Ubuntu Servers :: 64AMD Version Will Work With An Intel Xeon Processor

Dec 19, 2010

I've downloaded the Ubuntu Server 64AMD version. Will this work with an Intel Xeon processor? I've an old SuperMicro 1U Server X5DPR-8G2+ Xeon Dual 2.8GHz/1GB I'd like to use. Will Ubuntu Server work with this or do I need the 32bit version?

Server :: Which Intel Processor To Run A Server On - Xeon Or Core I5

Aug 23, 2010

I would like to run my own server, and I'm thinking of buying a dedicated machine to run it on. I checked out the dell website for a cheap machine to run it on (I don't need high performance - just a personal file server running a few hard drives, and a web/mail server). I noticed that they have some cheap models in their server line that are as cheap as a desktop. Compare:

[URL]

The main difference I see between the desktops and the servers is the use of the Core or Xeon processor, and also, the servers tend to have lower RAM.if I am looking for value, should I opt for a low end desktop or a low end server to run a personal server? Also, what advantage does the Xeon processors and Dell server line have over the desktop models that make it better for running a server?

Programming :: AMD CPU Generating Way More System Load Than Intel Xeon CPU?

Oct 11, 2010

I am running some muti-threaded code that uses a lot of memory (~6GB). I have it compiled on a cluster that uses Xeon 5160 quad core CPUs with 4MB cache/core, 8GB of RAM and kernel 2.6.18 (x86_64) and I have also the same code compiled on another cluster that uses Opteron 2214 quad core CPUs with 1MB cache/core, 8GB of RAM and kernel 2.6.28 (x86_64). On the Intel cluster the code generates barely any system load when I look on top but on the AMD cluster it can generate over 50% of system load. On the intel machines my process can generate a constant load of 3, while the load generated by the process on the AMD machines is about 1.6.

Does anybody know what could cause this? Could it be the version of the kernel or the difference between the CPUs (for example, the much smaller cache of the AMD CPUS)? My software and all its dependencies are the same on both clusters. I am also using the exact same version of GCC to compile everything.

Debian Configuration :: Intel Turbo Mode Not Kicking In On Nehalem Xeon?

Mar 9, 2010

I've got a dual Xeon 5570 (Nehalem) server. It clocks down properly, but never, under any circumstances that I've found, clocks up past its TSC. Even when running basically nothing but cat /dev/zero > /dev/null, nothing gets clocked higher than the TSC. Below is the turbostat output, which clearly knows what the hardware is actually capable of, but it never actually achieves it. I'm running Lenny, with backported kernel 2.6.30-bpo.2-amd64. I tried the 2.6.32 backport and there wasn't any difference. know where I should look next? BIOS settings? Do I need to change some kernel option and recompile?

# ./turbostat
Nehalem multiplier 22, TSC frequency 2933 MHz
Nehalem 4 cores active: 24 mult, max turbo frequency = 3200 MHz
Nehalem 3 cores active: 24 mult, max turbo frequency = 3200 MHz
Nehalem 2 cores active: 25 mult, max turbo frequency = 3333 MHz
Nehalem 1 core active: 25 mult, max turbo frequency = 3333 MHz

General :: Intel Celeron Processor 32bit To 64bit?

Jan 31, 2011

On my 2 year old laptop I have an Intel Celeron Processor (The one made in June something of 2008) and last night I finally decided to tear it apart. My reasoning was, that I am going to buy a new laptop soon (I want a 64 bit system ) and lo and behold, my celeron processor has 2 cores on the chip itself. I ran several software tests on it in Linux (mostly just profiling and etc.) then I ran a full diagnostic on it and turns out that the second core was never used in any of it. So I looked over it through a magnifying glass and found a pin that was blocking a section from passing anything to this other core. I pulled the pin out and popped my processor in my laptop. Windows refused to boot at first except into Safe Mode because of a hardware change. It was there that my PC was re-evaluated and while previously I had a 3.5 out of 5.0 according to Vista, I know have a 4.1/5.0 thus Aero now was enabled. I then tried something crazy, I popped in the Arch64 net-install disk and VIOLA!!! It loaded and installed Arch64 successfully. Thus, I converted what was a 32 bit processor into a now 64 bit processor by (carefully) removing a pin. After doing research it seems other people found this out too and am wondering to myself, if Intel created this cheap of a 64bit processor, why didn't they market it like that and/or use this as their low-end 64 bit processor? It's all very fishy to me and I really don't know what to make of it.

As an update, I have re-soldered the pin on and Windows still sees the 2nd core. Arch64 however refuses to boot because it's trying to boot 64bit instructions on a 32bit processor again. It seems that since Windows saw that it was there, it has loaded a new driver (some weird "Intel Blah blah blah" [didn't write it down and don't feel like rebooting, sorry] ) that wasn't loaded before. It's still running Vista 32bit (NOT going to upgrade), but it still sees that the other core is there.

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Configure Kernel For A Many-processor Machine

Jan 2, 2011

I have Ubuntu 10.10 Server installed on a 32 core machine(quad AMD Magny Cours 6128 ), and I was wondering what kernel configuration would optimize its performance? So far, I have only found the obvious configurations that are checked off:

1) Processor type and features ---> Support for big SMP systems with more than 8 CPUs
2) Processor type and features ---> Maximum num of CPUs
3) Multi-core scheduler support

Is there anything else I should consider?I plan on running multi-threaded programs with moderate amount of inter-processor communication, shouldn't there be some options related to the shared memory?

OpenSUSE :: New MB And Processor And Gzip/bzip2 Does Not Work Anymore

Jun 22, 2010

I am using suse for a long time but I did not yet experience this strange error:

I installed 11.2 and now 11.3RC1 on a new HW: ASUS M4N72-E with AMD Phenom2 X4 965, 8GB Memory, standard settings.

I experienced unusual errors when copying large files to the new system with scp/ssh (connection broken).

Even stranger I could not read .tgz files created on the older machine, same OS 11.2, but MB ASUS M2N32-SLI with AMD Phenom X4 9850

Testing further reveals that if I create a .gz file from the same source it produces every time a different output:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3875041280 Jun 21 01:51 wwtest.tar
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1326141906 Jun 21 01:55 wwtest1.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1326137319 Jun 21 03:26 wwtest2.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1326146273 Jun 22 07:32 wwtest3.tar.gz

[Code].....

I never saw something like it, I guess it must be something with the underlying library not working on the new processor. I tried with slower memory speed, newest BIOS etc ...always the same errors. Other wise the system works absolutely stable.

When I compare the generated files with one created on the older system it looks like there are single bits missing in a random number of bites.
