Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Error - Could Not Initialize Package Info
Aug 27, 2010
This is the error I got when I tried to update it today. On the top the icon for the update manager is a red circle with a white line like a stop sign. When I click on it this is the error message I get. Could not initialize the package information. An unresolved problem occurred while initializing the package information.
please report this bug against "update-manager" package and include the following error message :
'E:Malformed line 54 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse),
E:The list of sources could not be read.'
I am running 11.04 on an HP tx2 laptop. I have been able to perform updates until the last one. Then I get the following message when I try to use update manager or terminal to get updates or just to generally install a new program. Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.egr.msu.edu_pub_ubuntu_archive_dists_natty-updates_main_i18n_Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
I performed the update from 10.10 online so I don't have the cd nor will I be able to download it. Not enough time to do so.
HMy Update Manager and Synaptic Package Manager are showing me the following massage when I try to open them: Could not initialize the package information. An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: E:Type 'n' is not known on line 2 in source list etc /apt/ sources.list.d/ubuntu-wine-ppa-lucid.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.
I upgraded Ubuntu 11.04 x86 to Ubuntu 11.10 x86 via system upgrade. Everything was working fine. The setup is dual boot with Windows 7 Ultimate inan old Dell Inspiron 600M.One day when I signed into Ubuntu, following error message showed up when I try to check for update."Could not initialize package information.
i am unable to open update manager when i open it , it gives back a msg stating that cannot initialize the package information. and here is the error msg.
'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
And when i tried with #sudo apt-get update
Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
and even i tried with deleting that file(security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages) but was unsuccessful.
I was trying to open the Update Manager and this popped up... "Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ph.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_i18n _Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'"
This is the error: Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room. Please increase the size of APT::Cache-Limit. Current value: 25165824. (man 5 apt.conf), E:Error occurred while processing libwpeditor-dev (NewFileVer1), E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/de.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_karmic_universe _binary-amd64_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
When I open Update Manager and click "check," it starts downloading package information and then the following pops up: Could not download all repository indexes.
The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.
Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45 80] Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45 80] Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I opened Software Sources to try and remove the repositories, but couldn't find them. Plus I'm not sure if I need to manually replace these repositories with newer ones- I'm still relatively new at using Ubuntu (made the full switch from windows in October 2009). Plus, whenever I do install updates with the update manager, the "last updated" time doesn't reset itself. It finishes installing the selected packages, and the message at the top of the Update Manager window reads "Your system is up-to-date. The package information was last updated 28 days ago. Using Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64
Along with the standard messages, apt-get displayed
Code:
gpg: symbol lookup error: /usr/local/lib/libreadline.so.6: undefined symbol: PC This occurs on using the update manager, package manager, apt-get update, etc. Any ideas? I've tried deleting the cached files, changing my server, checking that my date & time are correct (signing can be time sensitive), updating gpg (it was already at the latest), and maybe some other things I've forgotten.
I am getting the below message, when I try a start update manager? Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug for the 'update-manager' package and try to include the following error message E:Malformed Status line, no 3rd word, E:Error occurred while processing toshset (UsePackage2), Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
I'm using ubuntu 10.04 beta 1. when I try to update & upgrade I get the following error:
Code: Setting up install-info (4.13a.dfsg.1-5ubuntu1) .../etc/environment: line 4: LC-ALL=en_US.UTF-8: command not found dpkg: error processing install-info (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 127 Errors were encountered while processing: install-info
I can't update my system - I am runing Karmic/9.10 When I launch Update Manager, I get: "Please report this bug for the 'update-manager' package and try to include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_karmic_main_i18 n_Translation-en%5fGB, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' "
E: Type 'nchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu-wine-ppa-maverick.list E: The list of sources could not be read. The above is the console output when i type sudo apt-get update Update manager throws the same error so now I can't install or update software .
It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!
I am completely new at Ubuntu and would like to solve a problem I have when I try the update manager. I get this message:"Could not initialize the package information. An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
having had problems with getting grub2 to work on dual HDD setup...despite the most excellent advice on the forum i took the plunge and installed 10.10 from update manager within 10.04..... bingo fixed grub and now have dual boot again. but the update manager and synaptic package don't work because of libedata-cal1.2-6 file that remains..following other advice on the forum Advice gratefully received, how can i force an unistall of this package
mark@studypc:~$ sudo apt-get -f remove Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done
Have received errors the last two times I've run Update Manager. This one says: Package Operation Failed

subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 The last error said something about "Max Reports". What I can't tell is whether the updates actually installed.
Since upgrading to Natty I have a very annoying issue and since I am unable to resolveWhenever I start the synaptics package manager I get the following message:An error occurred:E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.Once I run sudo dpkg --configure -a from the terminal this is what I get:Setting up xulrunner-1.9.1 (1.9.1.18~hg20110309r27352+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd1) ...No further progress the machine hangs indefinitely on this, need to kill terminal to exit. Even hours waiting does not show any progress.
I've recently come across a problem concerning the Package Installer that's stoping me from installing; whenever I try to install Package Installer pops up an error stating that only one software management tool is allowed to run at once. However whenever this happens it's the only visible tool open. No "update manager", "aptitude" or anything else. I've tried looking through the list of processors, but I can't find this other mysterious management tool it's complaining about.
I readded all my sources and ppa's on the upgrade but now they are disabled? Also I have a malformed line..Why would they be disabled if I changed them all one by one through software sources?
Error: Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Malformed line 56 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse), E:The list of sources could not be read.'
Ubuntu 10.04, update manager: the package "libmyth-perl" shows up, but is greyed. I have purged all myth-tv (assuming this package belongs there) from my system, but I am unable to remove this package from the update manager.
I have the package "xvidcap" (Screen recorder) installed in Ubuntu, the problem I have is the version I have installed is an older version and there is a newer version avaliable, but I don't want to install the newer version as this breaks some functionality regarding screen capturing e.g. audio capturing. But each time I run Update Manager the package appears in the list to be upgraded.
Is there anyway to flag the package as do not upgrade or something to make it not appear in Update Manager or at least have it greyed out so the checkbox isn't automatically checked each time update manager is ran?
Is there an easy way/place to get more info on the updates that the Ubuntu (9.04) Update Manager presents to you? I know you can highlight one and look below at the "Changes" and "Description". But how can you find a real explanation of what the update is? To give one exampe: There's a 5.0MB update called: openoffice.org-writer It appears to be a new version of the Writer program?? or is it just security updates?? Should I install it if I'm happy with the current Writer version? bottom line: where can I get plain talk about what these updates are?
I have a Win vista dual booted with ubuntu, no problem there, all's well. I used live-usb to make a bootable USB with centos 5.0 I created the usb and it will boot just fine. The problem I run into is updating the installation with the package manager. I run the manager and the system prompts for reboot and I get this error:

SDB: assuming drive cache: writethrough SDB: assuming drive cache: writethrough /init: line 486: /sysroot/etc/udev/rules.d/ 50-udev*: ambiguous redirect bug in initramfs /init detected Dropping to a shell. bash: no job control in this shell bash-3.2#
Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit I have not been able to update using the update manager or by using the package manager. It seems when the update manager tries to download all the requests fail.Anyone else had this problem??
When I update my system by KpackageKit I have the ability to read what was fixed by that package update by clicking on package's name. How to read this info in command line by yum?
