Security :: Samba Changes File Ownership When File Is Saved

Apr 8, 2010

I have a Samba share set up on a SUSE server and users connect to the share via Windows XP workstations. On SUSE, if I create a file and grant ownership to "administrator" and give it 770 permissions for example, when someone goes in to modify that file, they become the owner as soon as they save it, and the permissions change to 470 (r--rwx---+) with an access control list. I want to maintain ownership of the file myself and I don't understand why someone changing the file is changing the permissions on it...This is driving me insane because every time someone saves something I have to go in and chmod 770 it before they can save it again.

Ubuntu Installation :: New Address File Is Not Saved

Feb 15, 2010

I have recently switched email pop3 client to Sylpheed. I need to import a large address book. When using the feature "Import comma delimited File", Sylpheed seems to carry out the operation and then crashes, closing. The new address file is not saved.

I see that this is a known bug in this version of Sylpheed, so I tried to install a later version. The latest version in the repository is 2.4.8-2, but versions exist upto 2.7.1.I tried to install this from the tar.gz file, but could find no effective instructions and no easy way to do this. Part of the problem seems to be that later Sylpheeds are written for versions of Ubuntu later than 8.04.So which way do I jump? Try to fix the 2.4.8 version? Or try to find a way to install 2.7.1?

Ubuntu :: Shared File Changes Ownership When Saved?

Aug 1, 2011

I've created a share using Nautilus on an Ubuntu 11.04 machine and can access it OK from both my Win 7 pc and partner's WinXP machine. We both have Ubuntu accounts and use those to access the share. When an Excel spreadsheet is saved on the WinXP machine the ownership changes and it can then only be opened read-only on the Win7 machine. A further complication could be that the Win7 machine has OpenOffice and the WinXP has MS Office. I'm guessing that XP + Office doesn't really care about or see the permissions, but Win7 + OpenOffice does. Should I be using the share with the same username from both PCs? Is my whole approach misguided?

Ubuntu :: Open Windows Folder Saved As .tar File?

Feb 15, 2011

Via empathy a friend sent me a windows folder containing jpg files. I suppose he just drag and dropped the folder into the messenger window in Win7 and sent it to me that way. I accepted and saved on the desktop. Empathy turned the folder into a .tar file. When I try to open the tar file I get the following error:

tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

Not surprising as it is indeed not a real tar archive. When I check to see which filetype it is with the file command it says -data. I've tried multiple versions of mount commands with various filetypes but I just can't seem to open this thing. How can I open this folder saved as .tar?

Ubuntu :: Nvidia Beta Driver: Resolution Cannot Be Saved In Xorg File

Jan 31, 2011

I am using 10.10 64bit with a Nvidia GeForce Graphic Card on my Acer 5741G 434 Notebook.

I have always used Compiz and without it I can barely use my Notebook. Apparently I had to install the Nvidia accelerated 3d Drivers (current version) in order to use Compiz.

However I cannot enable the "normal" visual effects (right click on desktop / change bakcground/ visual effects) that are necessary for using compiz.

Also everytime I reboot my resolution goes back to 800x600 although I saved the resolution to 1366. So everytime I start my Notebook I have to go to the Nvidia X server settings and set the resolution to 1366.

What I tried until now:

- I tried to reinstall Ubuntu twice!

- I tried to unistall all nvidia Drivers and install through the terminal using the command "sh" the nvidia drivers i downloaded from their website

- I tried to use the nouveau open source driver

Additional Information:

- when I boot a logo of the nvidia BETA driver appears

- for the past couple days I even experienced another problem: the windows do not have the minimize/close and maximize buttons

I am even willing to install the System again!

I had nothing but problems with the latest 10.10 ubuntu distribiution.

Software :: Alternative To Audacity Decided Not To Be Able To Open The File It Saved 5 Hours Ago?

Feb 22, 2011

I have used audacity occasionally since... well, since ever. I grew annoyed by a very uncommon way to do the things, and for the occasional bug of the day (varying the bug depending on the concrete day, that is).

After I awoke in the morning to continue the editing, it seems that audacity decided not to be able to open the file it saved 5 hours ago (not much time to sleep, you see). I am looking for a piece of software that can do basic wave editing. I really don't need jack, ardour, rosegarden nor anything like that. I only do wave editing, and as said very occasionally.

So, is there any other wave editor that I can use instead of audacity? I don't even need it to be able to open the audacity .aup files. I will re-do the work if needed.

