Fedora :: Pinpoint Which Component Of Machine Is Dying

Apr 16, 2011

I am trying to pinpoint which component of my machine is dying. Here's what I get when I try to install Windows 7: The specified I/O operation on DeviceHarddisk0DRO was not completed before the time-out period. I have tried changing hard drives, swapping memories (running them in single and parallel), changing BIOS settings, etc. When I run a live CD with Fedora, it will come up fine but when I try to install it runs like a snail. It will never complete.

Fedora :: Back Up Filesystems Without System Dying?

Jun 7, 2010

I have a 2TB USB drive which I use as a backup device - I dump two filesystems onto it, totalling around 1TB. However, doing the dump trashes my F11 system, making it basically unusable, not only during the dump but also afterwards. I have 8GB of RAM, all of which is needed and normally in use, but when dumping, the system starts hogging huge amounts of it as buffer space - up to 1GB of RAM is reported to be allocated. And rather than using free memory for buffer space, it seems to aggressively swap processes out to get it. The system tends to melt down as a result, and just switching virtual desktops can take 5 minutes.

But after the dumps finish, the problems continue - the system is currently trying to keep around 700-800MB free, and continually swapping out processes to do so, even after the buffer space in use has gone back to about 100MB. This seems like strange behaviour for a fairly common type of activity. Presumably a lot of the buffer space is used to store what is being read from the filesystem (which will never be needed again), and some is used to cache the writes to the USB drive which is slower than the internal hard drives.

I have spent a lot of time trying changes to some of the kernel parameters, after reading articles about them. Of all the ones I've tried, setting vm.dirty_ratio to 1 instead of 5 helps a bit, and setting vm.dirty_background_ratio to 5 instead of 20 makes some improvement I think. Setting vm.swappiness to 0 doesn't seem to help at all.

So my question (at last!) is - how can I back up my filesystems without my system dying? In particular, can I limit the space used for buffers somehow, or turn off buffering for the dump process? And why does dumping result in the system artificially keeping huge amounts of space free afterwards, so I have to reboot to make the system usuable again?

Fedora :: How To Best Replicate Dying Hard Disk?

Mar 10, 2011

I'm pretty sure the hard disk on my FC5 system (tells you how old it is!) is failing. It's a 500GB drive and I have a second hard disk that's 1.5TB (if I remember right) as a secondary.I would like to (ideally) just migrate everything -- settings, MBR, OS, home dirs, etc., everything -- to a different drive, take out the one that's on the fritz, and reboot the system with everything as it was...just a new hard drive.

Alternatively, I figure I could remove the old drive, move the secondary one into place as the primary, reformat it (assuming there's no data I need), and then install a fresh FC version and from there, migrate data from the old one as needed. I've done this latter method before and assuming the hard drive doesn't totally go, it should work. But I'd really RATHER have somehow a "mirror copy" of the 500GB drive that just seamlessly replaces what's currently there.

Fedora :: Correctly Remove A RAID Component?

Dec 4, 2010

I had a RAID1 array with two disks. I wanted to remove one of the disk and replace it by a new one. I first expanded the array from 2 to 3 components and let RAID rebuild completely. When this was done I used Gnome disk utility (palimpsest) to remove the component on the disk I want to get rid of. It looks like palimpsest did mess up somewhere because the array is no displaying as degraded. How can I get rid of the "removed" entry (was /dev/sdc1) in the RAID array (and hopefully have it come in Running state)?

SUSE :: Very Slow Computer - HD Dying?

May 3, 2010

If I start it up, and it's fast, it's like that through out. But if I start it up, and it's slow, it is slow like that for a whole time, and doesn't recover. When that happens, I saw the CPU almost 100% all the time. The hard drive light indicator would be on all time time. The top command doesn't indicate any process that use a lot of CPU. It just has a high "wa" percent. My remedy so far is to restart the machine, and hopes it's fast again. Sometimes it does sometimes, it doesn't. It always start up to the login screen very fast.

However, even before logging in, I can see it's slow if the hard drive light is on all the time, and not blinking). Even typing in the password would show a slow echo of the *. This is OpenSuse 11.2, 64 bit. The file system is ext4 (I wonder if it has something to do with this). Does anyone have any pointers on how to troubleshoot this? I may do a re-install. However, if the hard drive is failing, then I'll just back up and wait for the day it stops working.

Programming :: Building One KDE Component With CMake?

Jun 21, 2011

Overnight, I upgraded from KDE 4.5.1 to 4.6.3 and had a rude awakening this morning when I found that KDE had managed to, once again, break the Task Manager "force rows" behavior which had been fixed a few major releases ago. I found this lovely patch that had been applied:

[URL]

And thus broken the functionality, and I want to recompile that particular plasmoid with the patch removed. However, I am completely unfamiliar with CMake or building anything at all, for that matter. All my programming is done in PHP which means I'm pretty much completely lost. I'm in the midst of pulling down the kde-workspace tree with git, and already downloaded and modified a separate copy of the file in question to look the way it is supposed to. I don't want to rebuild all of KDE, just the one module.

