Since open office is now bought by oracle I am confused about the state of the latest version of OO version 3.2 I think. Would it be legal to install that version on a computer. Oracle perhaps made a bummer with this. The real dev community is thrown out and we are again looking at corporate greed taking precedence for their own profit rather than development of technology. I have high hopes from libre office but then one more open source product (it was not sun's to begin with remember) being swallowed by a corporate.

I tried umask 002, chmod etc, but they don't set it for future files.
I want to run Ubuntu Server Edition just at home, however to avoid having to reinstall it in the future when i upgrade hardware, I was thinking of virtualizing it first. Are there any minimalistic virtualisation solutions available at the moment for this sort of purpose? Or even better a linux distro just for this?

It works, but I havent been able to work out how to configure hybserv as well as server admins and ops, etc. Does anybody know of a good tutorial on how to configure ircd-hybrid with services? The endlessly long config file is just too confusing for me.

I cannot seem to find any good documentation on the role of flags -Bdynamic and -Bstatic in g++. The man pages are not very helpful either.I found an example on the web:"gcc object1.o object2.o -Wl,-Bstatic -lapplejuice -Wl,-Bdynamic -lorangejuice -o binary".According to which -Bstatic instructs the linker to statically link
the applejuice library and to dynamically link the orangejuice library. If orangejuice uses the applejuice library anywhere however,the applejuice is also linked dynamically. Is it correct to assume that this is correct and describes the true functionality of those two flags in gcc? (ie: Bstatic and Bdynamic are used for mixing static and shared libraries during linking)Is it correct to assume that the same applies to g++ as well?

Any ideas how to change the limits?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed java-6-sun on my Ubuntu 9.10 and now I wanna change the default system JVM search order. Based on the following instruction I should modify my /etc/jvm.
But there is no jvm in my Ubuntu, all I have is jvm.* which "*" refers to ".h" or other suffix. There is no "jvm" alone in my Ubuntu in order to do what the following says.
Setup the default Java version
Ubuntu Linux comes with update-java-alternatives utility to updates all alternatives
belonging to one runtime or development kit for the Java language. To select, Sun's JVM as provided in Ubuntu 7.10, enter:
$ sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun
You also need to edit a file called /etc/jvm This file defines the default system JVM search order. Each JVM should list their JAVA_HOME compatible directory in this file. The default system JVM is the first one available from top to bottom. Open /etc/jvm
$ sudo vi /etc/jvm
Make sure /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun is added to the top of JVM list
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun
So recently I've been trying out openSUSE, along with a few other distros, for use on my HTPC. Previously, I'd been using a hackintosh build, so my external media storage HDDs are all formated HFS+. It was actually surprisingly easy to get openSUSE to mount them for both reading and writing.
Only thing is, XBMC has been pretty unstable on all of the linux distros I've tried, and I'm wondering to what degree the HFS filesystem might be affecting things? It would take a fair bit of juggling -- or going out and buying a new multi-TB HDD -- to clear out the disks in turn so as to reformat them with an ext filesystem, but if that would help me get a more stable HTPC with opensuse -- the linux distro I've settled on -- it'd be worth it. I'll paste a link to the log from an xbmc crash, in case that would be helpful, but really, I'm just curious, since I don't really know all that much about how different filesystems work or anything, how much extra strain does the filesystem translating entail?
As per the bootchart png, what in the world is nautilus doing?
View 1 Replies View RelatedHow do I change the screen blanking behavior on Linux virtual terminals?
For example, if I switch to a VT from X, login, and leave the system alone for 5 minutes or so, the screen will blank like a screensaver. It comes back with any keypress, like a screensaver.
Mostly I just want to change the timeout, but I'm also interested in other settings.
If it helps, one of my systems is running Ubuntu 10.04 with the stock graphics drivers. fbset shows the console using the radeondrmfb framebuffer device.
I have a Debian Linux desktop. I want to change the screen's brightness without pressing the brightness button of my monitor. How can I do this? is this possible in command line or is there an application to be installed?
