Slackware - 13.1 "VLC Failed To Initialize Sound Output Device" If Opened After Firefox
Aug 7, 2010
I've been having a recurring problem on Slackware64 13.1. If I open VLC (or any other media player available for Slackware) before I open Firefox, then my sound works 100% and there's never any problem, however, if I open Firefox first, and there happens to be a flash video loading, then any other media player (mplayer-plugin, Amarok or VLC) will fail to play sound. VLC tells me:
Quote: Potential ALSA version problem: VLC failed to initialize your sound output device (if any). update alsa-lib to version 1.0.24 or higher to try to fix this issue. Now, I'm happy to do that if it will actually fix the problem, though I'll have to figure out how seeing as I'm something of a n00b. The thing is that I've not really done anything to alsa except run alsaconf on my first boot, so I'm not sure if that's really the problem I've been using Slackware64 for a few months now, I'm on my first ever install and for the most part I'm loving it. Been working through the little things that have been annoying me, and for the most part I've managed to find solutions either by reading the Slackbook, by browsing LQ or by doing a quick Google search. However, I can't seem to find any reference to this specific problem anywhere and I'm not sure what I should do.

I installed slackware 13.1 x86_64 bit with multilib, and its been about a month already, I'm really enjoying slackware but I am being troubled with my nvidia card, and I need to get my 3D acceleration working. And I've been looking around the net for information and kept on trying to make my nvidia card to work but to no avail. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.

have an OpenSuSE 11.4 (Linux 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop) with XBMC (10.1) installed.During installation of SuSE, I've created a user called "xbmc" and enabled autologin for this user. After XBMC have been installed I added the following to /home/xbmc/.xinitrc - "exec /usr/bin/ck-launch-session /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/xbmc --standalone -fs"... so far so good - everything is perfectly fine..... or at least almost - when trying to play some musik I get the message "Failed to initialize audio device, Check your Audio Settings"... but if I close XBMC, log in to Gnome as root, open a terminal an su to user "xbmc" and start xbmc from commandline it works if I choose "Internal Analog Audio" in System -> System -> Audio Output. Now the spooky/funny parts appears... I check the options in Audio Output I see the following:
With Autologin:
Defaults
iec958
hdmi
HDA Intel Defaults
[code]...
When returning to auto-login - it stops working again... By the way - to be sure that it wasn't a rights-problem, I ended up changing the UID for the "xbmc"-user to "0" to ensure root-privilegies

For those that use Virtualbox on their slackware host and have a windows (xp) guest running. I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?

I have updated my Ubuntu to Lucid 10.04 from 9.10.
Although my sound disappeared in 9.10 only, I thought maybe upgrading might help, but there is no change.
I guess everything is installed fine.
But still aplay -l command shows "NO sound cards.. "
Moreover the sound preferences shows no hardware, no input and a dummy stereo output.
I have banged my head a lot trying various things written in forums and all but no success.
One more thing : When I test "osstest" , I get sound in both the earphones , but altogether there is no sound. I am very much confused.

I've had problems with my sound that i mentioned in this topic: t=1386194 but noone answered so i started trying things.I've updated ALSA and managed to partially achieve what i wanted to, but other things gets messed even worse. I've get rid of choppy sounds problems and i can get sound from few applications UNLESS firefox isn't one of them.The problem is. If i start firefox first, and open a page that is using sound for example ..... and start a vid. Sound from all other applications is somehow blocked untill i'll turn off firefox. Or, when i start a music player, open firefox, pause player, start vid on ..... i have no sound from firefox.
What's weird is that i started quakelive (a web browser based game), started a movie in vlc, and went to system > preferences > Sound / Programs using output atm tab. And there was no apps at all, and both, firefox and vlc were playing sound. (screenshot attached to show this) How can i make firefox not to 'take' whole sound output?btw.
Code:
sudo fuser -v /dev/dsp* /dev/snd/* /dev/seq*

Firefox does not open under any circumstances, it's allocated in the memory and has it's process ids, but the browser is not opened at all. There's not terminal output when ran in terminal, no dmesg, debug..., nothing.

I have just upgraded my box to be more multimedia friendly and one of the upgrades was to improve the sound card. I decided to get the Asus Xonar DX pci-e card. I have it working but the speakers are not plugged into the front output socket as the xonar dx only plays sound from side surround output. Will the sound be any better from the front out on my 2.0 speaker system or is the sound being directed out of the side surround out full quality? How to overcome this discrepancy?

I have recently installed Octave on my desktop and I am very busy with RTFM ATM.However, this manual is huge and I could not find an answer to my problem. What I basically want to do is initialize a vector like
Code:
a=[]
for i 1:100
a = [ a i ]
endfor
Now my problem is that this will call the pager and I have to hit 'q' to get my prompt back. I know I can turn it off but the screen will still get cluttered with tons of output.Is there a way to initialize 'a' quietly without any screen output?

When I run QTads, I get this message:
"Unable to initialize audio mixer: No available audio device"
I've installed libqt4-gui, libsdl-mixer1.2, libsdl-sound1.2, libqt4-network to meet the dependency requirements. I've tried the pre-made binary from the Web site (http://qtads.sourceforge.net/downloads.shtml) as well as my own compiled from source (a binary which has proven to work on other machines also with Debian).
Sound works fine on the system. What can I do?

Recently I started getting pop-up saying:
Code:
Failed to initialize
Failed to initialize packaging backend
This may occur if other packaging tools are being used simultaneously.
under more details i get:
Code:
There are unfinished transactions remaining. Please run yum-complete-transaction as root. I get to terminal, and as a root I try yum-complete-transaction, but it just says there are no unfinished transactions left. I tried to update thru yum, but this is what I get:
Code:
# yum update
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, presto, refresh-packagekit
Determining fastest mirrors .....
After lots of googling, I tried:
"yum clean all",
"yum-comlete-transaction",
"rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*" + "rpm -vv --rebuilddb" + "yum clean all",
Everything else is working well, and I am able to update with "--skip-broken", but I keep getting this pop-ups. I use fedora 12.

Since Livna went down, I've been having having problems with KPackagekit. I disabled the Libna repo by setting enabled=0 in /etc/yum.repos.d/livna.repo, and have been able to update with Yum.KPackageKit fails on me now with the message "Failed to initialize backend. This may occur if other packaging tools are used simultaneously."Then it fails to finish, which causes me to reboot before I can use Yum successfully.Under Settings, I see no indication that it knows where the repositories are, and no way to add repos.

I upgraded to a new(er) soundcard this morning on my Slack 13.1 desktop box. I ran alsoconf and got sound working in everything but Firefox flash. It's not specifically a flash problem; flash sound works just fine in Konqueror. It's a Firefox issue. I created the following login script in order to try and force the new card to be recognized as the default:
Code:
bash-4.1$ cat .asoundrc
pcm. !default {
type hw
card 1
} ctl. !default {
type hw

I don't know anything about other packaging tools - I think I don't using any. Yum works fine in terminal. Reinstall PackageKit and KPackageKit files doesn't helped me. I also try to rebuilt rpm db:

rpm -vv --rebuilddb
yum clean all
