Ubuntu Security :: Weird Website With A Error By Firefox?
Mar 19, 2011
I went to visit a website that I frequent and firefox through a error that basically said that the internet connection might be being tampered with and that the website was not authenticated. Meaning someone might be trying to load a fake website into my browser and impersonate the website to give me viruses or something. It's a website I frequent. Also the website doesn't have the www. in the url.[URL]..

I get an Untrusted Connection error when I visit this site to login into my GRE account, and I cannot add it as an exception, in Mozilla Firefox 4.0 on Ubuntu 11.04. When I visit the site using Chrome, I have no issues. Is this a bug in Firefox's certificate management? I'm using Ubuntu 11.04. I do not get this error in Windows' Firefox 4.0.

1. I understand you can protect your files or directories in your website by setting file/directory permissions. The meaning of r w x is clear to me, but I'm not sure how to proceed... Starting with the index.html file, if I wanted to make it so that anyone in the world can read it but can't modify it, do I set its permissions to rwxr-xr-x? If I set it to rwxr--r--, would that mean the file couldn't be served? I mean, what does the x setting do on a .html file, how can a .html file be executable?
2. If file permissions work on the lines of owner-group-others, in the context of a website, who is 'group'? As far as I can tell, there's only the owner, which is me, and others, which is the world accessing the site. Am I correct in thinking that by default, say when creating a website on a shared hosting server, there is no group unless I specifically set one up?
3. My ISP allows the DynDNS.org service, meaning that I could serve a website from my home. It's too early to go that route just yet, but for future reference, I would like to ask about the server software called Hiawatha. It is said to be secure, but having read some evaluations of it, it doesn't seem to offer anything that couldn't be accomplished with Apache or Cherokee, it's just that its security settings are simpler and easier to configure. Am I right about this? Or does Hiawatha truly offer something that the other major server packages don't?

Ubuntu shows the following error message when I try to launch Firefox "Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features." No other program including Google Chrome has this problem.

Firefox 3.6.12 on Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop computer is reporting a "this connection is untrusted" error for sites that have security certificates provided by COMODO. Yet, the same sites work fine in Firefox 3.6.x on Windows XP, or Chromium in Ubuntu. Here is the more specific message: "The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is unknown.
(Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer)" The issuer is listed as "COMODO High Assurance Secure Server CA." Here are some examples that throw this error for me:[URL]... It appears that there was some controversy with COMODO and Mozilla (due to bad behavior by COMODO) in the past, but all I can find on that indicates that this should be not an issue any longer.
Anybody with ideas?

I have this little problem with my keyboard. When in Firefox, I have to ctrl+click a link about three times before there is any reaction and a new tab is opened with that link. There is not much chance that there is some physical impediment in the keyboard because all of my other keyboard shortcuts involving ctrl work fine, and I have disassembled and cleaned the keyboard on my netbook (eeepc 1008ha).

Kubuntu10.10After installing a 6000+ font collection from KDE-Look.org, my computer had assumed a new font, though I restarted and it is now fine, generally speaking. My Firefox still has this crazy font, and it is so weird that it is almost unreadable.

how to install firefox 3.6 on my 9.1 ubuntu. About adding various repository and the a sudo apt get and all that. I can do it that way, and I am sure it will work.
What stop me to just download the .deb package from mozilla for the version I want and install it? Will it be less integrated to the system, will it not be compatible with my 64bit ubuntu? I just find it so much simpler to download a package from the web and double click on it than going through terminal, yet no-one seems to propose this option.

The problem actually lies with Firefox (3.0.19) After I solved my problems, everything looked fine at first. That was until I went to one particular website and found that some links were missing. They simply were not showing in the browser. They were showing in the source code, so they should have appeared. Now, I have two different profiles by using:

I was viewing this website, this evening:
HTML Code:
http://www.hermanmiller.com/
It is a famous chair manufacture, which produce the famous line "Aeron Chairs". When you are on that web page, if you move your mouth to the "product" tag near the top of the page and click on "seating", you will see all their fancy chairs. Then after I click on the first model, I realize my entire ubuntu (10.04) was hung.
The month can still move, but sluggish and everything else lost responses, including keyboard and gnome panel and etc. And the only thing I can do is a hard reboot. And this problem is reproducible.
I can't find any error message from .xsession-errors, or dmesg, or syslog, or user.log or any log.
Is this a known bug for firefox or ubuntu?

I want to set up a website that hosts very confidential business information. The info needs to be accessed by multiple people in different geographical regions. The entire website would require the high security (ie: there are no little sections that are publicly viewable). While the site will be run with Ubuntu server, I will be hosting it in Amazon's EC2 cloud.
So, if I use the HTTPS protocol with an SSL certificate, am I pretty well reaching the most secure possible situation? Are there any concerns with using the EC2 solution? Obviously there are a LOT of variables involved with maintaining website security, but I want to know if HTTPS is the current best bet (in addition to all the "best practices" of securing a site) or if there is a more robust way of securing content.

