I was reading about Ruby code blocks, but it's all a bit hazy.My questions:1. Can you store executable code in the value part of a hash (err...associative array)2. If you did, how would you call the code?3. If you executed this stored code, would it be possible when doing soto pass in an object to the code that it could use?
I just used dd to clone a linux partition to a new hard drive, it had 800mb left on the old hard drive, after dd, new hard drive lists 1.29/1.3 terabytes full. Is this what happens by default in dd? How can I fix this?
I'm trying to figure out how to access the local part and the domain part of an email address in postfix's main.cf. For example, myname@mydomain.net has myname as the local part and mydomain.net as the domain part.I get the whole email address with %s. I want to speed up the lookups by writing better database queries.I've had no luck finding this in the otherwise well documented postfix.
we have access to one domain name , 1 internet ip address and may servers hosting different part of site. I want them all to be accessed via same web site . some of the server in our network are embedded devices.they have their specific utility being hosted on that machine. So the severs are bound to be distributed . I just wanted to know how can I access them via single ip, domain name.
In bootseqence of linux, the first step is check the CMOSRAM(size 64bytes) setup for custmor setting. So i am just confused wether CMOSRAM is a part of motherboard or is a part of RAM itself.
I did it in 8.04, my question is when I left (opposite) click the desktop CD/DVD icon and select Copy from the pop-up menu where does the extracted image end up.Its always worked well enough I never worried about it, but today I needed some copies of a DVD a coworker authored that had one of those lame "Stomper" labels stuck on. It was applied off center and made the disk so unbalanced it appeared to read at 1X or less I was expecting an option to save the image but didn't get one. Anyone know if its still on my hard drive somewhere so I can avoid the tedium of ripping it again?
Whenever i try to download something i do not know where they are saved to. for example, i just tried to download the skype beta for ubuntu. the firefox download prompt pops up with the only option being "save file". i click save file and then the prompt closes and nothing happens.
I'm setting up a single stand-alone computer in my classroom to be used by my students at the school where I teach. I've installed Ubuntu, as it smashes Windoze out of the court every time.
I want the students to be able to log on to the computer using just one account: 'Student'. This computer will be attached to a printer so they can type up and print oOfice documents, web pages, etc. However, once they log out, I want any files they might have saved (such as a word processed document) to be removed/deleted from the account so that when another pupil logs on to the 'Student' account they start with a clean slate. I suppose you could call it a sort-of Kiosk account.
How can I get Ubuntu to clear any saved documents on log-out?
For various reasons, I have reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 three times on my laptop. The 2nd time I reinstalled it, when I would connect to a wireless network, it would say connected but the network manager icon at the top panel said disconnected. What confused me is when I booted up during the 2nd install, it connected to my wireless without a problem. Is wireless info (saved networks, etc) saved in the home directory somewhere??
I didn't have the icon problem the first time, so I thought hmm, I have my stuff backed up, let's try it again except let's format everything this time. The third time I had no issues with the icon saying disconnected. My partitions are split with /root and /home. The first 2 times, I did not format home. The third time I did. Even though the first time I didn't have this issue, I couldn't understand why it popped up the 2nd time. Now that I formatted EVERYTHING, the issue isn't there.
AKA: 1st try - no issues - did not format home. 2nd try - icon says disconnected when connected - did not format home. 3rd try - no issues - formatted everything.
It's weird - every time I restart Ubuntu, my screen settings are at 1024x768@60Hz. When I change them to my preferred settings, this will completely destroy the order I like about my panel icons and it starts to suck. I use an Onboard Intel graphics card. Any advice on what to do?
When I go to user settings and try to add a new user, I get this error message: "This configuration could not be saved" You are not allowed to modify.. Even though i'm logged in as the admin. I'm running Ubuntu, the latest version. As of now, my account is labeled as "custom". I try to make it admin, yet it reverts back to custom.