Software :: Apache 2.2.x Dying Several Times An Hour?

May 27, 2011

I manage an Apache 2.2.3 web server. It stops working several times an hour, so I removed the semaphores and restarted it as a workaround, but I dont know what is causing this. Lately i've noticed that the workaround is not working at all.

Code:
0 */1 * * * /usr/bin/ipcs -s | grep apache | perl -e 'while (<STDIN>) { @a=split(/s+/); print `ipcrm sem $a[1]`}'
0 */1 * * * /sbin/service httpd restart 1>/dev/null
Below is what I can see in my error_log file.

What is the mutex message telling me. To be honest, I don't know much about semaphores nor how they work. You can see after the semaphore issue, that Apache is sent the SIGTERM signal. I have seen other posts on this topic, but not explicitly with Linux 2.6.22 and Apache 2.2.3 with a description of the issue and a permanent fix.

OpenSUSE :: Plasmoid Component Not Found Errors

Jan 26, 2010

I had to reload my openSuSE 11.1 and reloaded KDE 4.3.4 from KDE Repositories and did an unconditional update on KDE Core and Community to ensure I got all the current versions back.

I am now having an issue with at least two plasmoids that is regularly used. When I attempt to add them to the desktop, I get the message "component not found". This happens to at least these two, yasp and yawp for system status and weather. It may happen to others, I haven't tried.

They are both loaded and both are present in /usr/share/kde4/services. I removed them using YaST, then rebooted, then re-added them, then rebooted and still get the same result, component not found.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Old HDTV With Component Input Only?

Feb 22, 2011

Long time Ubuntu user, but it's been a couple years.

My friend had an old Dell Dimension E251 lying around and I said I'd help him turn it into a media center of sorts. The old 52" HDTV he wants to plug it into has a broken vga input and no HDMI, so our only real option is component or (heaven forbid) S-video. He can afford to get a new video card if it's relatively cheap, and I'm not really sure what would be our best option. Does anyone have a card in mind that would be relatively hassle free? I considered getting a card with HDMI output and using one of those HDMI to component converters, but my research suggests that that won't work. Are there old cards with component out, or is there a card that makes this relatively easy to achieve?

Hardware :: Nvidia 9400GT DVI-I To Component Adapter Not Working?

May 29, 2009

I am using a NVIDIA 9400GT video card on the latest Ubuntu. So it is analog and the vido card port is DVI-I ... all is correct ...

I am connecting to a DYNEX DX-LCD22-09 TV with HDTV component cables. The TV accepts both YCbCr and YPbPr signals. When I first boot the linux box there is no signal. Then right before it auto logs in I get a picture that is all green on the right side, black everywhere else and the TV displays it is at 1280x720 60hz. Finally the screen goes blank when the machine logs in - no signal! I have tried all combination of the adapter settings and have looked over the component input and output cables many times to insure I have it setup correctly.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Internet Dying And Computer Freezing On Unplug Of Usb

Jun 8, 2011

I am currently using opensuse to run a server, however I am experiencing some difficulties. Every once in a while, and I mean completely randomly. This will occur out of no where, and then not happen for five days, then occur twenty times in a row. What happens is the computer runs fine, and all is well but suddenly it wont connect to the internet. All applications are fine and everything is working. It isn't frozen, just won't load webpages. I am using a belkin 111v2 wireless g adapter and it usually works fine.

So when the internet freezes, if I unplug any usb the computer freezes. The mouse stops moving and the keyboard won't respond. The caps lock light won't even turn on. However the laser on the mouse is on, but the computer won't respond. Its like its shutting off the usb hubs. The only thing to do is force shut it off and restart until i no longer have the problem. Sometimes it helps if I open it and re-seat the ram, but that gets old. Does anyone have a solution?

Fedora Networking :: Getting A Machine To Update Its Machine Name In The DNS ServerSounds Doesn't?

Feb 20, 2011

I have an issue with the manner in which Network Manager is configuring the network and short of ditching Network Manager I can see no solution. The issue : Getting a machine to update its machine name in the DNS serverSounds simple doesn't it I operate a FreeBSD based firewall / DHCP / DNS server, using a default Network Manager DHCP configuration the Fedora clients do not register their names with the DNS server when they obtain an address.

I have traced the communications with Wireshark and the Fedora clients are NOT supplying the PC's hostname as part of the exchange so this is NOT a DNS server configuration issue. If I uncheck the option 'Automatically obtain DNS information from provider' under the DHCP settings the Fedora clients DO register the hostname that is put into the Hostname (optional) databox. They do NOT however store the DNS server IP address or any other records defined by the DNS server.

Is there some hidden settings or is this a bug because it isn't acceptable 'DHCP' behaviour if it isn't possible to automatically set DNS server IP addresses and at the same time register the hostname during the DHCP negotiation. Before it is said I know I can use a fixed DNS IP address but am not prepared to long term, I am also not prepared to define the Fedora clients with a 'static' IP. I am similarly not interested in playing around with scripts or any other such 'frigs' to achieve what should be a standard activity - registering a host with DNS during the DHCP negotiation.
