Ubuntu :: Mounting Windows Drives With Different Filenames When Boot
Feb 4, 2010
i reboot, windows drives are mounted with different filenames (eg:first time d: was /media/disk and e: was /media/disk-1 but after reboot they got interchanged - e: was mounted in /media/disk). I cannot afford this as several apps use files from these drives and their path keeps changing after every fresh boot.

When I try to save a new or edited file via OO I get the following error
Error savind the document doc: /c/windows/doc.odt does not exist
I assume that it is a mounting error but due to my newbieness dont know how to confirm this. I see that I can not copy to the windows drives via Dolphin either.

A friend backed up an in accessible Windows 7 partition to a big (close to 1TB) external USB drive using KNOPIX. Unfortunately the umlauts and accents in the file names of his extensive music collection now appear garbled (UTF8 vs ISO xxx, I guess) when he accesses that drive from Windows. My guess is he needs to mount the two drives in a 'special way,' that takes the diacritics translation into account, on KNOPIX? Or do you have another idea what went wrong? This is the second part of a windows/linux problem I'm having. See how-does-one-mount-a-partition-in-windows-7 for the other part

I suspect this is not new but I just can't find where it was treated. Maybe someone can give me a good lead.I just want to prevent certain users from accessing CD/DVD drives and all external drives. They should be able to mount their home directories and move around within the OS but they shouldn't be able to move data away from the PC. Any Clues?

I have Windows XP installed. And I also plan to install CentOS 5.4.I have two hard drives. Hitachi 500 GB and WD 500 GB.Windows XP is intalled on first drive And I plan to install Linux on Second drive. And since i find some contradicting and not understood by me posts. I have to be sure what to do. I can install Linux, then i can edit grub. and add there something like:
title Windows
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
root (hd1,0)
chainloader +1
When its on one drive as I understand it will definately work. But if its on 2 different drives. There is a problem that windows doesn't boot from secondary drive. So I find this article witch i cannot understand. Do i have to understand it? Or its wrong and bad decision.

I just started working with Linux over the weekend. I do have a working dual booting system but it's not configured exactly how I want it to be. Currently Windows 7 Ultimate and Ubuntu are on the same hard drive but different partitions. The Windows boot screen comes up and I can select Windows or Ubuntu fine. Grub comes up when I select Ubuntu and I can successfully select any choice in the menu and it will run properly.
Everything works great now so you may wonder why I even want to keep tinkering, well, it's not working how I want it to. This is what I want it to do. I want Windows 7 on disk 0 and Ubuntu on disk 1. I want each OS to have it's own hard drive. I want Grub to be the only boot loader that comes up with the option to select Ubuntu or Windows. I want to skip the window's OS selection screen all together. I can modify Grub, I've already done some of that on my work computer.
I've been installing from windows. Should I use a CD instead? Would that accomplish my goals without doing anything special?

I'm a n00b at dual booting and I plan on installing Ubuntu 10.04 on a separate hard drive than my Windows 7 64 bit one in a dual boot situation. I have read that you can do this by unplugging the Windows hard drive, install Ubuntu on the other one, and than plug the Windows hard drive back in and everything will be fine and dandy. Is this correct? If it is, will I have to manually set the Primary and Secondary drive (in the BIOS I think?), or will it automatically do that.

I got a filename called like this:
beach---------20090808-110000.ogg
beach---------20090808-120000.ogg
It's like this:
name----------YYYYMMDD-hhmmss.ogg
Now Im splitting these hourly files into 1 minute files. I get then this output sofar properly:
beach---------20090808-110000_00.mp3
beach---------20090808-110000_01.mp3
beach---------20090808-110000_02.mp3
and so on....
the 00, 01, 02 and up are the minutes it has splitted it. Now I need a script, after it did this, to rename the file names into this:
beach---------20090808-110000.mp3
beach---------20090808-110100.mp3
beach---------20090808-110200.mp3
beach---------20090808-110300.mp3

I have a Windows XP system, and wanted to install Ubuntu to a 100 GB XT3 partition on the same drive. I was told I could chainload Ubuntu from the NT Loader menu. I booted from a Ubuntu 10.04 CD and ran the installer. It didn't find any hard drives. On a hunch, I tried the 10.04 alternate installer CD. That DID find the hard drive and partitions. I had the installer make /dev/sda7 (the XT3 partition) the root. Installation proceeded smoothly, but then the installer told me it did not see any other OS's on my drive! Why? I directed the installer to place grub on /dev/sda7 instead of the MBR.
Per the instructions I was given, I used DD to copy the first 512 bytes of /dev/sda7 to the Windows primary partition (sda1) as bootloader.lnx. But the resulting file is empty, and it won't boot. I repeated the whole process - formatting, installing FOUR times, and same results. I have no idea where GRUB was installed. It is apparently not in the MBR, because I still have my normal Windows boot. I downloaded the 10.10 alternate installer and got the same exact results. Even switched from XT3 to XT4. After two weeks of this nonsense, I still have yet to see Linux boot.

