; do
if grub_file_is_not_garbage "$i" ; then echo -n "$i " ; fi
done`

And change it with this:
Code:
for ver in /boot/vmlinu[xz]-* ; do
list="$ver"
done

Notice two differences.
1. There's no ` before "for" and after "done" keywords.
2. There's no list= before "for"

If you want to change the name of entry, scroll down to the end of the file and find last two occurrences of:
Code:
linux_entry
${OS} stands for Ubuntu and ${version} stands for your kernel version. I changed this into:
Code:
linux_entry "${OS} 9.10 Karmic Koala"

You can use your own imagination. If you want to have specific name for your Windows entry, in /boot/grub/grub.cfg copy everything between:
Code:
### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
and
Code:
### END /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
paste it in
/etc/grub.d/40_custom

Change the text between double quotes right after menu entry. (For example, my 40_custom looks like this now:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
# This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change the 'exec tail' line above.
menuentry "Windows 7" {
insmod ntfs
set root=(hd0,1)
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set bcdc24dddc249424
chainloader +1
}
)
and make 30_os-prober not executable:
Code:
sudo chmod -x 30_os-prober

If you want to remove recovery mode entry, just uncomment this line in /etc/default/grub:
Code:
#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_RECOVERY="true"
PS Don't forget to run
Code:
sudo update-grub
After you finish editing everything! And check in /boot/grub/grub.cfg if everything is ok!