I have a strange problem with my browser(s), even Epiphany....when I go to my music site [URL] then log in, go to my page and click on link to play a song the browser Crashes. It never did this before and I dont know what I could have done to cause this. It only does this on this website. Could it be that they use a Quicktime plugin to play the music? I don't know cause I used to be able to play music on there before. It doesnt do this on my Reverbnation site page, just Icompositions. If I click on the icon to restart browser a box comes up saying "we're sorry"...your browser crashed for no apparent reason.....and offers a choice to either reload the page (that repeatedly crashes) or start new session. It isn't a big deal but this never used to happen before. Could it be some bad code on that website?

The basics: Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid x64 with Firefox 3.6.11 on a Thinkpad T61p 2gb ram/500gb HD. When I try to access my email via Squirrelmail, Firefox hangs on loading. If I stop the page from loading, wait a few minutes, then try again, I have a 50:50 chance of it loading this time.
I've run the update to make sure I have the most recent versions of software, but it still hangs. I've tried a few cursory searches, but find nothing referencing Lucid or that is otherwise current.

A friend of mine has a private forum setup so he and I can communicate back and forth so we don't have to send emails. The link is a "https://" so I'm assuming it's secure. I'm a newbie to ubuntu and I have already switch 3 of my computers at home to ubuntu.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and google chrome as my browser. When I log into his forum it pops up with a screen saying "The site's security certificate is not trusted" and I always click proceed anyways. I'm not worried about this because I'm 110% sure that it's his website that I'm trying to access. My question/problem is it also pops up with a little box telling me to enter my Username and Password every time. When I was using WindowsXP, I had to enter this info once and then I wouldn't have to enter it again.

I don't care for domain 'authentication' by an "Authority". I don't trust no one, so CA's to me are as trustworthy as the gypsy in the park.
I can use a self-signed certificate, but the problem is most browsers makers are Fn idiots that say the connection is not secure, when it actually it, but because I did not folk out cash, it makes my website look bad.
I can understand the need for a 3rd party to verify the domain host to prevent man in the middle attacks, but I do not care for this.. and browser makers should take more responsibility and introduce different padlocks for types of authentication, rather than saying "this connection is encrypted, but not secure because its self-signed". What a load of horse s***!
How many times does people stop to read certificate authorities? I sure don't. I only care weather or not the connection has been encrypted.. so, I am looking for a way for simply providing encryption for my website.
From what I understand, when you submit a CSR to a CA, it includes the private key, meaning that the CA would be able to see the encrypt data, should they get hold of it. This is not acceptable for me.
Is there anything other way to use encryption other than the SSL model that is used typically amongst HTTPS browsers today?

I'm Dual-booting XP with Ubuntu Karmic Koala, heres my other specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium D 3.0Ghz family(15) model(4) stepping(4)
GFX: Geforce 7800 GT (had problems with GFX when I first installed Ubuntu, I had to update my drivers)
2 GB RAM
This is a nearly fresh install of Karmic Koala, I've only installed whatever updates I needed, graphics card drivers, KPlayer, and Google Chrome. Because I prefer Chrome over Firefox I immediately went to download Chrome, and Firefox would get to the Chrome page and then crash. I then got the Chrome install file from another computer and installed it. Chrome will not even launch, so I go to search the problem in Firefox and it crashes on ANY link I click in Google Search. I also tried to directly type websites into the URL box: it loads the pages title (Ex. "Yahoo! Mail"), and crashes before displaying the page at all.
This is a very odd problem to me as I used the same disc to install dual-boot with Win7 and Ubuntu on my laptop which works perfectly, and now this happens to my desktop.

Recently Firefox is showing some but not all the links inside a page in a website that I use every day.Firefox had worked well in the past years with this site, so I made a few tests:- I tested the web page on Firefox 3.5.9 on Fedora 12. Some links missing.- I tested the same web page on IE8 on Windows Vista. No issues, all links there.- I tested the same web page downgrading Firefox to version 3.5.4 and downgrading the required libraries. Same issue, some links missing.- I compared the html code that the web server hands to both IE8 and Firefox. They are exactly the same.I don't know enough about html or javascript to understand why Firefox doesn't like some of this code portion.
Code:
<td align='left'>
<p class='liga'><a href="javascript:GeneraId('11')"><img src="image.gif" BORDER=0

Been trying to get Enlightenment to install on my 13.37 multilib. Used sbo to install most of the libraries (ecore needed the LDFLAGS="-L/usr/lib${LIBDIRSUFFIX}" fix so I manually did that). All installed correctly. Then started enlightenment itself in sbopkg. It did the 'file in wrong format' thing, so I manually dled the slackbuild, added the LDFLAGS line, and ran it. It produced this error, and I have no idea what its telling me.
Code:
checking how to recognize dependent libraries... pass_all
checking for ar... ar
checking for strip... strip
checking for ranlib... ranlib
checking command to parse /usr/bin/nm -B output from gcc -std=gnu99 object... ok
