Ubuntu shows the following error message when I try to launch Firefox "Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features." No other program including Google Chrome has this problem.

how to cross-reference it but searching on 'Could not initialize the browser's security component' will find it. Then look at the last 3 entries. Me and two other users have been unable to use Thunderbird since yesterday's update.

I have searched for like 35 minutes for a fix, I had the 3.6 installed on my f12 box but it worked buggy so I went in packet manager and removed it then yum uninstalled it. And tried to revert to the one that initially came with this build but now it won't start up at all.

I went to visit a website that I frequent and firefox through a error that basically said that the internet connection might be being tampered with and that the website was not authenticated. Meaning someone might be trying to load a fake website into my browser and impersonate the website to give me viruses or something.It's a website I frequent. Firefox 3.6.12 on Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop computer is reporting a "this connection is untrusted" error for sites that have security certificates provided by COMODO. Yet, the same sites work fine in Firefox 3.6.x on Windows XP, or Chromium in Ubuntu. Here is the more specific message: "The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is unknown.
(Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer)" The issuer is listed as "COMODO High Assurance Secure Server CA." Here are some examples that throw this error for me:[URL]... It appears that there was some controversy with COMODO and Mozilla (due to bad behavior by COMODO) in the past, but all I can find on that indicates that this should be not an issue any longer.
Anybody with ideas?

Trying to install the Suhosin module with the php 5.2.9 c5-testing repo...it won't run with the php 5.2.9 testing build (there isn't an updated suhosin package against the 5.2.9 build)

What's the best way to handle this from an admin best practices standpoint? I want to do everything possible to keep the suhosin module tracked by yum for future updating etc. Is it best to try to find a suhosin rpm that is built for 5.2.9 and install it with yum localinstall? If not, if I build the module myself, what's the best path to keeping yum/rpm in the loop on this install for future updating via yum?

I readded all my sources and ppa's on the upgrade but now they are disabled? Also I have a malformed line..Why would they be disabled if I changed them all one by one through software sources?

I keep getting a warning messaged almost every time I reboot about Ubuntu running in low-graphics mode on a Macbook 5,1. This has been happening since Lucid Beta 1.

After I finish loading in low graphics mode I have to run "sudo nvidia-xconfig". Then, the next reboot the graphics card driver is loaded properly. Is anyone else experiencing this problem or have an idea how to correct it? I know it is a long shot, but do you think doing a fresh install of the stable release would work?

This is the error I got when I tried to update it today. On the top the icon for the update manager is a red circle with a white line like a stop sign. When I click on it this is the error message I get. Could not initialize the package information. An unresolved problem occurred while initializing the package information.

When I upgraded to CentOS5.2 from 5.1, puplet quit working:

I've been having a recurring problem on Slackware64 13.1. If I open VLC (or any other media player available for Slackware) before I open Firefox, then my sound works 100% and there's never any problem, however, if I open Firefox first, and there happens to be a flash video loading, then any other media player (mplayer-plugin, Amarok or VLC) will fail to play sound. VLC tells me:

From the GUI, software update gives the error "Failed to Initialize - Failed to initialize the packaging backend. This may occur if other packaging tools are being used simultaneously." In the more details, "There are unfinished transactions remaining.
I run a terminal, switch to root and do as it tells me. It returns saying that there are no unfinished transactions. I've run it several times with the same result. Then I run "yum clean all" and "yum upgrade." The upgrade processes runs and reports "there are unfinished transactions..." However, the upgrade process still completes. Basically it is now a severe annoyance, but the system does seem to upgrade. I just cannot figure out why there are somehow unfinished transactions that I cannot get rid of. I tried reinitializing the rpm database - no luck. How can I somehow reset yum?

my sound works when i boot up but as soon as i play a couple of files with VLC video or audio it doesn't matter the sound stops and comes up with an error saying: ALSA version problem:VLC failed to re-initialize your sound output device. I am trying to install a pretty obscure program in Linux : Lingualinks When installing this I get Run-time error: '429': ActiveX component can't be create object I have followed another thread and it suggested using winetricks The only activex components under wintricks are the Adobe Flash Player ActiveX and firefox plugins and MS ActiveX Control Pad Neither of these seem to be relevant. I copied the dll into system32 directory

