Whenever i try to download something i do not know where they are saved to. for example, i just tried to download the skype beta for ubuntu. the firefox download prompt pops up with the only option being "save file". i click save file and then the prompt closes and nothing happens.
if you go to Edit > prefs > security and choose to show saved passwords they are displayed without entering root pw. This seems to be a huge security hole. How do we fix this?
I installed the Penta OS version of Ubuntu and the version of Firefox that came with it would not retain my bookmarks on restarting Firefox. My solution was to 'apt-get uninstall Firefox.Penta OS would not let me install the latest version of Firefox with an incompatability notice. So I installed one using the Package Manager called Firefox 2
Since Ubuntu become 10.04, Firefox got some big issues with losing it's memory of saved users/passwords and places I've visited earlier. To fix it, I need to close and re-open Firefox and all is fine for a time. But after some time, all stuffs is gone missing again and I need to close and re-open it...
Why isn't Windows users affected with this? Only Ubuntu folks?
I'm setting up a single stand-alone computer in my classroom to be used by my students at the school where I teach. I've installed Ubuntu, as it smashes Windoze out of the court every time.
I want the students to be able to log on to the computer using just one account: 'Student'. This computer will be attached to a printer so they can type up and print oOfice documents, web pages, etc. However, once they log out, I want any files they might have saved (such as a word processed document) to be removed/deleted from the account so that when another pupil logs on to the 'Student' account they start with a clean slate. I suppose you could call it a sort-of Kiosk account.
How can I get Ubuntu to clear any saved documents on log-out?
I downloades some files with jdownloader, i choose a a folder on my windows partition, but the files where saved on /root/Desktop/V . i'm trying to cut them into other folder, but it fails. Now my free space on ubuntu is 0!
I've had a problem for a while-- when I save files on a USB stick in Ubuntu, then put it in a windows computer, it doesn't recognize the files. It only recognizes a video file that I have, but not the .doc files. The folders either don't appear or only appear as shortcuts.
I'm saving files onto my NTFS partition from Ubuntu (Karmic, dual boot with Vista Home), but, although the files appear to be there, they cannot be read. The error message is 'File not Found. Check the name and try again'. File appears under Windows Explorer and has a file size of 986K.
I have downloaded the rpm file "rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm" from internet and tried to install this(VLC) on fedora 10 by running following commands:-
rpm -ivh rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm
Then it showed me finishing installation. But I am not able to find out where it is installed? I am not able to use this software. From where I an get these details .... it is not showing me under the Applications----> Multimedia.
I have downloaded some files and saved them in one of my partition. But when i boot back from windows 7 those files were not visible. So i went back to fedora and found that the files are no longer there then i tested by saving some other files in the partitions and when checked through windows 7 those files are gone. they are not available anymore....i searched everywhere through both OS but couldnt find it.
I just downloaded a file that ends with .Repo, I believe it's a repository file. How should I install this type of file and where/which directory it should be extracted or saved to?
My apology for being a suzee nubbee (Windoz refugee).
I have just had to reinstall my OS (Sabayon) onto a new and larger hard drive (dying old disk). I quickly saved all my old docs in /home on an external USB drive (formatted and then created an ext4 file system) before the swap and installation.
After getting the new disk running I connected the USB external disk. First I could not access the drive at all, but that seems to be fixed. Now I want to bring all my files back to my new /home folder but apparently they (especially the former MS Office .doc, .xls, etc files, not so much the OpenOffice files) are read only and I don't have permissions anymore. I am able to create directories on the external, and can move files back and forth, but don't seem to own many of them.Sabayon automatically mounted my external disk in /media/disk, rather than /mnt, so I've left that alone for now. After searching here and elsewhere for info, I tried a few things (below): For access I added a line to /etc/fstab:
Code:
/dev/sdb1 /media/disk ext4 noauto,rw 0 0
Here's what I've done to try and fix ownership already:
in /media I:
Code:
# chmod 775 disk
which gives output of:
Code:
media # ls -l total 4 drwxrwxr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 1 21:30 disk
[code]....
I'm not sure what the total 4 refers to since there is only the one directory disk inside /media but I assume that's not part of this issue... Does adding umask=0 have anything to do with this, and if so where does that go?
Is there a way to update my distro with a newer version and not disturb saved media files? Music and pictures etc. Can I move them to another partition. Its there a better way than to save it to disk?
im running beta 2 of 10.04 x64 and ive noticed a problem where for some reason whenever I download a file it always gets corrupt even though its a 100% complete.
Ive tried using wget instead to download the file and that worked fine
ive removed ubufox package and its now working fine
Is anyone else having this problem?
I wanna be 100% sure that its not my fault and is really a bug before I submit it
I've been getting annoyed with the way that Firefox opens files for me. I used to have it so that they would come up with a window that asked whether I wished to save files onto the hard drive or simply open them. When choosing to Save, they would go to my Desktop. Because I mainly save files from my Uni website, they are generally .pdf files. N for some reason, they open in the Firefox window, so then I have to go to File, Save, then choose where I want to save it. It would be more efficient if it worked the way it did originally. How can I get the settings back to the way they were? I am running Ubuntu 9.04 and Firefox 3.0.19. Because I use a shared computer, I'm not sure whether the version of Firefox has been changed.
I'm running Firefox within YLMF 3.0 (a distro of Linux with Ubuntu 10.04).
When I go into "Help,About", it says ... version 3.6.3 Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical - 1.0
While I'm in Firefox, when I try to open a local file (a "local file" meaning an HTM or image file stored on my computer as opposed to remotely through the internet) by going into the File menu and selectng Open (or by doing "Ctrl/O" from the keyboard), I get a dialog box prompting me to navigate to the file. When I navigate to the file and click on Open, the dialog box vanishes and nothing more happens. (The webpage that was already displayed is still there).
However, if I type the URL representing the local file into the address bar (for example, if I have a file called "homepage.htm" and it resides on the path "/home/user/html/", and I type "file:///home/user/html/homepage.htm"), it works and the file gets opened and displayed.
Also, if I'm not already in Firefox but instead go into the File Manager and navigate to the filename, then right-click on the filename, then choose "Open with", then choose "Firefox", Firefox will then be invoked with that file loaded in it.
But why can't I open the file the normal way from within Firefox by using "File,Open" (or "Ctrl/O" from the keyboard)?
I downloaded Nagios Checker and i was told in this web [url] that i have to add the add-ons for Nagios Checker. But when i opened the firefox browser, i went to Tools > Add-Ons.. under the Add-Ons i did not see the Nagios Checker, by right it should appear..how come?
I can't save files with the .hqx extension for some reason. Firefox was recently upgraded to 3.5.7 via Update Manager. Nothing happens when I click on a link pointing to a .hqx file no download status window. I can see that something is trying to download but it is not saved to disk. (Yes, I checked /dev/null first). My first stop was to edit > preferences > applications to see if the extension definitions got borked during the upgrade. Everything seemed normal except for the fact that I couldn't see an entry for .hqx files and no apparent method for manually adding it to the list. I went to another site that I administer and successfully download a .pdf file
Depending on whether I launched it with gnome do or the main menu I got a different 'version' of spotify, I could tell this because it had different searches remembered. I tried removing wine and spotify and gnome do via synaptic and completely remove and then the option to remove configuration files left over. I did a search and there were loads of wine files left so I just deleted. When I reinstalled wine, spotify and gnome do the same problem occurred.
Also Firefox started crashing ubuntu, just freezing it, so I tried to uninstall completely, but when I restarted it kept the same add ons and still crashed. So I uninstalled again and tried to delete all firefox folders but I can't work out how to do it as root.
Firefox grays out and doesn't unfreeze until the entire upload is complete.I can't do anything else on the internet while this is happening. This didn't bother me until now, because I need to upload some pretty high quality pictures to Flickr, and it takes about fifteen or twenty minutes to do so.I'd like if the pictures could simply upload in the background while I do other stuff, instead of completely freezing my internet usage in the process.I don't have a problem downloading files quietly in the background not even large files so why can't I upload files without freezing everything up? Is this normal, or is there a fix for this?
I basically want to transfer firefox settings from one machine to another (or from one user to another) which includes some extensions. Instead of running the browser and installing the extension manually, I just want to copy and paste the relevant files.
I noticed that the folder name where the 'extensions' folder is present is different for different users. And just copying to that folder does not work. code...
I'm guessing there are other configuration files that I need to modify. Can someone tell me right way to go about this?
I install a nautilus plug-in which in turn installed the elinks browser and now all of my .html files are opening in elinks instead of firefox so how do I get .htm/.html and other web type files to open in firefox instead of elinks.
I also tried removing elinks from my system but then the files just open in gedit so again how do I associate .html (and other web files) with firefox.
BTW firefox is already set as my default browser in System > Prefs > Prefered Applications > Web Browser
I was hoping someone could help me, I am trying to upload files to ovi share(without using firefox), at the minute i have to right click the file then click send to then email, [URL].. click send, then it opens evolution and I have to click again to send. Does anyone know how I should be going about this? How do I make this simpler?
I'm just having a small issue with Firefox 6 (Ubuntu 11.04, 32 bit).Whenever I save a file and try to open it by double clicking in theDownloads Windows, Firefox attempts to open it with Nautilus.I can't understand why, but now every time I'm forced to openthe containing folder and launch the file manually. It's not a big issue but I'd like to solve it
I am trying to work my way with LAMP, so I have installed Apache, Php and MySql and also PhpMyAdmin. The problem I have noticed is that firefox cannot handle .php files. Instead it treats them like unkwon type and ask instructions for handling them (save, open with..). They are not prosessed by the server so no content is displayed. I have tried the followings:
1.Added the line AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3 .phtml in my /etc/apache2/apache2.conf file
2.Added the line AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3 .phtml in my /etc/apache2/httpd.conf file (it was empty before)
3.Checked if php module is enabled by a2enmod php (it was)
4.Installed epiphany to see if it was a server problem (it handles simple php files fine -so it is a problem of firefox-)
5.Checked the existense of /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php5.conf and /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php5.load files (there were present)
6.Cleared my cache of firefox! (as I have read in a thread)
7.Also created new profile in firefox (also read in a thread) but pointless also!