We were trying to install w7 on a reserved partition. W7 did not like the partition (whatever we tried).
Since we had 3 hard-drives, on the allocated drive we deleted all partitions and set the partition table type new to MSDOS (yast etc.....).
W7 installed fine. We did not time it, but it appeared that 11.3 installs faster plus considering 11.3 installs quite a number of applications.
There are plenty of postings re integrating W7 to the Grub-menu.
This system went through several Suse updates, hardware upgrades, basically was all over the place.... we did a "new" install of 11.3 allocating its own hard-drive.
Install......fine, and Grub entered W7 to the menu. Worked ! Mounted the windows partition to /home/yourusername/windows
So, if you really (?) need W7 and have a spare hard-drive, this maybe is a clean solution.

I am having permissions errors every time I try to mount a windows host. I have a linux server and all the windows computers can see that computer and its files, but we wanted to start backing up the linux machine to one of our other computers. so I tried to mount one of the computers. here is the sequence of events:
Code:
$mount -t cifs //192.168.1.194/Admin$ /mnt/Anita-comp
password: (I have no password so I left it blank)
Mount error (13): Permission Denied
I tried all sorts of passwords we use around the office and none of them worked.
I then decided to try mounting one of our other computers. this one looked like it worked fine. no error messages at all. (I left password blank) so I look in my filesystem and the mounted drive is not in the /mnt/Anita-comp file. What gives?

Just the last day or so, I've noticed a long pause when I boot my laptop, with lots of disk activity. dmesg says:
[Code]...
Why would there be a 15-second pause (during which the disk is slammed) between mounting root and mounting swap? During this time I see nothing but a blank purple screen, there are no cycling dots or text scroll. Is this normal and I'm just freaking out over nothing because there's no indicator of progress? I just recently found an iso for 6.06 and installed it on an old pc of mine that already had 8.04 and crunchbang on it. crunchbang is on an ext4 formatted partition.
When I setup 6.06, it asked me what i wanted to mount my drives as, so i told it to mount the ext4 system as hda1.
whenever 6.06 boots, it tries to mount hda1 but can't because it doesn't recognize ext4.
What I am asking is this: is there a deb or a package out there I can install to make 6.06 recognize ext4? if not, how can i make it so that 6.06 does not want to mount hda1?
I can get past the initial error message and into the desktop, so 6.06 does work.

It seems to be (we have experienced) that 10.10 can't handle having an older ext3 drive mounted to a folder on the 1010 ext4 drive. The files get "corrupted", but afterwards, putting the drive back into the original older 9.04 system, the files are perfectly fine again.

Update: Solution posted below. Distro: Kubuntu 10.04 AMD 64. My system automatically mounts USB devices when attached to the system. I have explicitly disabled this function in (KDE) System Settings --> Advanced --> Removable devices. It doesn't matter - as soon as a USB device is plugged in the system mounts it as root.

I have some checksums.md5 verification files from an ntfs external drive, but using windows notation: instead of /, spaces between file names (not escaped), reserved shell characters (like (, &, ', to name a few). The checksums.md5 has a bunch of checksums and filenames:
[code]...
I want to use this checksums.md5 to verify the files that I've copied to my machine: but I'm on a Linux, so I need to convert the names inside checksums.md5 from Windows to Linux to use the md5sum utility from the shell. The first line in my example would become: f12f75c1f2d1a658dc32ca6ef9ef3ffc My Windows & Files (2010)/[bak]/testing.wmv Is there some application for this (converting a file listing, from windows cmd notation, to linux shell notation) or will I need to create a bash script using sed that just "replaces" what is "wrong" with the filenames

I know this is an easy task, especially using cPanel. However I want to do this without formatting the drive, since there is sensitive data already on the hard drives. So how would I mount a hard drive, but not format/lose any of the data already on it?I've looked and everything seems to lead me to believe that I'll lose data if I do it that way.
