Ubuntu :: Changes Made As User Are Not Saved?

Mar 27, 2011

I recently installed a base system from a 10.10 alternate cd and then selected a few packages to build myself a light install. I'm using lxdm as my login manager (desktop manager) and openbox as my window manager, with lxpanel and nm-applet autostarting after loading openbox. that's it so far.

My problem is that almost any changes I make as a user are not saved. ie I tried to make a wireless network available to all users with network manager but it immediately reverts. I tried to make changes to permissions through the gui 'users and groups' tool, (with i installed visa gnome-system-tools package in synaptic) but all changes are immediately forgotten. I also cannot mount another partition using pcmanfm. I get the response 'authentication is required.' These sound to me like permissions issues. what groups do I need to be a part of? update: I checked my groups and I wasnt a member of any so I googled around for whats normal and added myself. Im now a member of the groups:

Code:adm disk dialout cdrom sudo audio www-data video plugdev games users fuse lpadmin admin netdev But still nothing. changes are not remembered.

Ubuntu :: Made An Error With Chmod - Create User But Don't Allow To See The Other User's Home Folder

Jan 18, 2010

I wanted to create an user but don't allow it to see the other user's home folder so I made chmod 0750 /home/folder and it worked fine so I went ahead and decided to completely forbid access to the root folder and I had the "great" idea to make chmod 0750 /, and now I'm having problems with wine and other applications, in example I used to have a folder in this address 209.239.114.51/mmgr but now it's giving me errors and if I try to run some applications I got error "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal"

OpenSUSE Network :: User's Home Directory Saved In Samba Server Not Locally

Mar 27, 2011

Continuing with my assigned task of migrating the company's PCs to GNU/Linux (openSUSE as server for GNU/Linux clients) I managed to set up a DC with roaming profiles for the few remaining Windows users, user validation and login for the openSUSE boxes and a few network shares with different rights. I know there are no roaming profiles for GNU/Linux and I can live with that but I would like to specify wich users/groups would have their home directories saved locally (notebook users) and which will save them on the Samba server.

By default home directories are saved locally but somehow Samba creates a minimal home directory for each user under /home in the Samba server. How can I tell the client box to use that directory? and how can I set up the few notebook users to save it on their disks? Maybe using the options under Yast > Security... > Users and groups management > Users (LDAP Users filter) > and then select the user and use the "Manage Samba account parameters" plug-in for specifying the different paths cant achieve this.

Ubuntu :: Where Is Cd/dvd Copy Image Saved

Jan 6, 2010

I did it in 8.04, my question is when I left (opposite) click the desktop CD/DVD icon and select Copy from the pop-up menu where does the extracted image end up.Its always worked well enough I never worried about it, but today I needed some copies of a DVD a coworker authored that had one of those lame "Stomper" labels stuck on. It was applied off center and made the disk so unbalanced it appeared to read at 1X or less I was expecting an option to save the image but didn't get one. Anyone know if its still on my hard drive somewhere so I can avoid the tedium of ripping it again?

Ubuntu :: How To Delete Saved Files On Log Out

Apr 11, 2010

I'm setting up a single stand-alone computer in my classroom to be used by my students at the school where I teach. I've installed Ubuntu, as it smashes Windoze out of the court every time.

I want the students to be able to log on to the computer using just one account: 'Student'. This computer will be attached to a printer so they can type up and print oOfice documents, web pages, etc. However, once they log out, I want any files they might have saved (such as a word processed document) to be removed/deleted from the account so that when another pupil logs on to the 'Student' account they start with a clean slate. I suppose you could call it a sort-of Kiosk account.

How can I get Ubuntu to clear any saved documents on log-out?

Ubuntu :: Where Are Wireless Settings Saved?

May 21, 2010

For various reasons, I have reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 three times on my laptop. The 2nd time I reinstalled it, when I would connect to a wireless network, it would say connected but the network manager icon at the top panel said disconnected. What confused me is when I booted up during the 2nd install, it connected to my wireless without a problem. Is wireless info (saved networks, etc) saved in the home directory somewhere??

I didn't have the icon problem the first time, so I thought hmm, I have my stuff backed up, let's try it again except let's format everything this time. The third time I had no issues with the icon saying disconnected. My partitions are split with /root and /home. The first 2 times, I did not format home. The third time I did. Even though the first time I didn't have this issue, I couldn't understand why it popped up the 2nd time. Now that I formatted EVERYTHING, the issue isn't there.

