My wife has put some pictures on her usb drive & trying to print them off at a few instant photo machines but they all say no pictures can be found? I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop, is there any way to make her usb drive recognisable to these machines and any other Windows system?

View 3 Replies View RelatedRunning Ubuntu 10.10 along side Windows7 on a 64-bit HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop. Everything works in Windows. Everything works in Ubuntu, except for 2 things.1) I can live with not being able to enable/disable wifi.) I cannot read photos from an SD card plugged into the laptops SD card reader. When I open the SD card in Ubuntu, I can see the file name, but the thumbnails show messed up pictures. Usually, the bottom half of the photo is solid green, and there are usually lines running through the photo, or it is divided into quadrants with one quadrant being ok, but the rest having the green and/or lines.I assume the driver for the card reader is not correct. Card reader works fine in Windows. So I have to reboot into windows, copy pictures from reader to a folder, then reboot into Ubuntu and I can see and open the photos just fine. Just cannot read and copy them from the card while in Ubuntu.

I have a few pictures on my local drives, but the bulk of my media resides on a samba share on the network. I want to use digiKam on my laptop to manage and edit these files, but I can't find a way to get digiKam to see the network folder, located here:

I have just had to reinstall my OS (Sabayon) onto a new and larger hard drive (dying old disk). I quickly saved all my old docs in /home on an external USB drive (formatted and then created an ext4 file system) before the swap and installation.
After getting the new disk running I connected the USB external disk. First I could not access the drive at all, but that seems to be fixed. Now I want to bring all my files back to my new /home folder but apparently they (especially the former MS Office .doc, .xls, etc files, not so much the OpenOffice files) are �read only� and I don't have permissions anymore. I am able to create directories on the external, and can move files back and forth, but don't seem to own many of them.Sabayon automatically mounted my external disk in /media/disk, rather than /mnt, so I've left that alone for now. After searching here and elsewhere for info, I tried a few things (below): For access I added a line to /etc/fstab:

I'm not sure what the �total 4� refers to since there is only the one directory �disk� inside /media but I assume that's not part of this issue... Does adding umask=0 have anything to do with this, and if so where does that go?
A few days ago I began to get messages about my hard drive running out of space, and while I tried to clear out some files to make room I somehow managed to mess something up such that my main login screen appeared with hugely distorted letters and dialog boxes, and it wouldn't let me log in. While this is still the case, I can now log in by booting to recovery mode, selecting the netroot option, doing an "su myusername", and then executing "startx".
While this is a little inconvenient, it does bring up my standard Ubuntu operating environment and I now have access to all my files, email, internet, etc. There are still a few miscellaneous things that are messed up, however, and I don't yet know how to fix themIn particular:a) I can't print. I tried running the printer configuration tool from the System->Administration menu, but there's no "New Printer" icon. Alsowhile trying to get it working, I managed to generate a "The cups scheduler is not running" error message.b) I can't mount a USB drive. Every time I plug one in, I get an error message that says "Unable to mount drive, not authorized."c) Finally, there's the basic problem of still not being able to login without going thru my recovery mode workaround.I suspect all these problems are related, though I'd be happy to fix them one at a time if that's what it takes.
Interesting problem: For the first time with Xubuntu 10.10 64bit, I am finding certain applications print corrupt. A varying amount of letters / numbers either get substituted/print a blank space/ print a box etc etc. This corruption seems to happen from a Pdf ( evince ) or Spreadheet ( Gnumeric ) Opening the same Pdf on another machine (ubuntu 10.10 32bit) prints perfectly. Opening the same .xls file on the original computer but using OOo Calc prints perfectly.
I guess I have ruled out any problems with the printer itself or the network JetDirect box. I have re-installed CUPS and evince and upgraded to the latest version of HPLIP but the problem appears unchanged.
I cannot print pdf files. I have tried using okular and xpdf. The documents display in the program, but print preview shows a blank page. The printer then sends out blank pages. I have tried printing on 2 different printers using usb cables. Using terminal to process the commands shows error:

My wife has a canon MP470 printer and running ubuntu 10.10. I am able to print black and white, but unable to print photos. I got it to work using another driver, but not the 'correct' one for this printer. I have searched a bit and don't see anything about ubuntu 10.10, just older versions. Or should I just network her to my printer....?

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 with a Laserjet 5M printer. When I attempt to print a job from Firefox or from Okular, the job never gets onto the print queue. However, I can print test pages on the printer and also print from OpenOffice, so this seems to be app-dependent. I know the jobs aren't being queued because the job number doesn't increase (as shown by the jobs for the test pages). Both Firefox and Ocular give every indication that the print job has been processed correctly.