Ubuntu :: Rsync Copy Results In Incomplete File

May 26, 2011

Using Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS. I'm new to Ubuntu and testing Rsync. I successfully copied 3TB of data from a Win7 machine to an MDADM Raid5 array. All appears to be fine. Used a Win app for the copy. I then deleted a 250GB folder on the Raid5 array and recopied the data using Rsync. Rsync was executed via a Putty session on a WinXP machine. The source was an eSata attached drive (same drive used for the big 3TB copy) and the destination was the same Raid5 array. That copied just fine. I bit verified it with a Win7 app. Perfect.

I then used the following Rsync script to copy a single 26GB file from that same eSata drive back to (what I intended to be) the Raid5 array:
Code:
neil@ANTECUBSV:/mnt$ rsync -r -a -v -e ssh --delete /mnt/disk1/Test/ /mnt/Test
sending incremental file list
created directory /mnt/Test
./ C_VOL-S300-b001.spf
sent 3020267622 bytes received 34 bytes 50760800.94 bytes/sec
total size is 3019898880 speedup is 1.00
neil@ANTECUBSV:/mnt$ cd raid

Note that only about 3GB copied. No error messages were posted to the putty session. I made a mistake in the Rsync command, creating the Test folder directly in the mount folder rather than the Raid array, as I intended. That is a little strange, yes, but I would not think it would cause a partial copy? The /mnt folder is on my system drive, which had about 34GB available space before the copy, so comfortably would have had 6GB or so after.
The eSata disk is mounted as /mnt/disk1
The Raid5 array is mounted as /mnt/raid

I then recopied the file to the correct intended destination on the Raid5 array, which has about 400GB free space (plenty).
Code:
neil@ANTECUBSV:/mnt/raid$ rsync -r -a -v -e ssh --delete /mnt/disk1/Test/ /mnt/raid/Test
sending incremental file list
./
deleting 2010-07-05 Backyard Birds/Thumbs.db
deleting 2010-07-05 Backyard Birds/
C_VOL-S300-b001.spf
sent 11105775462 bytes received 34 bytes 50366328.78 bytes/sec
total size is 11104419840 speedup is 1.00
neil@ANTECUBSV:/mnt/raid$ df -h

Note that only about 11GB was copied, and this was confirmed with an ls -l command. Now I am correctly copying the file to the Raid array but it is still incomplete. I then copied the file back to the /mnt folder to see if the problem reproduces:
Code:
neil@ANTECUBSV:/mnt/raid$ rsync -r -a -v -e ssh --delete /mnt/disk1/Test/ /mnt/Test
sending incremental file list
created directory /mnt/Test
./
C_VOL-S300-b001.spf
sent 26327927554 bytes received 34 bytes 56558383.65 bytes/sec
total size is 26324713984 speedup is 1.00
neil@ANTECUBSV:/mnt/raid$ cd /mnt/test

This time I got my full 26GB file. Why I might be getting inconsistent results? This is quite troubling of course. I'd also be interested in basic a command line Linux diff app (that does file directory as well as bit level checking) if one is available.

Debian :: Sudo Results In Strange File Owner

Mar 16, 2010

I like the "Ubuntu" sudo philosophy and wanted to setup this sudo the same way on my Debian system. I was happy when I found that I just have to do the following:
-create a group 'admin'
-adduser christian admin
-visudo
-add the line: %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL

Then I tried sudo rm -rf / to check if sudo works. All worked fine. No, seriously, I can move around files that belong to the root and such, so sudo somehow works. But when creating new files with sudo, like e.g.
tar xzf myZippedTarball
these files belong to user 41034 and to the group users instead of root root:
drwxr-xr-x 7 41034 users 4096 2009-11-01 01:07 libsvm-2.9
Certainly, this is not the way I want to have. The user 41034 doesn't even show up in /etc/passwd...

Ubuntu :: Grub Finds No Kernels / Only Memtest

Jul 31, 2011

I ran grub-customiser to set default kernel, and saw the GFX mode setting, thinking "Hey, my monitor is native at 1440x900! I'll use that!" ...Didn't think about how the GFX card isn't initialized at that point, so my res is limited to 640x480... So the first problem was a system hang at the grub menu, with "Input Not Supported" displayed on the monitor.I changed the GFX mode back, and ran update-grub, and with a grin on my face, I rebooted. The grin went away fast, when I saw that none of the kernels showed in the grub menu, and I have only the two memtest entries. It appears that, while all the files are still intact, grub is not seeing the kernels. I had an idle partition of about 13 GB on hand, so after trying all sorts of things, I did a clean install on the little 13 GB partition. Still no dice, after doing an apt-get purge grub etc etc etc on my main Ubuntu partition, to make sure that the new grub was running. I still have only memtest, even though I can open the /boot directory and see the kernel files. I tried going into the grub command line and starting manually, but tab-complete does not suggest any of the kernel files, and tells me that the files do not exist, if I type in their full names.
