As the title says the option in the SCREENSAVER(Power Management Preferences)Put display to sleep when inactive for is not working. I have selected 2 minutes, and even after 1 hour it will not shutdown the display.
View 3 RepliesI'm running Ubuntu 9.10, Dell Inspiron 1545. I have the NDISwrapper installed, and the driver shows up in "Hardware Drivers" as activated (Broadcom STA wireless driver) it also shows up in "Windows Wireless Drivers" (bcmwl6) but it still won't allow me to connect wirelessly.

I have a dual boot with Windows 7, installed Ubunto with the help of Wubi installer. View 7 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, but I can't connected to the Internet with a wired or wireless connection. I have a BT Home Hub 2 wireless router. I can connect to the Internet when running Windows Vista, but not with Ubuntu.
I tried installing the Broadcom STA driver off of the live disk, which initially seemed to work. However, I still couldn't connect to the Internet and when I clicked on System > Administration > Hardware Drivers, there weren't any proprietary drivers to install or that had been installed. Also, when I reboot, Ubuntu tries to connect to my network automatically but always fails. That's what makes me think that a driver has been installed, but just isn't the right one or isn't working.
i was just wondering if anyone could help me with my webcam. I'm unsure if it was detected during the instalation and do not know how to turn it on if it was.

My questions are can I use a live cd if available for fedora 12 and then install it on my laptop like we can do for ubuntu. Are all the drivers available automatically installed during installation.
The problem I faced my last installation with fedora 11 was that I could not get the wireless installed and I was unsuccessful in installing the wireless drivers using ndis wrapper or b43-legacy or something.
Can you give me a detailed link which could allow me to install the wireless drivers and also the video drivers for my laptop. The problem I am facing with my ubuntu 10.04 is that it is slow, the flash plugin is worst i guess, some of the flash videos are very slow.
Taking all of these into account can someone suggest me a good operating system. I am pretty much interested in learning linux rather than just using it like a windows operating system. I am considering, fedora 12, suse 11.2, linuxmint, centos, mandriva. Which one could be a best possible for my installation.
As I am not willing to purchase a dvd for these linux flavors can I use my flashdrive to install.
How can I install Linux Red Hat 9.2 on my new dell Inspiron 1545. When I want to installed it, it will get to a stage and will ask me of drivers. But on my desktop I don't have such problem.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI've got a Dell Inspiron 1545 with wireless card Dell wireless 1397 802.11g. It was working fine with Windows and Ubuntu 9.04 (I've got the two OS installed alongside). But as soon as I upgraded my Ubuntu to version 10.4 I realised it lost its wireless connection! I updated the system, the hardware driver for Broadcom STA wireless driver is activated and in use (according to Ubuntu Hardware drivers checker) but the fact is that I can only connect on the Internet if I hook the net cable on it, when I run the mouse over internet connection icon at the topright side of the monitor I see "no network" message and when I left click on it the option "wireless network" it's disabled and gray. How can I get my wireless card back working?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card and a Marvell Yukon 88e8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller, and I cannot for the life of me get the internet to connect. I've tried both wired and wireless connection. I have a PPoE connection through a Verizon FIOS Actiontek router I believe, though the PPoE part may be wrong, I had one five years ago when I first got their internet so they may have changed it. Point is that the ethernet and internet won't work, and without a working ethernet I can't fetch the right drivers for anything.
I had also tried plain ubuntu 10.04 and couldn't get them to work then either. It said 'disconnected' at first, and then said 'device not ready' There is no hardware switch but there is a key toggle. It doesn't seem to matter what state the wireless was in before booting into Ubuntu Studio, so I'm lost as to where to even start. Even though the network manager isn't there like in regular ubuntu, I assume there will be a simple way to connect to the internet once the drivers are found, right?
I've seen issues and read about fixing them, but usually it uses an ethernet connection to fix the wifi connection and, being new to linux (<50 hours worth of experience lifetime), all I managed to do trying to fix it myself was screw up the installation to the point where the laptop couldn't access the home folder and I had to reinstall. Other than that, I am usually very good at following instructions, as long as they apply to my laptop's issue I guess
The only other issue is minor, I can't seem to control the USB mouse I have, but the trackpad works fine so it's no big deal, probably a matter of downloading the mouse driver once the internet works.
Currently I do have internet access via the same laptop while booting Windows 7 (I installed Ubuntu Studio 10.04 on a 10GB Partition with the idea of using an external HD for most data storage).
Oh and it is a 64-bit machine, the Studio version I installed is 32-bit.
I have Dell Inspiron 1545. It works fine on wired but fails on wireless.
I am using wicd as an interface.
It always comes up with the following error: Connection Failed: Bad password.
I have checked the passwords in both wicd and the router.
They seem to be the same. Am I missing something ?

I have a problem with my laptop Dell Inspiron 1525 wireless on Jessie Cinnamon.
I have installed the b43 firmware and after that everything seemed working but just for a few seconds.
I have tried to reboot and after that I can't browse the internet just for a few seconds and after that Iceweasel loading and loading and nothing's happening.
I can't surf on the net just with cable but the wifi setup shows everything is okay 95% signal strength and connected.
Also tried reinstall the firmware and reboot and it's all the same after.
I can easily use my wifi with my smartphone too.