Does anyone know when we'll see Firefox 3.0.19 packaged for 8.04 LTS? I'm still stuck at 3.0.18. And what will happen after this? My understanding is that after .19 Mozilla is dropping support for FF 3.0.
Upgrade policies not withstanding, I find it rather annoying when an "LTS" release doesn't keep up with the most security-critical package in the distro, the browser. 8.04 LTS should have moved to FF 3.5+ a *long* time ago. Now it seems it will be forced to do so or else just forget about browser updates for the last year of 8.04?
I know I can install the current Firefox with ubuntuzilla, I just keep wishing Ubuntu would do it for me.

I am running 11.04 on an HP tx2 laptop. I have been able to perform updates until the last one. Then I get the following message when I try to use update manager or terminal to get updates or just to generally install a new program. I performed the update from 10.10 online so I don't have the cd nor will I be able to download it. Not enough time to do so.

Having all kinds of trouble with my video drivers after upgrading to 10.04 The error message I get is
Unable to initialize PCS database Missing PCS default file .etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default No devices I keep reinstalling my video drivers from the ati-driver.run file for my radeon 2400 card - seemingly successfully - but it doesn't seem to help and when I reboot i just get the limited video function

Firefox 3.5 has a critical java script vulnerability as noted in the recent news. I had to manually update to 3.5.1 using the mozilla tarball because there's still no Firefox 3.5.1 in Fedora Updates or even Fedora Updates Testing repositories. Is this normal? I didn't want to resort to using the mozilla one because now I can't use flash (my system is 64 bit and mozilla only seems to offer a 32bit tar file of Firefox) and having two Firefoxs means dealing with the ProfileManager, separate bookmarks and so on.
I'm trying to find out if I'm just looking in the wrong place, I tried the normal mirrors for "updates" for Fedora 11 and then updates-testing and also the baseurl for "updates" to get rid of the mirror update delay. None of them seem to have 3.5.1 ?

Long time Ubuntu user, but it's been a couple years.
My friend had an old Dell Dimension E251 lying around and I said I'd help him turn it into a media center of sorts. The old 52" HDTV he wants to plug it into has a broken vga input and no HDMI, so our only real option is component or (heaven forbid) S-video. He can afford to get a new video card if it's relatively cheap, and I'm not really sure what would be our best option. Does anyone have a card in mind that would be relatively hassle free? I considered getting a card with HDMI output and using one of those HDMI to component converters, but my research suggests that that won't work. Are there old cards with component out, or is there a card that makes this relatively easy to achieve?

Overnight, I upgraded from KDE 4.5.1 to 4.6.3 and had a rude awakening this morning when I found that KDE had managed to, once again, break the Task Manager "force rows" behavior which had been fixed a few major releases ago. I found this lovely patch that had been applied:

And thus broken the functionality, and I want to recompile that particular plasmoid with the patch removed. However, I am completely unfamiliar with CMake or building anything at all, for that matter. All my programming is done in PHP which means I'm pretty much completely lost. I'm in the midst of pulling down the kde-workspace tree with git, and already downloaded and modified a separate copy of the file in question to look the way it is supposed to. I don't want to rebuild all of KDE, just the one module.

I had a RAID1 array with two disks. I wanted to remove one of the disk and replace it by a new one. I first expanded the array from 2 to 3 components and let RAID rebuild completely. When this was done I used Gnome disk utility (palimpsest) to remove the component on the disk I want to get rid of. It looks like palimpsest did mess up somewhere because the array is no displaying as degraded. How can I get rid of the "removed" entry (was /dev/sdc1) in the RAID array (and hopefully have it come in Running state)?

I am trying to pinpoint which component of my machine is dying. Here's what I get when I try to install Windows 7: The specified I/O operation on DeviceHarddisk0DRO was not completed before the time-out period. I have tried changing hard drives, swapping memories (running them in single and parallel), changing BIOS settings, etc. When I run a live CD with Fedora, it will come up fine but when I try to install it runs like a snail. It will never complete.
