Ubuntu :: What Are Chances Of Super Smart Phones Being Released?

Feb 3, 2010

What are the chances of super smart phones being released?Devices which look like normal smart phones, but have the ability to run a full blown linux distro like ubuntu and have the power to play 1080p files, which also come with docking stations so you can plugin an external display, usb keyboard and mouse, so at home, it can be used as a normal desktop PC...Possibly using the ION based NVIDIA GPU with dual core 64bit processor!

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Audio Via HDMI/DisplayPort - Chances Making It Work?

May 11, 2011

I occasionally use a DisplayPort->HDMI cable to connect my laptop to my AV-Receiver, however I only get the picture to the AV-Receiver, but no sound. I read that not all DisplayPort->HDMI cables support sound, so I tested Windows7 on the same machine and it transmitted sound over that cable just fine. So I conclude that it is a Linux driver problem.

So I generally wonder whether this can be made to work easily or not. Does anyone here have experiences with this topic, especially with nvidia graphics cards managing the display port? (I did find older posts about HDMI audio, but they were all concerned with ATI graphics.)

pavucontrol / phonon do list a "High Definition Audio Controller Digital Stereo (HDMI)"-device, but sending sound to it does not do a thing. Furthermore, my dell laptop only has a displayport, but no HDMI connector.

Ubuntu One :: Ubuntuone-syncd Using 99% CPU For 2 Days?

1) ubuntuone-syncd has been using 99% cpu (at times) for two days now. Is this normal?

2) the syncing is EXTREMELY slow. I don't have any bandwidth limitations set and there seems to be very little data getting uploaded. Is this normal?

Ubuntu One :: Ubuntuone File Sync Overloading CPU

After upgrading to 11.04 I find that if I launch ubuntuone my machine immediately slows to a crawl and there is intense hard drive activity. This persists for hours. Only solution so far is to close ubuntuone and remove it from list of startup applications. I have made no changes to the files marked for ubuntuone syncing, and everything worked fine in 10.10.

Debian Multimedia :: Evolution Not Deleting An UbuntuOne Address Book

Apr 17, 2011

Previously I was running Ubuntu 10.10. I have since migrated both of my machines to Debian 6.0.1. Before migrating I backed up my previous Evolution configuration, and after installing Debian I restored it from that file. Everything worked great except that backup included my UbuntuOne CouchDB address book, which I never used. When I right click it and click "Delete", nothing happens. I'm guessing the files in .evolution that contain this information are binary because I've done a locate ubuntu and couldn't find anything in there. It's not a deal breaker, but I'd like to get rid of this unused address book from a different OS.

3) Is there any way to completely remove the option?

I was looking for a way which would enable autodelete of all rar-archives after the extraction so I don't have to clean the mess up later. I hear there is some option in command line arguments but that doesn't work with split archives. Is there a way in GUI? Some option maybe, which I could check to make all the future extractions in par with autodelete feature?

Ubuntu Installation :: Downloading Applications For Future Install?

Nov 4, 2010

I'm going round everyone I know installing Ubuntu on their computers whether they like it or not, and I must say so far they all like it except. I have to spend 5 hours downloading and installing all the software they need to make their system run 'as good as windows'.

I really need a whole bunch of popular programmes to put on a disk and install as I go. I know Ubuntu saves the downloads in a repository on the hard drive, but looking at it I am sometimes at a loss as to which folders contain which downloads, then there is the problem of multiple folders for one programme etc.or point me in the direction of a zipped up file with all the programmes a normal user might need.

Fedora :: NTP Time Keeps Drifting Into The Future?

Jan 25, 2011

I have a F14 laptop being used as a music server. For some reason the clock time runs fast and slowly drifts forward about 5 minutes/day.

ntpd is running. The ntpd.conf is pretty much F14 out of the box and the same as my other F14 instances that do not exhibit this problem. If I restart ntpd, it syncs up the time, but then the time slips until the ntpd seems to give up.

Initially ntpd reports it is synched, but then over time it reports being unsynchronized.

Shortly after restart:

Code:
ntpdc> sysinfo
system peer: w1-wdc.ipv4.got-root.me.uk
system peer mode: client
leap indicator: 11
stratum: 4

Not only this, I need to rework permissions (744 for folders and 644 for files), otherwise the newsite throws permission errors message.

Ubuntu :: How To Disable Video Thumbnails

Jan 10, 2010

I have Ubuntu 9.10, and writing video files to a mounted disk is slow. The reason is every time the buffer is flushed to disk, Ubuntu starts making a new video thumbnail for the file.If I skip the first block that has the RIFF data, then Ubuntu doesn't realize it's a video, and the write speed is about doubled. Then I can write the RIFF data at the end of the transfer (in the appropriate place in the file).I have tried setting an exclusive flock on the file while writing; however, that does not prevent Ubuntu from reading the file while it's being written and generating thumbnails.