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Arch Linux with an Intel 965 GM video chipset (from dmesg). I'm using the xf86-video-intel driver, and Xorg (using xfce4) works flawlessly, including compositing. Before getting into details about the HDMI, I'd like to ask why I don't gave an xorg.conf.d/10-moniter.conf, it's not there, just evdev, quirks, and synaptics (because I figured that moniter.conf could be modified to include HDMI). So, basically when I'm on my XFCE4 desktop, I plug in the HDMI cable and to the TV, and on windows, it would would work, but on Arch the TV just says: "No input", and my desktop just stays the same, so absolutely nothing happens. If I have it connected upon bootup, the HDMI displays (the BIOS and grub menu on the TV) until I select to boot Arch linux on Grub, then the tv screen goes blank. I've tried Googling this but I got no decent results, just a bunch of random posts of audio not working with Nvidia.
PS - I did dmesg and lspci (with grep HDMI) and no results, so maybe it doesn't even recognize it, but then what do I do? There's obviously Linux support for HDMI...
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 (Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit) that I use as my main comp, and a Dell Latitude C800 (currently Slackware 12.1) that just sits on my desk all day.I want to do two things (the second one isn't as big of a deal, but I really want to do the first):
1)I want to plug in my external hard drives into the Latitude and be able to link the Inspiron to the Latitude via ethernet cable and access/modify the files on the Latitude and external HDs using the Inspiron. Also I would like to have apache running on the Latitude so that when I'm connected, I can get to a custom site I've made for displaying the contents of said HDs.
2)I would like to be able to extend my desktop from the Inspiron onto the Latitude while still doing the above if possible. I figure with X it must be possible, but I don't know how to go about doing it and I only want to do that if I can get the first part working.
I installed openSUSE 11.4 in my laptop as dual boot.But wireless drivers are not working.Please give a suggestion to work wifi.

It used to work fine before when i was using ubuntu 9.04 and even after i updated to 9.10, but then that happened. I added the notification area back to the panel but now ubuntu cannot even find any wireless networks. When i connect a LAN cable to my laptop the internet works fine, but the wireless networks area in the network icon is grayed out and it doesn't show any wireless networks. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop and my network card is Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2915ABG [Calexico2] Network Connection (rev 05).

Things seem to install fine, but the wireless network remains unavailable (wireless network is disabled).
If someone can walk me through the trouble-shooting process, I tried the solution suggested in the sticky at the top too but no luck.
I just installed open suse 11.2 on a dell inspiron 6000 and i can not get the wifi card to work. Yast sees it, but that's about it. Ethernet works fine- hence the post.... any ideas? Model: intel pro wireless 2915abg calexico2.

The only problem I've had so far seems to be a common one but I haven't found a specific solution for a dell inspiron 700m. I have sound through the headphones but not through the laptop internal speakers. I've played with the alsamixer settings endlessly but no success, and I'm 99% sure that it's not an issue with the hardware or speaker wiring. I suspect I need to add an 'options snd-hda-intel model=xxxxx' line to alsa-base but not sure what argument to use.

I have installed Fedora12 on Dell Inspiron laptop. Here are my key details of my laptop.

I am new to Linux. About 72 hours in, and I must say. I am quite impressed. Except for a small issue. I cannot seem to figure out how to get my wireless card working. I have used the bcm43xx technique with no avail. And am working on ndswrapper. The good news is I think I have the .sys file that works. But I don't have the .inf. However any way I could make this work would be great. Below I have posted my lspci stats.

I have made sure the card is not muted using kmix, alsamixer, and running alsaunmute 0. It was working for some time and just stopped. I am not sure if getting rdesktop to work on the laptop caused the issue or not since that seems to be the last major thing I did. (missing my sipie.py). This is what I am working with:

ok basically i have a new dell inspiron n5010 with a broadcom 4313 wifi card. it doesnt work with ubuntu studio 10.10. I have the drivers all installed and it works on ethernet with the broadcom STA proprietry driver. if i disable this driver the eth doesnt work. but the driver shows its working (screenshot-1).
There is no pop up or anything in the task bar for detected wifi. i open the network settings and it shows up with a wifi option but i have to go into properties and manually type in what i have "the_den_meribel". which didn't work. (screenshot-2).
i have tried the other driver broadcom-sta-common and that doesnt make it work either. screenshot-3. i did try to install the "lp-pphhy" or whatever it is (seacrh for firmware-b43 in synaptic).

I just installed the 64-bit Kubuntu 11.04 and i've been having some issues getting the wifi to work. At first I went to additional drivers and activated the STA driver and restarted. After restarting when I went into the network manager and any option for wireless was disabled.

I've just installed brand new Debian 6 on an oldish Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop. This features an XGI Volari XP5 video card, which I can see reported in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
When Debian boots it will only run in command line mode. Running startx hangs up the whole system and just displays a black screen with a few vertical stripes in different colours of dark green.
the default vesa driver for X.org doesn't play very well with the XGI video card.
I've tried running
X -configure
then
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
This correctly detects the XGI Volari XP5 card (if you look through the xorg.conf) but running the second X command still hangs up the system.
X runs fine under Knoppix, but most recent Ubuntu distros I've tried actually hung up after the initial text-based startup section, so presumably died as soon as X started up. Debian's graphical installer worked fine, however.