I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 64, and when I change the CUPS-server via system->administration->printing->server->connect, the new list of network printers loads up correctly. But when I close the window and reopen it, the old CUPS-server is back, so it seems that the change isn't saved anywhere. Rebooting doesn't do anything.
I have a Xubuntu 10.10 (Merkat) installed on boot-able usb drive. This is working fine , however changes on e.g. timezone settings, accounts created in thunderbird are not stored on the USB stick?
I recently installed a base system from a 10.10 alternate cd and then selected a few packages to build myself a light install. I'm using lxdm as my login manager (desktop manager) and openbox as my window manager, with lxpanel and nm-applet autostarting after loading openbox. that's it so far.
My problem is that almost any changes I make as a user are not saved. ie I tried to make a wireless network available to all users with network manager but it immediately reverts. I tried to make changes to permissions through the gui 'users and groups' tool, (with i installed visa gnome-system-tools package in synaptic) but all changes are immediately forgotten. I also cannot mount another partition using pcmanfm. I get the response 'authentication is required.' These sound to me like permissions issues. what groups do I need to be a part of? update: I checked my groups and I wasnt a member of any so I googled around for whats normal and added myself. Im now a member of the groups:
Code:adm disk dialout cdrom sudo audio www-data video plugdev games users fuse lpadmin admin netdev But still nothing. changes are not remembered.
I have recently switched email pop3 client to Sylpheed. I need to import a large address book. When using the feature "Import comma delimited File", Sylpheed seems to carry out the operation and then crashes, closing. The new address file is not saved.
I see that this is a known bug in this version of Sylpheed, so I tried to install a later version. The latest version in the repository is 2.4.8-2, but versions exist upto 2.7.1.I tried to install this from the tar.gz file, but could find no effective instructions and no easy way to do this. Part of the problem seems to be that later Sylpheeds are written for versions of Ubuntu later than 8.04.So which way do I jump? Try to fix the 2.4.8 version? Or try to find a way to install 2.7.1?
I downloades some files with jdownloader, i choose a a folder on my windows partition, but the files where saved on /root/Desktop/V . i'm trying to cut them into other folder, but it fails. Now my free space on ubuntu is 0!
Right now I'm 2hrs ahead of my normal time zone, i.e. the time zone I chose when I installed. So I changed the system clock right , ie right click Time > Prefferences. But when I re-boot it keeps reverting to the original time.
My wife has put some pictures on her usb drive & trying to print them off at a few instant photo machines but they all say no pictures can be found? I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop, is there any way to make her usb drive recognisable to these machines and any other Windows system?
I know this has been covered before but I can't find a resolution to the issue. Kubuntu simply refuses to save the screen settings, and each time I reboot it returns to 1440 x 900. The correct resolution should be 1920 x 1080.
KRandr shows 1440x900 (auto) in its drop down Size field. I've set krandr to load on startup so that I can set the correct resolution but of course this means I have to set the panel size as well. I've only recently installed KUbuntu and it's great except for this issue. Surely there must be a simple fix? I'm not a noobie and have about 4 years experience on Ubuntu / openSuse etc.
I am running memtest due to memory issues, I am wondering if their is a log file that can be saved to the hhd with the memtest results, I am running memtest from the grub menu.I am running ubuntu 10.10
I am running a dedicated audio PC (Ubuntu 10.04 on Intel Atom 525) with a Juli@ sound card. I had everything set up and working great up until I accidentally pulled the sound card out of its slot while the computer was running. After that, the computer no longer recognized the Juli@ card.
I managed to fix the basic problem by following the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solution Guide- deleting and reinstalling ALSA is what did the trick. The only problem remaining is that the computer no longer remembers the output settings in the Sound Preferences dialog. The setting stays for as long as the computer is on, but as soon as I turn it off and reboot it, the sound output setting reverts back to the internal audio. I tried 'sudo alsactl store 1', but this does not work. Does anyone know how to fix this?
