Ubuntu Installation :: How To Download And Store Packages For Future Use

Oct 18, 2010

I'd like to find out if it's possible to download and store (not install) official Ubuntu installation files, and then choose to install them whenever. I don't always have internet available and having to be connected every time I want to install a program really sucks. What happens if I had to format or something and I just wanna install all my programs again but no internet connection? Is there also away I can back up my Ubuntu and when I restore, I get all my downloaded and installed programs back, without having to re-install?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can Download Packages From Windows

Jan 5, 2010

It's on a desktop that has a dialup modem but no other Internet access (and I haven't even gotten the modem working yet...). So I have it hooked up to a Win2K laptop on the network that is Sharing its (dialup) Internet connection.I can take the laptop to the public library and leech off their wifi to download stuff at much higher speeds. It's not practical for me to take the desktop to the library... Is there a way for me to use the Windows laptop (at the library) to download the packages Update Manager tries to get for Ubuntu, bring it home, transfer them to the Ubuntu desktop, and have Update Manager just install 'em from there?

Ubuntu Installation :: Apt Authentication - 15 Packages Still To Download

Jun 17, 2010

The other night I tried to upgrade my system to Karmic Koala. The machine took forever to download the packages and when it was almost completed, the installation phase in the Update Manager suspended. Both keyboard and mouse weren't responsive so I was forced to shut the system down manually. Now when I boot up, it loads the desktop, a dialogue box pops up stating there's an Apt Authentication issue. When I click "Run this action now" it opens a window showing it is about to download 15 packages.

But unfortunately before it can load, the system hangs. If I reboot, close the dialogue box and try to use the Update Manager as a means to correct the problem, the same thing happens. In addition to trying to find a solution, I'm keen to avoid doing a full, clean install, as I don't want to lose the system configs and data (I've got 200gb in music files and use the system as a music server). I've also tried to load in "recovery mode" but it doesn't load properly.

General :: No Write Permission To Store Packages

Dec 31, 2010

I have tried to 'makepkg -s' easy-e17 in a few different places, but to no avail. I get the error:
Code:
ERROR: You do not have write permission to store packages in /bin/easy-e17.
Aborting...

Though, I also get this error for any other directory I try in. When trying with 'sudo' I am told that it is a "bad idea." I have never used makepkg before, so whatever is wrong might be obvious; I have never "fine-tined" my makepkg.conf before, either. Probably not relevant, but just in case: easy-e17 is a group of files from the Arch User Repository for installing Enlightenment (DR17). Perhaps there is something I need to install in order to make packages from the AUR? Or does that sound ridiculous? I wouldn't know.

Ubuntu Installation :: Download Packages And Transfer To Non Internet Machine?

Mar 23, 2010

I have a server which is in an isolated LAN onto which I would like to install some packages from the Ubuntu Repositories.I realise I can go to packages.ubuntu.com and download them one at a time following the dependencies through but this is a bit of a nightmare. Is there anyway I can use the -d option of apt-get to download the files on another machine so I can transfer the lot over in one go?It is probably important to note that the server is running 8.04.4 and the other machine I have run 9.10 and may or may not have said packages installed.

Debian Installation :: Can't Download Any Additional Packages - Update The Version - Unable To Connect To The Internet

Jul 14, 2011

I'm trying to do a net install with the latest release of debian - but my ethernet card is not recognized/the drivers are not available because I have a card that requires a linux kernel version of 2.6.35. This is obviously a problem because I can't download any additional packages, and I can't update the version because I'm not able to connect to the internet. I have installed it, but it's only text (which I assume is because I could not install the graphical interface, correct me if I'm blaringly wrong here). So what can I do to install debian on my laptop and be able to use my Intel Centrino Advanced-N 620 network card?

Ubuntu Installation :: Downloading Applications For Future Install?

Nov 4, 2010

I'm going round everyone I know installing Ubuntu on their computers whether they like it or not, and I must say so far they all like it except. I have to spend 5 hours downloading and installing all the software they need to make their system run 'as good as windows'.

I really need a whole bunch of popular programmes to put on a disk and install as I go. I know Ubuntu saves the downloads in a repository on the hard drive, but looking at it I am sometimes at a loss as to which folders contain which downloads, then there is the problem of multiple folders for one programme etc.or point me in the direction of a zipped up file with all the programmes a normal user might need.

General :: Where Does ITunes Store Its Stuff - Copy Its Data Store To An External Drive

Dec 8, 2009

I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.

Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.

Where does iTunes store its stuff?

Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?

Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?

Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?

Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?

Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?

Ironic that an apple application is blocking migration away from windows.

Ubuntu :: Apt Can't Download Packages?

May 31, 2011

I don't know where it can come from, but apt won't download any package. Here is the error I get (after a few minutes) :

Code:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:

[Code].....

I believe it uses http, so that is not a protocol blocked by the ISP.

And it is not automatic : last time I was about to report it here, the bug disappeared (and I didn't report because I thought it could have been fixed somehow, and I couldn't get the error message)

And wired connection works fine, too.

Actually, I just download the package from the address in the log via firefox. I really have no clue, since it is a pretty fresh install (no more than two weeks)

The only thing I can think of would be some bug in apt. I googled for an apt bug, and I saw that apt's http method 'doesn't handle redirects', but that was in 2005. Besides, I wouldn't be the only one to have this problem, and that doesn't explain why it works with a wired connection.

I didn't do anything but writing this post. It really looks random. What can I do when it happens to find out where it comes from?

Ubuntu :: Download Packages For Update From Another Computer?

Jul 17, 2010

My internet connection is one where I have to pay according to the amount of data transferred and Ubuntu updates require large downloads. I was wondering if there was some way to export the list of packages required for an update in ubuntu and then go and download them from another PC. (The other PC in question will be running windows).I'd love to know of any apps that can do this ..If there aren't any can someone tell me if there is a way to do this? I am just getting used to Linux but I still have no experience at all with writing shell scripts (which I suppose would be needed for this sort of thing).

So in summary, this is what I want. Synaptic (or any other package manager in Linux) should generate a file with all the packages that should be downloaded. A program on the PC with a better internet connection then interprets this file and downloads the packages creating a local copy of the packages. These local copies are then transferred to the Linux box which required the updates and the updates are applied..