AKA:
1st try - no issues - did not format home.
2nd try - icon says disconnected when connected - did not format home.
3rd try - no issues - formatted everything.

Ubuntu Installation :: New Address File Is Not Saved

Feb 15, 2010

I have recently switched email pop3 client to Sylpheed. I need to import a large address book. When using the feature "Import comma delimited File", Sylpheed seems to carry out the operation and then crashes, closing. The new address file is not saved.

I see that this is a known bug in this version of Sylpheed, so I tried to install a later version. The latest version in the repository is 2.4.8-2, but versions exist upto 2.7.1.I tried to install this from the tar.gz file, but could find no effective instructions and no easy way to do this. Part of the problem seems to be that later Sylpheeds are written for versions of Ubuntu later than 8.04.So which way do I jump? Try to fix the 2.4.8 version? Or try to find a way to install 2.7.1?

Ubuntu :: Screen Settings Not Saved After Reboot?

Feb 11, 2011

I know this has been covered before but I can't find a resolution to the issue. Kubuntu simply refuses to save the screen settings, and each time I reboot it returns to 1440 x 900. The correct resolution should be 1920 x 1080.

KRandr shows 1440x900 (auto) in its drop down Size field. I've set krandr to load on startup so that I can set the correct resolution but of course this means I have to set the panel size as well. I've only recently installed KUbuntu and it's great except for this issue. Surely there must be a simple fix? I'm not a noobie and have about 4 years experience on Ubuntu / openSuse etc.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Settings Are Not Saved?

May 7, 2011

I am running a dedicated audio PC (Ubuntu 10.04 on Intel Atom 525) with a Juli@ sound card. I had everything set up and working great up until I accidentally pulled the sound card out of its slot while the computer was running. After that, the computer no longer recognized the Juli@ card.

I managed to fix the basic problem by following the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solution Guide- deleting and reinstalling ALSA is what did the trick. The only problem remaining is that the computer no longer remembers the output settings in the Sound Preferences dialog. The setting stays for as long as the computer is on, but as soon as I turn it off and reboot it, the sound output setting reverts back to the internal audio. I tried 'sudo alsactl store 1', but this does not work. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Ubuntu :: Shared File Changes Ownership When Saved?

Aug 1, 2011

I've created a share using Nautilus on an Ubuntu 11.04 machine and can access it OK from both my Win 7 pc and partner's WinXP machine. We both have Ubuntu accounts and use those to access the share. When an Excel spreadsheet is saved on the WinXP machine the ownership changes and it can then only be opened read-only on the Win7 machine. A further complication could be that the Win7 machine has OpenOffice and the WinXP has MS Office. I'm guessing that XP + Office doesn't really care about or see the permissions, but Win7 + OpenOffice does. Should I be using the share with the same username from both PCs? Is my whole approach misguided?

Ubuntu :: Can't Open Any Programs Made In C++?

Jan 30, 2010

When i was in Windows, i had absolutely no problem creating and running basic terminal C++ programs. I came to Ubuntu, and now I've got a big problem: I can't run any program that i make. I have tried making programs in Code::Blocks, CodeLight, MonoDevelop, and NetBeans. All 4 four are free IDE's from the ubuntu installer. I've created 4 programs, 1 on each, and they're all the EXACT same program. When i build it, they build just fine and run. When i release and compile it so it becomes an .exe program, i can't open it. I find the thing, double click, and nothing happens. I rightclick and choose Run, and nothing happens. I made a basic Hello World program, and i couldn't even run that. Is there an extra thing im supposed to install to allow me to run .exe or something?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: DVD .iso Made In K3b Plays On TV But Not XP?

Mar 12, 2010

I have a home movie that is currently in Video_TS format (.bup/.vob files). I burned the movie using K3b and it works awesome in both Ubuntu and on my DVD player with the television. BUT the thing will not play in XP! I understand this is because XP is the work of the devil, but that is not important. The disc shows 4Gb used (in XP) but only gives the title. I even made sure hidden files were visible, just in case somehow the movie was invisible. I have tried burning my DVD directly from the video_ts files in K3b, and first making an .iso file, then going over to XP to burn the DVD using Nero...annnnnd same thing. I can watch them on the TV and 'buntu but not XP.

What have I done wrong? Advice? Need more info? invariably someone wants to ask the irrelevant question "Why do you need to watch it in Windows?"
