General :: What Version Is Better For An Old Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop
Feb 14, 2011What Linux version should i get if i want to revive an old laptop? Im talking about a Dell Inspiron 1501, with a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+789 MHz, 448 MB RAM, running on Windows XP 2002 professional edition.

Jun 19, 2009I have installed F11 on my Dell Inspiron 1501. I tried to get the Broadcom 4311 wireless card to work by following the instructions for installing the Broadcom driver from this link: [url].
That resulted in the following errors when I gave the command:

I removed the broadcom-wl package and installed the autoen package from DangerMouse. After rebooting wireless works but I still get the same errors when I give the command:

I had to disable encryption on the router to connect, but I guess that's a compromise I'll have to make right now. I will work on that some more after I get these error messages straightened out:

Note that wireless does seem to be working (though without encryption) despite the error messages. And I got these same error messages with the Broadcom driver but I could not get wireless working.

May 5, 2009I am having a little trouble connecting to my wireless network. Running Fedora 10 32 bit.I'm trying to connect to a hidden wireless network. I updated the firmware for my driver but apparantly the driver is still not working. Broadcom has a driver from their website for Linux 32 bit systems. Should I attempt to install it? I read a post where the driver is built into the system kernel. If so I would need to blacklist the one of the drivers. Correct?

shows dell-wifi hard blocked no soft blocked no.
The fn plus F2 keys toggle status between blocked no and blocked yes, but network manager still can't see network. I've tried removing the Broadcom STA driver - no joy.

I am using wicd as an interface.
It always comes up with the following error: Connection Failed: Bad password.
I have checked the passwords in both wicd and the router.
They seem to be the same. Am I missing something ?

Jun 11, 2010These problems just started the last couple of days but I have been using Lucid 10.04 for a month now. My wireless Signal varies in strength wildly. I sitting at home, not 20 feet from my router. I never had these problems before Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04. I am running both Network Manager and Wicd.
Errors:
1. Wicd states "Wrong Password" which is not true.
2. Dropping off-line for no reason, sometimes 3 or 4 times a minute and sometimes it works fine for hours.

Oct 9, 2010I am new to Linux. About 72 hours in, and I must say. I am quite impressed. Except for a small issue. I cannot seem to figure out how to get my wireless card working. I have used the bcm43xx technique with no avail. And am working on ndswrapper. The good news is I think I have the .sys file that works. But I don't have the .inf. I have the required drivers from this website: Broadcom.com - 802.11 Linux STA driver As far as I can tell I have followed all the instructions given by the readme, I have all kernel packages that I had understood to be required but when I try to make the Makefile I am given this:

May 12, 2010I am using Ubuntu right now. But I wanted to install Fedora 12 on my Dell inspiron 1545 laptop. My questions are can I use a live cd if available for fedora 12 and then install it on my laptop like we can do for ubuntu. Are all the drivers available automatically installed during installation.
The problem I faced my last installation with fedora 11 was that I could not get the wireless installed and I was unsuccessful in installing the wireless drivers using ndis wrapper or b43-legacy or something.
Can you give me a detailed link which could allow me to install the wireless drivers and also the video drivers for my laptop. The problem I am facing with my ubuntu 10.04 is that it is slow, the flash plugin is worst i guess, some of the flash videos are very slow.
Taking all of these into account can someone suggest me a good operating system. I am pretty much interested in learning linux rather than just using it like a windows operating system. I am considering, fedora 12, suse 11.2, linuxmint, centos, mandriva. Which one could be a best possible for my installation.
As I am not willing to purchase a dvd for these linux flavors can I use my flashdrive to install.

Jun 8, 2010I installed REL 5.5 on this Dell laptop (originally win 7) and everything works ok except when i get to the login GUI the LCD brightness (or lack of) sets to it's lowest so i have to click the f5 button to brighten the screen. If I log out, the LCD resets to the dimmest setting (can hardly make out the login GUI) and again I have to click on f5. I believe I need to update the BIOS but I don't know how. The BIOS update I dound on-line if a xxx.exe file.

Feb 12, 2011I've just installed brand new Debian 6 on an oldish Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop. This features an XGI Volari XP5 video card, which I can see reported in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
When Debian boots it will only run in command line mode. Running startx hangs up the whole system and just displays a black screen with a few vertical stripes in different colours of dark green.
the default vesa driver for X.org doesn't play very well with the XGI video card.
I've tried running
X -configure
then
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
This correctly detects the XGI Volari XP5 card (if you look through the xorg.conf) but running the second X command still hangs up the system.
X runs fine under Knoppix, but most recent Ubuntu distros I've tried actually hung up after the initial text-based startup section, so presumably died as soon as X started up. Debian's graphical installer worked fine, however.

I have sound through the headphones but not through the laptop internal speakers. I've played with the alsamixer settings endlessly but no success, and I'm 99% sure that it's not an issue with the hardware or speaker wiring. I suspect I need to add an 'options snd-hda-intel model=xxxxx' line to alsa-base but not sure what argument to use.

Oct 31, 2010I've been using slackware64 13.1 ever since it came out on my Dell Inspiron 1525, and I haven't really had any problems with my webcam in that time. However, last time I tried to use skype - I noticed that it couldn't detect it.
In kinfocenter, my webcam is picked up (OmniVision Technologies). The only time I've had a similar problem in the past is when I used the "Compact" option in lilo.conf, and the webcam wouldn't turn on. Just removing the option solved the problem.
Since I don't know what steps caused this to happen, I'm not sure where to start fixing it

May 1, 2010I just bought a basic Dell Inspiron 570 Desktop, and installed Ubuntu 9.10, and found that the wired internet won't connect. I've checked the wire, and confirmed that an Ubuntu laptop can get a wired connection using it, but the new Inspiron doesn't do anything.
The "Network Connections" dialog shows a "Wired connection 1" item, but Network Manager refuses to connect to it. ifconfig only shows the lo interface.
How can I get this wired interface working? Please, this is very frustrating. I can only assume it's some sort of driver issue (which seems rare with the wired connection), but I can't even run an update since I don't have an internet connection.

Feb 23, 2010I've just had to reinstall WinXP on a Dell Inspiron 1501. An ideal opportunity to try out Ubuntu. First I tried a WinXP/Hardy Heron dual boot - all seems okay. Next WinXP/Karmic dual boot - all seems okay. Then, why not, WinXP/Hardy/Karmic triple boot - all seems okay. Playing with each OS I noticed that Hardy had a couple of update notifications. So I opened Update Manager, went on-line, hit [Check] and was informed that there were 200+ Important Security Updates - I installed these. Better check Karmic too - similar story, installed 200+ updates. Everything still seems okay in WinXP, Hardy and Karmic. However, I've just noticed that the Grub2 boot menu now displays eight "Ubuntu" lines, as opposed to the four lines I had originally

May 26, 2010I am a first time Linux user - though I've Unix and Windows experience. So though I can follow your most tech instructions, I'll need some hand-holding.
Need help getting my wireless network to work on my newly installed Oracle Linux on Dell laptop.
Not sure what wireless card is installed, or it's mac address (though I can boot into windows and get that info, I don't want to - it'll be kind of a let down if I can't fix it all thru Linux).
Install has detected a Broadcom wired card, but not the wireless. Funny thing is that it detected the Bluetooth.