The second page shows the first page on top of it, and the third shows the preceding pages on top of it - and so on. Has anyone else seen this problem?I guess the printer buffer is not getting flushed correctly. If my configurations were trashed in some way, I don't know where to look for a fix.

For example, using Firefox on Linux one can print a web page such that each sheet of paper has four pages printed upon it. I would like to combine several separate web pages so that for example, web-page-a, web-page-b and web-page-c (each less than one print page long) are printed on a single sheet of paper.
I would like to do this without having to use some form of image editor to combine and manage manually created temporary files.
Our one remaining problem seems to be printing. She has an HP OfficeJet 6500 USB printer. We have the computer conntected. Strangely, when I boot from the CD the printer shows up as installed even though I did nothing to install it. After having submitted a print job it shows the printer status as "idle" and the print queue is empty. I tried deleting that printer and re-installing. The installation went as one would expect. However the results are the same. I'm beginning to think that somehow the problem is related to the fact that we are operating from the live CD. getting this thing to print from the live CD.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI did it in 8.04, my question is when I left (opposite) click the desktop CD/DVD icon and select Copy from the pop-up menu where does the extracted image end up.Its always worked well enough I never worried about it, but today I needed some copies of a DVD a coworker authored that had one of those lame "Stomper" labels stuck on. It was applied off center and made the disk so unbalanced it appeared to read at 1X or less I was expecting an option to save the image but didn't get one. Anyone know if its still on my hard drive somewhere so I can avoid the tedium of ripping it again?

I'm setting up a single stand-alone computer in my classroom to be used by my students at the school where I teach. I've installed Ubuntu, as it smashes Windoze out of the court every time.
I want the students to be able to log on to the computer using just one account: 'Student'. This computer will be attached to a printer so they can type up and print oOfice documents,web pages, etc. However, once they log out, I want any files they might have saved (such as a word processed document) to be removed/deleted from the account so that when another pupil logs on to the 'Student' account they start with a clean slate. I suppose you could call it a sort-of Kiosk account.
How can I get Ubuntu to clear any saved documents on log-out?
For various reasons, I have reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 three times on my laptop. The 2nd time I reinstalled it, when I would connect to a wireless network, it would say connected but the network manager icon at the top panel said disconnected. What confused me is when I booted up during the 2nd install, it connected to my wireless without a problem. Is wireless info (saved networks, etc) saved in the home directory somewhere??
I didn't have the icon problem the first time, so I thought hmm, I have my stuff backed up, let's try it again except let's format everything this time. The third time I had no issues with the icon saying disconnected. My partitions are split with /root and /home. The first 2 times, I did not format home. The third time I did. Even though the first time I didn't have this issue, I couldn't understand why it popped up the 2nd time. Now that I formatted EVERYTHING, the issue isn't there.
AKA:
1st try - no issues - did not format home.
2nd try - icon says disconnected when connected - did not format home.
3rd try - no issues - formatted everything.

When I go to user settings and try to add a new user, I get this error message: "This configuration could not be saved" You are not allowed to modify.. Even though i'm logged in as the admin. I'm running Ubuntu, the latest version.As of now, my account is labeled as "custom". I try to make it admin, yet it reverts back to custom.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently installed a base system from a 10.10 alternate cd and then selected a few packages to build myself a light install. I'm using lxdm as my login manager (desktop manager) and openbox as my window manager, with lxpanel and nm-applet autostarting after loading openbox. that's it so far.
My problem is that almost any changes I make as a user are not saved. ie I tried to make a wireless network available to all users with network manager but it immediately reverts. I tried to make changes to permissions through the gui 'users and groups' tool, (with i installed visa gnome-system-tools package in synaptic) but all changes are immediately forgotten. I also cannot mount another partition using pcmanfm. I get the response 'authentication is required.' These sound to me like permissions issues. what groups do I need to be a part of? update: I checked my groups and I wasnt a member of any so I googled around for whats normal and added myself. Im now a member of the groups:

On several websites, such as WordPress and Facebook, when I go to upload pictures, in the window that pops up, all that I see is a big, empty box, even if pictures are in there. For example, let's say I navigate to my picture folder to choose a picture of my dog to upload. Neither the picture nor any of the other pictures in the folder will appear. Just a big, gray box, almost as if the folder were empty. Strangely, random pictures that I have downloaded from the web, such as one of Martin Luther that I have, show up. But even then, not all the pictures that I have downloaded!
This is perplexing to say the least!
Is this happening/has this happened to anyone before? Is it a bug in Ubuntu or have I neglected to download something important?
I plug my camera into my computer and a window pops that says a camera has been detected. There are two buttons, "Ignore" and "Import Photos". I click on "Import Photos" and nothing happens. I'm wondering if I can just navigate to a folder where I might find the pictures, kinda like /media/cdrom/ to get to a cd.
