Ubuntu :: ProFTPD Apps - Illegal Port Command
Dec 22, 2010
I use Ubuntu 10.10 and setup Proftpd apps which I would like to use to access to my files from outside of my SOHO LAN network. This is work on LAN very well but from outside I get some error msg. However I establish connection with my Ubuntu FTP Server machine but I can't get list of files and folders on server.
I get this error msg:
227 Entering Passive Mode 89,216,116,8 243,96 --> i know what this no means: my Stat IP and the port
500 Illegal Port Command
Get Directory
FTP Port Command failed
Some Additional Information:
On the edge of SOHO LAN i use Cisco router for access to the Internet.
NAT is configured, PAT (NAT overload) is configured also.
I forward ports which I needed for FTP: 21 and 20, and passive ports 60000 - 60001.
When I use Windows OS and BUlletProof FTP server (port 21 or some custom port i.e. 65021) I only forward that port (21 or custom port i.e. 65021) and everything works great.

I set up a FTP server for a client. Running Ubuntu 10.10 server and proftpd. While setting it up, I was able to log into FTP from filezilla from in my office no problems. Now suddenly I cannot access it from inside, but I can still access it like normal from outside my network.I am getting 500 illegal port command when using activeAnd when I use passive, I get fail to retrieve directory.The server is on a DMZ, so ports should not be a problem, and according to our admin nothing has changed within our firewall

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10, and am trying to get proftpd to listen on a port other than 22. I've modified the proftpd.conf file, as well as adding the desired port to my /etc/services file, yet if I try anything other than port 22, the connection is refused.

I'm not that great with mailservers, and just been thrown a curveball with a MS Exchange environment for which there is apparently no solution... yeah, right. But is there a workaround?
The problem is that the site mail (SMTP) needs to be sent via port 26 instead of the commonly used 25. Port 25 is mapped to a mailfilter, which apparently causes havoc with some of the mail, and the techs that have been on site trying to coax the Exchange server to co-operate have said that the only way would be to get rid of the filter.
The problem is that there are number of apps that are unable to have the outgoing port changed and so keep sending mail out on port 25.
I look after the Unix/Linux side of things at work, and I was wondering if there was an easy way to set up a Ubuntu box to receive mail on port 25 and just forward it to the MS box on port 26? So, in other words (and I hope this makes sense): monitor port 25, and forward whatever comes in on port 25 to the server on port 26. Simple portforwarding, or is it? What steps do I need to take?

I'm experiencing a peculiar problem with Fedora 12. There is a ten-second delay when various command-line applications (e.g. ssh, wget) connect to remote machines for the first time. The delay is also seen when the remote machine name does not exist.Subsequent connections to the same remote machine are immediate.This isn't a DNS delay - the host and dig commands return immediately, for both existing and non-existant hostnames. It's not a reverse DNS lookup by the remote machine either: other Fedora 10 machines do not experience this delay and neither did my two Fedora 12 machines when they were running Fedora 10.
time this was something to do with nscd, the name service caching daemon. Stopping nscd changes the delay to five seconds, but subsequent connections are no longer immediate - there is again a 5 second delay. This implies that nscd is caching the names correctly.The delays are always precisely 10 seconds, or 5 seconds when nscd is not running. I have confirmed this with the time command. There appears to be no odd network traffic (tested with tcpdump) and nscd appears to be running normally. I've confirmed this with a Fedora 12 live CD as well - nscd is not started at boot, but once started, the machine behaves in exactly the way described above.

I'm using a java application that runs as an interactive command line (in a terminal). My problem is that it's rather unfriendly as an interaction mode as it's minimalistic: it doesn't allow going to and fro with arrows, there's no history and so on. So I have to type all commands every time and have to retype it if I missed something at the beginning of the line, or I have to copy and paste from a txt editor. The strange thing is that I have seen the same application running on a Windows box and allowing for all the sugar. So I'm not sure if it's because of the shell script I run (as opposed to the .bat) or whether it has to do with system or profile settings in my shell.
For information, the shell script starts with:
Code:
#!bin/sh
I've replaced it with:
Code:
#!bin/bash
In hope I would have something closer to my normal terminal. The app runs but it doesn't change anything to the interactive mode. I'm rather clueless regarding sh/bash and so on. I've seen the manuals but I'm not entirely at home understanding and using their options. I know that there's a .bashrc and perhaps something like a profile somewhere, but I don't really know how to do things with these without risking messing up.

I've been trying to install the latest updates on my Ubuntu 10.10 system but keep getting the same error in Update Manager and the terminal:
Code:
dpkg: file triggers record mentions illegal package name I've tried running sudo dpkg --configure -a and sudo apt-get upgrade -f after running sudo apt-get update but to no avail.
After searching the forum and google I haven't been able to find this issue or a solution to a similar issue that works for my problem.

I just upgraded Fedora 10 to Fedora 11. When I rebooted I just had a flashing cursor. So I typed Ctrl-Alt-F2 to open a console window on booting. That worked fine. I was going to edit xorg.conf because I suspected the problem was related to haveing installed the latest Linux NVIDIA drivers (and custom kernal) in Fedora 10 before upgrading to Fedora 11. But, I decided to edit the run level in /etc/inittab first. Unfortunately, I fat fingered run level 3 to runlevel 333. No when booting I get hung up with the error "telinit: illegal run level 333". When I try to use Ctrl-Alt-F2 to open a console window on booting now it doesn't work. How to get into a console window with this error?

I have a SUSE mail server where I have user names like john.doe. And so the email address looks like [URL]..Now I move the server to slackware and I cannot create such users, it shows the error (I use adduser command): User 'john.doe' contains illegal characters (period/dot); please choose another What can be the best (simplest) solution to preserve my email addresses as they are. I also would like to preserve the user-names used for email authentication, because there are lot of mail user clients already using those logins. What is the point in that the dot is illegal in user names? I guess that there is a good reason to this but I would like to know what it is.

Tomorrow I decided to dedicate 100% of my disk to opensuse! So I backed up the files from the remaining windows partition, deleted them and expanded the /home partition. Well, I ran into some problems during first boot. I referred to an article at the wiki and fixed it. Although I did some small fixing manually at the fstab file. The system booted! But I can't browse anywhere outside the local network! At this forum I found some info regarding the dmesg |tail command. Here is my output:
