I recently moved and didnt have internet. Out of a fit of boredom i decided to get me Ubuntu 10.10 disk and dual boot. My laptop has a SD slot in the front of it that has never been used so i decided that itd be cool to have ubuntu on an SD card that i could boot any time. I used the default installer to install it onto the SD card instead of using the Universal USB Installer (i imagine this is where i went wrong). It installed and everything works fine and when i boot up it lets me choose between Linux and Windows when the SD card is inserted. When it is not i get this screen http://imgur.com/gg63v. The only really problem is me worrying that the sd card will be lossed or get broke and i will no longer be able to access Windows. Is there anyway i can set the windows boot loader back t the default bootloader (i think this is what need to be done i may be completely wrong>

I have a Toshiba NB305 on which I've installed 10.04 and then 10.10. I set it up to dual boot windows, but windows has never booted. I get a quick blue screen, and then it goes back to the grub menu. Ubuntu boots just fine. I occasionally have reason to boot into Windows. So it would be nice to get it working. Here's the output from boot_info_script.

I have a gateway laptop that I have attempted to dual boot, but the computer only sees the Ubuntu OS and the Vista Windows Recovery Partition. (Actually, gnome reports 3 separate Ubuntu OSs... part of the problem?)
When I type fdisk -l, I get the following message code...

Recently I decided I wanted to try installing Ubuntu 8.10 inside of my Vista Home Premium x64 system.Ubuntu installs correctly, but when I try booting into Ubuntu from the boot screen, I get the black screen that tells me it's loading several components of the system, and then it suddenly stops at "Starting bluetooth..." or something of that general nature.

I figured I would begin delving more into the open source environment by dual booting fedora and windows xp pro. Windows xp WAS already installed on the laptop, so I went through the steps to get fedora installed. Everything appeared to be working fine. Fedora came up nicely, and then I tried to boot windows (using grub boot loader). The Windows splash screen appeared, making me think things were fine. But suddenly the screen went black, with the computer going through a restart. This happened every time I tried to boot windows. So I began scouring the web to see if someone had a similar problem. I tried numerous things, but none of them worked. Of them, this appears to have gotten me farther than anything:
Going into grub I changed: rootnoverify (hd0,0)
to: rootnoverify (hd0,1)
Everything else remained the same. When I made this change, the computer went through Ramdisk, and the Toshiba recovery tool. Then two dialog windows appear in secession.
The first stating: Windows cannot find c:inerrordialog.exe
The second stating: Windows cannot find c:inootpriority.exe
I stumbled across information about the recovery console tool. Well, since my laptop has an OEM installation, there is no recovery console tool. But eventually, I was able to find one that I could download. (In case anyone is interested, here is the link for the [URL]
I burned the image to a cd on another computer, and then attempted to boot to the console from the cd/dvd drive on the laptop. But the system crashed, with the customary blue screen. I was hoping to be able to execute the chdsk command to repair whatever damage there might be, but this problem occurs each time I run the image. Fortunately I backed stuff up before this. I'm just hoping that I won't have to go through the ugly process of restoring everything because it's a lot to restore.

Since 10.10 is not out yet, I think I'm going to try Mint. (or possibly Lubuntu - I have both ISOs copied to CD already)
Question is: Is it possible to install the new OS on the partition that now contains Ubuntu, without disturbing my Windows Vista partition? (I just need Vista for occasional use of MagicJack- otherwise I'd gladly just wipe the whole disk)
Can I just boot my Ubuntu live CD and run Disk Utility and delete the Ubuntu partition? (I prefer to use GUI rather than CLI).

I recently started experimenting with Ubuntu 8.10 and I've spent the last week mostly getting the HDD partitions and desktop to my liking so I have not installed many actual programs yet. As of this last Saturday ( 11-29-2008 ) my Keyboard (PS/2 connection) worked fine whether booted into Ubuntu or XP and worked in grub as well. I discovered on Sunday the 30th that when booted into XP my keyboard no longer worked(but my USB mouse works). The keyboard still works fine in Grub and in Ubuntu but no amount of keypressing works when booted into XP. My device manager indicates the driver has been corrupted or something (Code 39 error) and indicates the driver files are i8042prt.sys and kbdclass.sys.
Here's a list of the things I've tried so far:Tried swapping in a USB keyboard; I've tried updating the drivers in Device Manager; Tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers in Device Manager; I tried the "uninstall driver, shutdown, unplug keyboard, reboot, shutdown, plug keyboard back in and reboot" routine; deleting those two files and letting them be rebuilt at boot; using the recovery console to copy them from the XP install CD to the System32/Drivers folder and as a last resort I tried a repair install only to find when asked to enter the CoA code the keyboard still did not work.
I obviously borked something on the Ubuntu side that's causing a conflicting with those drivers on the XP side but I'm at a loss as to what that might be. The only thing I can remember installing since the last time the keyboard worked was maybe Wine, but for sure I did a test install of my Baldur's Gate+ToSC disc and I attempted to install Daemon Tools Lite too. I've since uninstalled those two programs and even Wine itself without results. The only other thing I can think of is that I've been messing around with the /fstab file a lot trying to get all my drives/partitions to mount up at boot like I want but I don't know how that would impact the keyboard drivers.

I tried unsuccessfully to install what I thought was windows in a virtualbox. After a ton of reading, I realized I don't actually have windows, but the Toshiba recovery discs that have windows on them. I was initially able to run Mint within Windows, but what I would rather do until I can buy windows (bleh) is dual boot. Will this recovery software allow me to partition the hard drive?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A45-S120
1.26 Ghz Celeron
1.256 GB Ram
40 GB HD
I am trying to use a Toshiba Recovery CD to dual boot 2 versions of Windows XP on the same hard drive. I partitioned my hard drive with GParted, but when I go to do the 2nd install, it says the entire hard drive will be erased. I read in another forum that it may be possible to make the 1st partition invisible or non-bootable;[URL]...Is this possible? I can choose the flag in GParted to "hidden," but I am worried, because if GParted can see the partition, then perhaps the Toshiba Recovery CD can too.
Also, I have several other partitions running Linux, and for some reason GParted won't allow me to select the flag hidden - which wouldn't be the end of the world as I recently installed those linux partitions, but most importantly, I don't want to loose my primary XP partition.
My Toshiba Recovery CD also has Office and Works on it, so I want to at least use this to dual boot 2 versions of Windows XP on the same hard drive. What would be the best way to change the master boot record or hide the other partitions and use the recovery CD?

in a nutshell im trying to share 2 HDD's in same machine with several windows machines1. auto login so no welcome screen.2. auto mount the drives3. share the drives with/without password 1 is fine, i did resolve issue 2 with "storage device manager" but no matter what i do i cant get it to load correctly as i cant remove the option "mount file system in read only mode" so i cant create/move/delete anything. i did also change the owner for when it mounts off root to my user, but still no avail.and i can share the drives using ubuntu, but i also have samba.not important
Code:also another 2 Q's for after i have sorted this, i need ubuntu to shut down when i simplypress the off button as this will have no mouse, keyboard or TFT attached.so then i can simply press the on button and within a min or so i can just connect to my 'network drives' and then also to enable a remote desktop viewer, i did try the inbuilt 1 but couldnt connect with my win 7 machines

I have recently set up a dual boot comp running Windows 7 and Fedora 13 (test) and began noticing that after a short while, was taking forever to access web pages. When I look at my router which is running DD-WRT I noticed my active connections was over 500 whereas should only be around 200 maybe or less. This does not occur under windows,so am not sure where to begin.box is running 64 bit quad core processor.

I boot some Slackware with PXE. All work fine except i can't fix the client lockd ports.NFS is compiled inside the kernel, so all modprobe.d options are useless. But rpcinfo -p on the client side shows me totally different ports. On the NFS server, the ports are ok, as i appended lines in /etc/lilo.conf Server and client kernels/modules are identical.

I have a number of diskless hosts which are to bootth PXE and mount their root filesystem on an NFS share. Most of the NFS share will be common to to all of the diskless hosts. No problem with that part.I also need part of the NFS shared filesystem to be unique to each individual host. The only difference between the hosts is the ethernet MAC. I use it in the DHCP server to key a specific unique IP to each host. I would like to be able to use either the MAC, or the IP, or any other unique identifier that can be derived very early in the boot process to access a filesystem or directory that is unique to each diskless host.
I need/want to do this because I need/want to isolate all of the system maintenance to one small part of the boot host. Modifying the hardware (these are VME CPUs) in any way is not an option; they must be field swappable, with all maintenance isolated to the boot host(s).I know I could run ifconfig and parse its output to derive an IP &/or MAC, but that seems a bit kludgey and fragile. The DHCP server is presently assigning IPs. I know I can arrange to pass a unique option value via the DHCP server, but don't know if or how this can be retrieved on the diskless nodes. I am presently passing the 'root=' kernel argument from the bootloader, but I don't think there is any way to pass other filesystem information using that mechanism.
I know I can pass some kernel arguments from the bootloader, but there doesn't seem to be any generic message that can be retrieved in userspace as part of the boot process. I've scanned around in the /proc filesystem, looking for the IP or anything else that seems to uniquely identify the host, but don't see anything there, either. The init process has not yet been cast in stone, but is very likely to be a BusyBox built-in

Here is an overview of my system, consisting of two computers, a D-Link router and a ZyTel 660 DSL modem/router. Computer One (Comp1) is dual booting XP and Ubuntu 8.04. Computer Two (Comp2) is booting only Ubuntu 8.04. For years, I had been running and networking both of these computers with XP. Both have been using static IPs. In order to have Static IPs and forward certain ports, I had to configure the D-Link router as an Access Point and use the ZyTel as the defacto router for the network.
The Static IP info for the two computers is:
Comp1
IP ADR 192.168.2.20

I feel I am really really close at getting this connected.
The native ath9k driver did not work. I blacklisted this driver and then proceeded to load a windows driver that came with the card through ndiswrapper.
The system sees my wireless router but I could not get connected to the router. I get the circle of death of it trying to connect though.
I then replaced the Network Manager with Wicd.
I try and connect, after setting the preshared key, and it stops at the very end saying it could not obtain an IP address.
I then try to set a static IP, and at the very end it comes back with, "could not contact wireless access point".
I feel I am so close to getting this connected I just don't know if it is a setting on my router I need to change or to look for a different driver. Driver should be fine but I'm no expert.
I have two other computers wireless'ly connected to this router currently and one of them is connected via a dual boot, Ubuntu and Win7, so at the very least these two computers don't have any issues connecting to the router.
Or I am just going to live with WinXP installed on it instead. BTW: I had no problems getting a wireless connection from this laptop when I had WinXP installed, but I have since wiped it off with a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10. Goes to show how much I want to rid myself of Windows on the laptop.
I even installed 8.04 to see if I could make a connection with that version but to no avail I could not. I have since reloaded 9.10.

I just did an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and now I can't boot into Windows 7 on this dual boot desktop. I usually do a clean install but with a laptop and desktop a copy of Windows 7 and Ubuntu on each machine it's getting very tiring with 4 os's so opted for the upgrade this time.
During the installation there was a window that game up about upgrading grub and what devices to install it on. The help box was not very complete and seemed to say to click all the check boxes which included the main drive and it's partitions including windows. During the install somewhere it said something like grub could not be installed on one of the devices which I think was sda6 which is probably the Windows 7 partition.
So how would I get the option of booting into Windows 7 on startup as now I only get a blank black screen when I click on the Windows 7 option upon bootup? I hope I don't have to reinstall one or both os's again from scratch as this is becoming to much work to do on two systems every 6 months, especially with the amount of programs I have installed.

getting the wireless chipset (Realtek 8176) to work, but finally got the WLAN to show up. Now, it seems as though it will recognize my WLAN and SSID, ask for my WPA password, but never connect. I connect fine over wired ethernet. It will not connect wirelessly to an unsecured network either. I previously had Jolicloud installed on my netbook, and my wireless worked out of the box with no setup, but I really didn't like the lack of application support with Jolicloud. I ended up in dependency hell just trying to update Banshee for use with my iPod.
